Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Mind's Eye: Writings on Photography and Photographers, by Henri Cartier-Bresson

From Library Journal

Supremely accomplished and influential French photographer Cartier-Bresson guided the evolution of the photographic medium while creating an enormous body of work. His photographs of people, famous and obscure, always contain a strong psychological component deriving from formally perfect compositions and a temporal ambivalence that characterizes only the most powerful static images. This slight book contains short essays by Cartier-Bresson along with some less interesting aesthetic epigrams and tributes to fellow artists. This is the first published collection of his writings, though large chunks are taken from books he published in the 1950s and 1960s. And while there's not a great deal of his writings to be collected, what's here is pithy and laconic without being sententious. His artistic philosophy is well captured by his landmark 1952 essay "The Decisive Moment," contained here, probably the most poetically instructive evocation of the field photographer's art yet written. This is a useful and important title from one of the defining sets of eyes in the cumulative visual record of the 20th century. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.DDouglas F. About the Author

Henri Cartier-Bresson was born in France in 1908. He studied painting and then began to photograph in the early 1930s. After escaping from prison camp in 1943, he made portraits of artists, covered the liberation of Paris and filmed a documentary on the return of war prisoners. In 1947, the year he had his first show at MoMA, he also founded Magnum Photos with Robert Capa, George Rodger and David Seymour. Not long after, he began in earnest the life of a traveling photographer, working in India, Burma, Pakistan, Indonesia, China, Japan, Mexico and Cuba. His first, defining book "The Decisive Moment" was published by Teriade in 1952. By the late 60s, he had almost ceased making reportage to re-embrace his first passion, drawing. Cartier-Bresson created his Foundation in Paris in 2003, and passed away in 2004.

I think it would have been a tall order for Henri to write down the information you would need to reach his level of photography. There are some exceptional documentaries on YouTube for free that you could take advantage of by watching to get some insight from him in his own spoken words and examples. This short read is his collection of writings that brings to a point photography of the day as it was for him. When he mocks the idea of the golden rule being etched onto a lens I sort of grin at the thought of grid lines appearing in modern DSLR cameras to guide in the use of rule of thirds. All this being said - in written words Henri conveys what he's thinking in some of the more general senses of his time with photography where the camera is his sketchbook and where you can try to find another 1000 words in the photos themselves ;) Color photography has come a long long way in the digital world so at a first read you might wonder why he avoided the use of it and made a point to write about it. Therefore, you have to read his writings with the respect he is due for his total mastery of photography. Make no mistake - he was a master. He didn't take the time back then to write about the formula it takes for him and how you can use this formula to get the same results with any camera. He gives you something more intimate in fact - his raw emotions of the world he lived in and how the camera reached out into the world as an extension of himself. Each person has his or her own art inside them and if you understand and appreciate the very fundamentals of photography then you have taken one more step in trying to reach your goals of an artist perhaps. If you read this book with these things in mind you will take something away from it :)

Yes, this is a small book, and, possibly too much of it is taken up in verbal bouquets tossed to old friends, tourist information about side-trips to various countries, and practical advice to would-be photojournalists. But those asides aren't the guts of this wonderful book. The important message from this man, who without question was the most influential photographer of the twentieth century, is that if you want to make good photographs you need to look, and you need to internalize a kind of respect for subject, context and geometry that allows you to SEE when you look, without resorting to arbitrary crutches like the "rule of thirds."Probably the most important words in the book are these: "To take photographs means to recognize -- simultaneously and within a fraction of a second -- both the fact itself and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that give it meaning."That's what the book is really about. Anyone who hopes to become a competent photographer needs to internalize that message.

Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the founder of Magnum Photos rarely write, he rather shoot or sketch. That makes this book quite rare and significant. It compile Bresson writing in one book. Bresson discussed about his thought about photography especially photojournalism.By reading this book, you get insight about what inside Bresson's mind on photography, philosophy and what he thinks about other artists. Part two of the book discuss about Bresson's travel to China, Cuba etc. It provides interesting insight on his journey. However, this book is not technical how-to book, if you are looking for book that teach you how to take photo like Bresson, then you are looking for a wrong book. However, I think that the map/rules for Bresson's style can't be explained because it is basically no rules or map. But, you can get some valuable insights from this book and perhaps get a feel what Bresson is about. Here are some interesting paragraphs that I quote right from the book:"Subject does not consist of a collection of facts, for facts in themselves offer little interest. Through facts, however, we can reach an understanding of the laws that govern them, and be better able to select the essential ones which communicate reality.""The camera is for us a tool, not a pretty mechanical toy. In the precise functioning of the mechanical object perhaps there is an unconscious compensation for the anxietes and uncertainties of daily endevor. In any case, people think far too much about technique and not enough about seeing.""Complicated equipment and light reflectors and various other items of hardware are enough, to my mind, to prevent the birdie from coming out."

Keep reading and re-reading this little book for the gems it has within! Anybody interested in either Henri Cartier-Bresson the photographer and/or the person, as well those looking to find insight and enlightenment into the "decisive moment" and what it really means to capture moments of our lives (and those of others') ought to read this and hopefully obtain and retain some of the ideas presented in this compilations of things and topics related to HCB and photographic processes.

Very little if any technical guidance, but great insight into the philosophical approach of Bresson's work. A quick read that can be returned to as needed for inspiration.

It is a book of Cartier-Bressons' philosophy toward photography and art in general. I expected to read detailed approaches to photography that would make me a better photographer. I decided to read it again (its only a 100 pages long) and found that I appreciated it better the second time, and just let my 'artistic mind' wander with the author.

It's okay. A little disappointing. A fine, quick read, but not one to add to the collection. You're better off going to the rare book room in your public library and reading The Decisive Moment, or put the money for the book towards the re-release of the aforementioned book.

Simple, beautiful thoughts on creating the image in mind. Cartier-Bresson also shares insights on his travels and cultures he had experienced.

Be sure to purchase the newer version, the 2006 edition, with the DVD. It has the darker orange recipe titles, unlike the light yellow text of the original 2004 edition which was difficult to see.The "look inside this book" feature on this webpage still shows the light-yellow text Kindle sample pages, but it also states you will get the newer book version when ordering it. The samples also show the entire index, if you want to see what recipes are in the book. It's an awesome list.I really enjoyed the DVD, which has four cooking demonstrations of recipes from the book. The experts give detailed tips on what to watch for, as well as techniques, at different stages of the process.Given the size and scope of the book, it's unfortunate that photos couldn't be included. The illustrations, used as fillers of blank spaces between recipes, weren't helpful in any way (simple line drawings of eggs, milk bottles, herbs, etc.). A detailed drawing of how the dish will turn out, or a small photo, would have been more useful. There were many beautiful photographs accompanying the recipes in the Gourmet magazines; they could have easily been put into the DVD. Wouldn't that have been great?

While I, by far, am not a wine or food expert, I loved her stories. In this book ,she goes in disguise to critique the restaurants she will be writing about. Many are quite funny ( in all 3 books) and leave you with a smile or laughing out loud even if you are alone while reading.. I found that reading "Growing up at the table" and "Comfort me with Apples (her first 2 books) were necessary to really appreciate "Garlic and Sapphires" She includes many recipes from restaurants and people she learned from. The lists of ingredients are quite long and the instructions are very detailed making them easy to follow. If you are into fancy cooking, it is a great plus.

A surprisingly entertaining book. Of course, a newspaper writer should be a good writer, period, but it just didn't occur to me until I got into this. A friend recommended the book and I'm glad she did. There is humor and pathos in this memoir. The writing about the restaurants made me feel like I was sitting right at the table with Ruth (or whomever she was disguised as at the time.) I'm glad the book wasn't just a compilation of restaurant reviews- that would get tedious. Reichl has a real talent for descriptive, humorous, introspective writing. She wrote a couple other books and I will have to have a go at those, as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dining out or reading restaurant reviews. We have a great restaurant reviewer at our local paper and I was thinking he must have had some of the same experiences as this author had. It really makes you appreciate the craft.

I love this cookbook. I received this as a Christmas gift several years ago, and find that I still turn to this one more than any other for recipes and meal ideas. The variety is amazing, the recipes are worded clearly and accurately, and the recipe descriptions are helpful and informative. I have made probably over 100 recipes from this book and the results are generally delicious, sometimes spectacular. Some favorites are the Garlic Lime Chicken Breasts (SO flavorful), Roast Chicken with Pan Gravy (simple, succulent, juicy), Oven-Braised Beef with Tomato Sauce and Garlic (extremely simple to prepare and so delicious), Roasted Beet Salad (sweet beets with crispy Asian pear--go so well together), Pasta with Asparagus Lemon Sauce (highly addictive--and my kids ask for it all the time), Pumpkin Apple Bread (can't wait until the local apple stand gets their Granny Smith apples each year for this bread), Macaroni and Cheese (really spectacular with the crispy Panko topping), Creamless Creamy Squash Soup (have wanted to share this with many restaurants who can't seem to make a squash soup with a good texture and flavor), Chicken with Cornmeal Dumplings (the dumplings are very tender--great comfort food), Cappucino Brownies (elicit raves and pleas for the recipe whenever we serve them), Hungarian Chocolate Mousse Cake Bars (easy, feed a large group), Burnt Orange Panna Cotta (YUM), Pumpkin Chiffon Pie with Gingersnap Crust (this and the Pumpkin Cheesecake with Bourbon-Sour Cream Topping have become Thanksgiving staples), Apple and Calvados Galette (sensational--especially the super flaky all-butter crust). I could go on and on and on.There are some reviews commenting on the light yellow print used for recipe titles, but this was corrected in later printings (we have bought several copies to give as wedding gifts). Along with the recipes, the recipe descriptions, the tutorials, the section introductions, and paragraphs scattered throughout the book give helpful and valuable information on specific ingredients and cooking techniques, as well as the history of many recipes.Fun to read, fun to cook from. A valuable addition to any cookbook collection.

I've read Garlic and Sapphires twice now, and enjoyed it very much both times. It reads nearly like fiction, and has multiple LOL moments for sure. Reich has an engaging writing stile that is at its best in this book; I've read others like "Tender at the Bone" and didn't like them nearly so well, though they do fill in the blanks and I was able to make several connections between those books and G&S in this re-read. I like the recipes I've tried so far, and look forward to trying more - especially the lamb and Brussels sprouts.

This is a compact intro into caving. I learned something new with every paragraph, and that is what I like in a book. Every chapter provides no-nonsense instructional material and thus a time-efficient way to learn. Only the preface/intro is a bit unfocused. It's a practical book with clear and compelling explanations, about 200 pages strong and amply illustrated.Various technological advances have found their way into the 2009 edition, such as LED headlamps, digital cave photography, and even videography.Among my favorite tidbits are the wisdom of eating a substantial breakfast on the day of the caving trip, long crawls where you cannot turn around, the physical concept of the fall factor for a rope, the warning that an on-camera flash will reflect on otherwise unnoticed fog, and the use of photo stacking for cave photography. That said, the book is far more systematic than this random list of items may suggest. As others have pointed out, the book is centered on Great Britain. Where location matters, the rest of the world receives at most half of the attention. Life in caves is divided into Britain and 'overseas'. 'Where to cave' dedicates 12 pages to the UK and 2 pages to North America, where most native speakers of English live.In conclusion, I really like this book, because it's tremendously useful and up to date---also beautifully illustrated.

The Complete Caving Manual left me feeling unsatisfied. I am a novice caver who has only been twice. I don't know enough to know what questions I should be asking, so while I felt that the information provided was good, I didn't feel like it made me a whole lot more confident than I was before. There is a lot of information about cave life, safety, conservation, and things like that that were interesting. Most of the examples talked about caving in Britain, so if you aren't in the UK, you will have to relate in a more general way. I will keep this book. It may become more useful to me as my knowledge grows, but in the meantime I am looking for something else as well.

I have had personal experience with Mr. Sparrow and find him to be a very competent caving instructor. His book, which I wish I had autographed, is very insightful. Mr. Sparrow has taken me caving several times and have felt completely safe and at ease as a novice. Highly recommend this book and his caving services. From the start of this book it gives you the very basics you need to know about caves and caving. Don't go caving without at least having this book on hand. What a guide.

Good design. Honestly described. Box is quite serviceable. Indexing is functional. I have enjoyed using them. Would that there was a companion set with another 500 signs.

ASL is my second language, and I find these flash cards to be very useful. While attending college, Flash cards were my main studying technique. So, these flash cards fit right into my studying / repetition habits nicely. I like how these flash cards have a color photo on the front with a visual representation of the sign and on the back have a writtin representation / explanation along with related words. Flash cards are handy and can be taken on the go.

I have been trying to learn sign language for a few years now using videos and books but these methods have failed me. I saw these flashcards on Amazon and decided to order because using flash cards have always helped me to learn. The cards come with a key chain like ring so you are not overwhelmed with 500 cards and can take a few cards and study on the go. The set up of each card makes it easy to study alone or with a group/partner.

I bought these flash cards about a month before starting a college ASL 1 class, thinking that it would be useful to know some basic signs before starting the course. Most of the practical and important words that I could think of were included in the cards; not all of them, but I wasn't expecting all of them to be there anyway. The pictures are clear and easy to understand, and the ASL signs that require motion have arrows pointing to the direction of the sign/indicating the movement you should be making. I also like that these are flash cards rather than cards that have both the word and the picture on one side because it allowed me to test my memory of how to sign the words. It was nice to know some signs before starting the class, and my professor taught us how to sign the words just like these cards show. I am currently in ASL 3, and I still reference these from time to time.

I have not yet put these to work in my ASL training but do have some feedback based on what I have seen so far.1. The punch hole in the cards is to thin/weak to expect they will hold up when using the included binder ring. If you are like me and like to have things like this on your person at all times so you can practice I see many cards getting loose, torn or lost, you may want to consider buying punch hole tape to firm up the attaching point.2. The box does not allow for peering in to see what you are looking for. You need to take a handful of cards out to rifle through to find what you are looking for. Definitely not intended to be used as a reference index but just for storage.3. Cards are flimsy, I would have preferred more substantial paper stock, what was wrong with using paper stock like playing cards? They would be a bit stiffer and have a coating to protect them. I was going to give these to my kids when I was done but not sure they (all) will hold up that long.4. I like that they cards are numbered so you can put them back in the right order.5. The pictures seem clear to understand and the arrows are also clear as to direction of movement.6. Have not yet concluded if all the words included are the must haves, that will be my first task since I want to incorporate these into my class lessons.Once I have had an opportunity to test drive these I will update my review.

These are Great! I only wish there were more! Wish there were different “chapters” or subjects they were grouped in! Quality is great, the instructions inside described stuff I didn’t even learn in ASL beginning classes, pictures are good. Sometimes the arrows are hard to understand the direction, but otherwise these are perfect. I want so many more words though so I had to make my own flash cards which were not nearly as great or compact. Even my deaf friend got them and loved them!

My daughter loves these cards - she willingly goes over them and memorizes the language almost every day. It teaches the basics of how to get along and speak to someone who is deaf. Of course the first thing she looked up were the dirty words, but thankfully, they were not included. If you want to say hello, and get the general idea of what someone is saying - I think it's 1/2 art and 1/2 science to these translations - then this is the set for you to quickly learn sign language. The cards are heavy duty and come on a ring so they are easy to flip through, but will not drop on the ground and make a mess.

I'm a teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and use this product for some of my lessons. The photos are large enough to view and I like the content on the back of each photo (term, definition, explanation of physical sign). It could use, however, a card or paper with a list of every sign included in the box. Although the cards are alphabetized with color coding for each letter visible from the side of the deck, you still have to thumb through all of the cards in that section to see if that sign is included in the box. An alphabetized list on one document our a couple cards would be helpful. Also, the term being signed (printed on the back with other information) is not in a large enough font to see from any distance but in your own lap. So if you are working with someone else, you always have to pass the card. You can't really use them as a flashcard - flashing the sign, and then the term on the otherside. The flashcards are hole punched and the box includes a metal ring the cards could be attached to, however the cards are not durable enough that they would last long on the metal ring.I like the product, but a list of terms and larger font would be nice.

Greg Rucka's crime writing skills continue to impress me, and Southworth's art is amazing. This volume has a car chase that is drawn astonishingly well. If you like mysteries, female protagonists, or Greg Rucka, you should pick this volume up.

Great A++++

This is the last of the books I received in the Powerless Comic Bento box. It is a detective story set in Portland, OR.A musician has a guitar stolen at the end of a long tour and hires the detective, Dex Parios, to find it. She is a very typical private eye, but that is just fine for this book. Of course, Dex discovers that there is more to the story as she digs into the investigation. She runs across band members and roadies and is confronted by the DEA.The art is great. There is a chase sequence about halfway through the book that is fantastic. I always enjoy when creators are willing to take a chance on doing something different like that. Not much to say on this one. It fits within the genre very well, but I would have liked to have seen some more development on Dex.

The 3rd story in a good series. Each story is a stand alone adventure so you can pickup here and still enjoy. However there is some overlapping back story items from the first two books. Dex Parios is a private detective in Portland Oregon. She balances her career and caring for younger special needs brother who has Downs. This story finds Dex investigating the sever beating of one of her friends outside of a soccer match. Through the course of the story we also learn more background on Dex and some of the demons she deals with as a result of her time as an Army intelligence officer. Dex has to deal with her personal issues and the possibility of and old foes involvement in the beating of her friend. A well written story, a very human protagonist, and excellent characters combine for one great story.

This is a pretty good read. I love the illustration work, and the story was odd in a good way. The story seemed kind of goofy, but there is a much bigger, darker story going on in the background. I definitely want to read the other volumes to continue on the story and see how everything unfolds. I read this one right through rather than coming back to it at a later time. I would reach the end of a chapter and want to know more, want to know what happens next. It's not something I would usually read, in fact it's way out of my normal reading interests. I usually only go for superhero based stuff, but I definitely recommend Stumptown, it's enjoyable.

The art in this novel is so gorgeous. I love the feel, as well as the colors used. This hardcover is definitely worth getting. It has a great look and feel with matte cover and pages. Definitely a beautiful work of art. As for the story I really liked it as well. It wasn't the typical mystery which I loved. This was my first Stumptown book since I didn't read the first, but I totally enjoyed this one regardless

I picked this up off the library shelf because the color pallate of the cover intrigued me. I'll admit, sometimes I am that shallow.I'm glad I did. This was a nice little action-packed mystery based on rock-n-roll and drugs. What I didn't know when I picked it up was that it was part of a series. I think there were a couple of call-backs to character-development things that I missed, but for the most part this is a pretty self-contained book that is a fine way to waste an afternoon.

My favorite volume of Stumptown... this collected edition has a distinct advantage to reading it in single issues: the matte paper & slightly oversized hardcover format make it well worth the money for fans of complex stories about fallible & all too human private detective Dex Parios.

In the book I Feel You: The Surprising Power of Extreme Empathy (Houghton Mifflin, 251 pp. (26 US$)), Cris Beam makes empathy present. She brings forth empathy her engagement with difficult cases that challenge our empathy, including her own conflicts. In the process of struggling with, against, and for empathy, she succeeds in bringing forth empathy and making empathy present for the reader. From an empathic point of view, I can think of no higher praise. This book is a page-turner, and is laced with the straight-ahead, deadpan humor of a Dave Barry, skewering all sides of the debate (admittedly from a progressive LGBTQ perspective) with an equal opportunity debunking of hypocrisies, inauthenticities, and blind spots. There are empathy lessons in abundance; but, being a human being, Beam has her blinds spots, too. How could it be otherwise? This is a work of nonfiction, but there are some surprises, so I hereby issue a spoiler alert. Beam tells an engaging tale; indeed you can’t make this stuff up.Beam is a would-be “bad girl,” who has written a very good book. In a world of constrained, limited empathy, the empathic person is a non-conformist. Beam is one of those, too, and succeeds in sustaining a nuanced skepticism about the alternating hype and over-valuation of empathy over against those who summarily dismiss it. Most ambivalently, she calls out the corporate infatuation with empathy. I paraphrase the corporate approach: Take a walk in the other person’s shoes in order to sell them another pair.Beam reports she is parenting a transgender child; and she relates how she was ready angrily to confront the celebrated neuroscientist V. S. Ramachandran over a publication that implied there was a third gender. He dodged the bullet by blaming the graduate student, who did the research. Without skipping a beat, Beam points out: “In my lifetime, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been utilized in this country on people like me to try to rid them of their socially objectionable behavior” (p. 54).Beam’s account of extreme empathy, sometimes also called “radical empathy” needs telling. In brief, extreme empathy is empathy for the perpetrator. Empathy with victims and survivors is a relatively low bar, though compassion fatigue is a risk, but what about empathy for the perpetrators, those who cause suffering for others, behave like bullies, commit crimes? To be sure, people who are a threat to others or to themselves may need to be taken out of the community to protect the community and themselves. But incarcerating a person – whether in jail or a locked mental ward – rarely makes people better. They need treatment. Hence, the need for extreme empathy. In the section entitled Ars Empathica, Beam is on a tear. She goes from a theatre piece depicting an interview with Eugen de Kock, the infamous chief of police of Vlakplaas, apartheid’s death squad in South Africa, to a convention for owner’s of Real Dolls, the expensive, anatomically realistic, silicone sex dolls that made their mainstream debut in the 2007 movie Lars and the Real Girl. Never having seen the movie, I acknowledge I need to get out more. The challenge posed by Beam (and the “thought experiment”) is: now empathize with this: de Kock, Lars, various perpetrators. We can all empathize with lost and abused pets. Nor is anyone saying to stop doing so. However, let’s raise the bar. Everyone has to decide for her- or himself. What was de Kock thinking? Feeling? Just following orders (again)? The Orca killer whole who died of a brain aneurysm after repeatedly smashing its head into the side of the prison, oops, I mean enclosure? Beam frames much of this debate as performance art, otherwise the contrast would be – how should I put it delicately – maudlin and grotesque. Art is no longer beautiful; it is designed to get us to think. And Beam does that too. However, then perhaps not surprisingly, empathy shows up – is made present – comes forth – as our shared, struggling humanity. One Real Doll owner lost his [real human] wife to cancer. People have different ways of expressing their suffering. Who am I to judge? Beam: “People on feminist sites were calling Real Doll owners ‘fat, ugly people who can’t get dates’ (the very slurs used against feminists)” (p. 76). The matter is nuanced. The husband of the cancer victim is a cross-dresser. Trigger alert: Pending politically incorrect thought: in addition to objectifying women, Real Doll owners are projecting humanity onto objects. It gets personal. Beam reports that she is a survivor of a floridly psychotic mother and a father who, at least temporarily (and probably to save himself), abandoned Cris to her fate with that woman. As a teenager, Beam escapes to her father and his second marriage only to be rejected when she “comes out” as a lesbian some years later. Fast forward to Beam’s own second marriage [both to women].Beam’s partner announces that the partner (at that time a “she”) is committed to transitioning to becoming a man. Beam decides to support her (becoming him) and sticks with it through the top surgery, administering the testosterone shots. The partner tells Beam: “I will love you always [regardless of my gender].” Beam decides to believe the partner. (See what I mean? You can’t make this stuff up.)Things hit a rough patch; they do not go well. Beam does not say the following (but I (and Simone de Beauvoir) did): biology is not destiny; woman is more than a mere womb; man is not mere testosterone. But sometimes not much more. Testosterone will not increase one’s libido; but it can make a person more aggressive. Beam reports that she ends up with a black eye and a split lip. Beam moves out.Beam engages with the distinctions between empathy, compassion, and forgiveness – as near as I can tell, putting them on a continuum of distinct but overlapping and ways of relating to struggling humanity, including one’s own. This reviewer found Beam’s account of the contribution to empathy of Heinz Kohut, MD, who put the psychotherapeutic (and psychoanalytic) uses of empathy on the map, to be engaging and compelling. Ultimately, the world needs expanded empathy as well as more compassion and forgiveness. This is not an “either-or” game.Nor is this a softball review, and I decisively disagree with Beam when she says that empathy is “mutual vulnerability” and approvingly quotes André Keet: “there are no neat boundaries between victim, perpetrators, beneficiaries, and bystanders …” (p. 191). While such a statement is descriptively accurate once the suicide bomb goes off (or the father walks, leaving the psychotic mother and child behind), the commitment of empathy is to respect boundaries and (re)establish them when the boundaries have broken down or been violated.Empathy is all about boundaries, and Beam, like so many of us, has her share of struggles with them. No easy answers here. But one final thought as my personal response to Beam’s thought provoking and inspiring work on empathy. We may usefully consider the poet Robert Frost: “Good fences make good neighbors.” I add: There is a gate in the fence, and over the gate is written the word “Empathy.”

Pres. Obama noted an "Empathy Deficit" in our country, and it seems to have gotten much worse recently. Nothing could do more to revive Empathy in our personal and political lives, than this big-hearted and brainy book. Author Beam synthesizes the knowledge and wisdom on the subject; travels internationally to broaden our perspectives; and provides immensely serviceable personal advice. She's unafraid of hot topics like human trafficking of children and the exploitation of the concept in "Empathic Marketing". She's honest about the realms of life where empathy is not useful. She tells great stories, and celebrates the role of our imaginations in nurturing our capacity. "Empathy isn't a feeling," she says, "but rather both a primal and very sophisticated mode that gives us access to feelings. It's a way of being human and there are ways to harness and improve it for social good."

I thought this was an excellent book. I thought it would be a 'pop culture' type book about empathy but it was so much more. It had real depth and went into topics that affect the country and the world today, like human trafficking and reconciliation between wronged groups and perpetrators. Stories about the author's life were woven in and completely appropriate to the topics covered, not just 'tacked on'. I highly recommend this book.

I rarely give up reading a book before finishing it. With “I Feel You” I would have been inflicting self-harm had I read to the end. Because of empathy for myself, I put this book down about a quarter of the way through and am deleting it from my Kindle so as not to infect the other books on my device.
