Soft materials, sometimes known as complex fluids, include polymers, colloids, amphiphiles, surfactants and liquid crystals. These apparently diverse materials have common structural and dynamic properties that fall between those of crystalline solids and simple molecular liquids and gases. Soft and flexible materials are the result of the complexity and intricacy of molecular self-assemly. The versatility of this ordering has been exploited by manufacturing industry to make paints, plastics, detergents and many other everyday products. In the natural world, self-assembly drives the ordering of proteins and nucleic acids. The principles by which mankind and nature harness supra-molecular ordering in soft matter are outlined in this book. This book contains a concised overview on soft matter physics or what chemists use to call colloid chemistry. As stated by the author in the Preface, it has been written primarily for undergraduate students. However, it should be also useful to researchers that are looking for a unified view of the subject. The book is organized in five chapters: 1) Introduction, 2) Polymers, 3) Colloids, 4) Amphiphiles, and 5) Liquid crystals. Each chapter includes both FURTHER READING and QUESTIONS sections (numerical solutions to the questions are provided at the end of the book). All in all this quasi-pocket book appear to have reached its scope, I think, and hence I rated it with five stars. Readers that want to dig deeper into this subject may consult the book Soft Matter Physics: an Introduction, by Kleman and Lavrentovich (648 pp). Those wishing to take an intermediate step, may consult the recently published book Soft Condensed Matter by Jones (230 pp).

Herman outlines the precise strategies used by top performers from the world of sports, politics, entertainment and more to become even more powerful on and off the field of play than they are innately.It's counter-intuitive and makes perfect sense. His historical examples of well-known achievers using the Alter Ego Effect are ample proof - if proof is needed - that this process for improved performance works and has done for millenia.While so many self-help books blindly suggest that you should step into an improved version of "you" (or more dangerously, that you are enough), Herman's book is the first one I've read to explain WHY a new version of you is going to be far more useful in life and specifically HOW to put that alter ego to play.Read this book.
In an incredibly relatable journey that guides you through the process to show up in every opportunity or situation in your life, (in ways what you know you are capable but struggle to overcome self doubt, family stories, or past trauma), this book is about to change the "field of play" for me in many ways.I’d heard about Alter Ego’s before from Todd Herman, and even put them into practice in my business, but Todd’s stories, examples and framework in the book for putting into practice these secret identities has shifted my view of how I can use DIFFERENT Alter Ego’s in the areas I struggle most.Interestingly, it’s not only “work†that I am challenged to show up how I need to, it’s at home, too.I’m on chapter 11 of the audio book right now, and can tell you, this book is a game changer for me as a mom, a wife and a leader.I'll be gifting this book to every member of my team, as well as friends and clients alike, because who can't use a little motivation to bring out the hero inside? So Good.
The main idea of this book is to get the reader to imagine themselves as a different character to get the results they want. It is written a bit too fluffy for my tastes (here's a story about Bob, Bob made this work, etc. like many self help books) but some may find the examples more useful, I skimmed most of them. That being said, I did find the techniques useful and an actively using them. What I find interesting though is that humans seem to have an innate capability to do this, perhaps schizophrenia is when this innate ability is in the far end of the spectrum, but normally it is useful and serves an evolutionary advantage!
The power of the Alter Ego Effect is brilliantly captured in this book. Todd Herman talks through how to use the power of your creative imagination so you can, within minutes, start to shape a narrative about you that serves you.As an athlete I've unknowningly used Alter Egos for years to perform on the hockey field. But by consciously going through Todd's Alter Ego process I've been able to launch a successful podcast, start a coaching practice and push myself outside my comfort zone. This has helped me achieve goals that I had forever though were just "good ideas".I'd highly encourage you to read this book and use Todd's principles to pull out the YOU whose capable of greatness.. whatever your Field of Play.
Full disclosure: I not only got an early copy, I helped Todd edit the book and even pushed him to actually finish it (like all first time authors, he was anxiopus about it).I don't have much to add to the book in terms of telling you whats in it, the other reviews cover that well. I just want to tell you that this is the first book of its type that has a truly original idea I've read in a LONG LONG time.Don't get me wrong--Todd did not invent the idea of alter egos, obviously. From Clark Kent back to the Muses, the ideas in the book are universal and timeless.But that's what makes this book so good, is that Todd is the first to really identify and explain them. Its like he's the guy teaching fish that they live in water.This book will, at a minimum, be a great read for you. But what most people will get from it will be a life-changing shift of perspective that creates some incredible breakthroughs (it did for me).

Your Alter Ego isn't a fraud. It's YOU helping YOU perform at your best. It's you getting out of your own way. I know that one reason I resonate so strongly with Todd's take about alter egos is how much it correlates to my own views about our intuition, and why for too many, we lose touch with the importance our intuition plays in our hearts and minds, as well as our confidence and ability to not only believe we can do great things, but actually accomplish great things.
When I first heard about the concept of alter egos, I was intrigued. But I wondered if this would really apply to me, so I decided to read the book and find out. I'm impressed and highly recommend this book.First, the author Todd Herman is an expert in this space and has been coaching top performers for decades. Second, he explains the concepts in an engaging and relatable way with many examples of people who have used this—people you may be surprised about.You may already be using an alter ego. I realized I was (trying to), but Herman gave me the tools to really amp it up and use it in a way that’s consistent.Also, great takeaways from this book were the 5 bridges to progress and moments of impact. Since reading this book, I’ve started thinking about my career and relationships in those terms and already see a huge difference. 

I love the way this book contains actionable steps for you to apply the alter ego approach in your life. There are so many areas of my life—fields of play— where I can use this.
