It serves the need of a newspaper to keep writing concise and that makes some of the rules seem self-serving, but it is an invaluable aid to promote clarity and precision of language. This Style book, along with "The Chicago Manual of Style", are essential reference material for any writer and are my favorite gifts for graduates from both high school and college.
To put it simply, you probably already know whether or not you work in a field where this might come in handy. I'm an editor at a university, and while this book was not an essential part of my editor's toolkit, it comes in handy for settling textual formatting disputes, and insuring consistency.The book itself is well designed, it has a sensible layout and offers a pretty substantial amount of information in a manner that is intuitive and easy to understand.Generally speaking, if you have a question, the book has anticipated it, and has an answer for you. I have been disappointed on occasion to find things missing from it, but generally it has been able to answer about 90% of my questions.
I can still hear my writing professor's admonishment, "Get a damn stylebook!"The AP Stylebook is the industry standard for journalistic writing. I use mine all the time (even for things like writing Amazon reviews!). If you want your writing to be professional and tight, pick up a stylebook and keep it by your desk or in your bag. The AP book is solid and refined. Usually, I can find answers to my question in the first or second place I look.

For those of us in the industry, it's important to purchase the most current stylebook available, especially due to continuous growth in social media and online journalism. I've used AP Style Manuals since the early 1990s. This edition upholds AP's usual high standards. Last time I got one with a perfect binding and learned my lesson. If you are going to be using the manual for regular reference, you need the spiral binding. The perfect binding won't lie flat even if you crack the spine.

Like another reviewer posted, this book was enormously disappointing. It actually seems like something published decades ago using low-quality, prepared ingredients with recipes calling for Velveeta/processed cheese, Campbell's-style Cream of XXX soup (in at least one recipe multiple cans of different prepared soups). There were only a few items that I could even imagine making--and the rest seemed very unhealthy and certainly not contemporary recipes that would "Up the Yum Factor" as the title states. Taste of Home has a good reputation for cookbooks though this does not seem to be on a par with those other ones.
Nice cookbook, like others from Taste of Home. Lots of pictures, which is important to me. Good recipes. Looking forward to using several recipes for summer events.

David Fasulo has been a member of the American Mountain Guide Association since 1989 and is currently an AMGA-certified single-pitch instructor and New York State licensed guide specializing in self-rescue courses. In 1996 David wrote the first edition of Self-Rescue. Ive been teaching self rescue for 25 years, this is the first book to take a practical, realistic view on what is possible and what is not. The explanations are better, the pics are better and while these techniques will constantly evolve this book is a must have for all Trad climbers.
Good review but needs greater depth to be useful.

The flow of the second edition is better because the decision making process is streamlined. If there is an easy way to do something - use it; if not - go to the more complex method. For me, the skills that are described take some study and a bit of practice to get comfortable with. A great way to spend a rainy day at the crags.
I recently dislocated my shoulder on a multipitch and it took 2.5 hours to finally get cell service, all while my arm was dangling uselessly and painfully by my side. I soon realized that the situation could've been worse had I decked when I fell unexpectedly. Climbing is inherently dangerous and it's very important to know what to do when things go wrong. I'm planning on reading and practicing the techniques during my injury time so that when I return to rock in a couple of months, I will feel much more equipped. I've already started it and it's extremely clear and comprehensive.

I have to agree with another reader on this about the style of this book.The author uses obfuscation to sound sophisticated. This is exactly what is NOT needed! Self rescue should be simple and the basic points explained first. A more systematic approach explained later after the ground work is covered, not first!!. Introducing new jargon that is purely jargon to get a name is of no use. Terms like 'Technical ledge' = Hanging climber (or rope under tension). Why not say 'hanging climber' instead of making it sound like something else. It's a rope for God's sake. Treat it like one!I personally feel the Author has got so wrapped up in naming a concept that the concept is lost in words. I don't believe in explaining something by trying to name it as something new. Just use the current vernacular - it's easier all round!
