Review

“If there’s a heaven just for readers, this is it.” — O, The Oprah Magazine ★"Mustich's informed appraisals will drive readers to the books they've yet to read, and stimulate discussion of those they have." —Publishers Weekly, Starred Review ★"A treasure chest for book lovers everywhere" —Library Journal, Starred Review   ★"Every so often, a reference book appears that changes the landscape of its area of focus. In the case of reading and readers' advisory, this is one such book....lively, witty, insightful prose...It might be wise to invest in several copies of this wonderful meditation on life lived with and enhanced by the written word." —Booklist, Starred Review   "All in all, the literate public—what novelist Robertson Davies dubbed the clerisy—can only be grateful for, and awed by, this product of 14 years of reading and research…It’s hard to imagine that such a massive compendium could have been done better."—Michael Dirda, The Washington Post "Absolutely impressive…. This book is not just a source of information; it's a wellspring of wisdom, intelligence, empathy and generosity."—Ingrid Rossellini, author of Know Thyself: Western Identity from Classical Greece to the Renaissance "As the owner of a 90-year-old bookselling institution, I am not easily fazed by 1,000 books, but Mustich’s literary bucket list stopped me in my tracks. His expansive scope is coupled with a delightful wit and a perfect eye for the surprise detail. Never again will you have to wonder what to read next. A book you’ll cherish for a lifetime!" —Nancy Bass Wyden, Proprietor, Strand Book Store "Chief among the thousands of pleasures here is the delightfully erudite company of James Mustich. Look up your favorite books; find ones you don’t know; argue about the list with friends. Read!" —Jean Strouse, author, Alice James and Morgan: American Financier "James Mustich’s book is aimed at a society engulfed in words but desperately poor in the talents that reading can bring—judgment, taste, empathy, wit. The book is not a list of canonical works, though many classics are listed and lovingly described. No, the “1000 Books to Read” is an invocation of the pleasures to be had from many kinds of books—genre fiction, journalism, poetry, history, and memoir, the good and the great, the illustrious and the semi-forgotten, all summoned by Mustich’s taste. You open it at any point and jump from author to author; you follow his hints and read related works by other writers, and you find your own taste emerging, proud and strong, from Mustich’s provocations. 1,000 Books is surpassingly useful as well as good." —David Denby, staff writer at The New  Yorker and author of Great Books: My Adventures with Homer, Rousseau, Woolf, and Other Indestructible Writers of the Western World "If you’ve ever doubted that books were the greatest invention of all time, and that they carry within them our collective memories and dreams, as well as any semblance of intelligence we have as a species, pick up James Mustich’s 1,000 Books to Read Before You Die and start reading." —Ken Burns "If I were as erudite, entertaining, insightful, and articulate as James Mustich, I could come up with 1,000 reasons to get his book. But here's one: Whether you're looking for something to read for personal edification or fun, for escapism or relevance, you can survey the literary world with Mustich as an experienced, enthusiastic guide. His work is an essential resource for anyone anywhere plagued by that infernal question: What do I read next?" —Bradley Graham, co-owner of Politics and Prose Bookstore

This is a book of magnificent brilliance. I loved it. But, then, I'm one of those addicts who spent several decades awaiting Jim's monthly catalogue of literary gems for sale...to read all the descriptions and to enjoy the books that seemed destined for me to read. Well, I'm 62 now and I've got to get cracking on the 1,000 here (making good use of the handy checklist in the back, which I will photocopy because I have a deep aversion to writing within books). Oh and you will also have some quibbles...my only one so far is that I believe that More's "Utopia" deserved more than just a footnote at the end of the Erasmus entry. I am sure I will think of more (no pun intended), but that's also a great part of the fun. If you love books (and I certainly do) I guarantee that you shall love this book and treasure it and refer to it time and again. OK, so Jim convinced me to read Dostoevsky. I'll start with Notes From The Underground. Wow I have so much to look forward to thanks to Jim's book. You will too. I am adding on November 15 that I just bought two copies for birthday gifts and plan to buy a dozen more as Christmas gifts...that's how much I love this book!

The Kindle edition of the book lacks the Index of the hardcover version. This makes it practically useless, unless you want to scroll thru dozens or hundreds of pages to find an author. I found the actual contents, the essays, etc, to be as notable as other reviewers. But no Index? Gimme a break! The Kindle is also entirely black and white, unlike the very colorful print edition. It may be awkwardly large to haul around when compared to the Kindle, but there's no joy in having the Kindle edition. Get it in print form!

As if I didn't have enough trouble keeping my TBR pile under control as it is, now this book comes along and recommends even more titles?! It's not that I haven't read any of the books the author discusses, it is the sheer number of others that he offers like a bibliophile's buffet. Mustich has covered a wide range of genres, age and reading levels, time periods, and cultures. Entries range from Aristotle to Vonnegut, bedtime stories such as Goodnight Moon to horror like Dracula, and adventures like Homer's Iliad or Ender's Game. The entry for a book might include a synopsis, a brief description of the authors' life, the social climate at the time of publication, or other relevant facts. Endnotes also point out other titles by the same author, books for further information about each subject, adaptations of the work, any awards it won, and read-alikes by other authors. It's like having an "if you like that, then try this" feature on steroids.Quotes from critics or other authors underscore the sort of reactions a book inspires in its readers, although Mustich does a wonderful job of expressing his own opinions. He says this about Roald Dahl, for instance, "Standing out among his storytelling treats is Matilda, whose superheroine is heroic - and triumphant - first and foremost because she reads." Along with the written entries there are also images of authors, book covers, teaser posters for movie adaptations, historical photos, and reproductions of iconic illustrations.Booknote sidebars cover related titles, while More to Explore sections group books with similar themes (even other books about books). Back matter includes a general index of the books and authors mentioned, and "A Miscellany of Special Lists" has curated groupings of titles based on subject, style, or audience. The explanation of the book's organization explains all these features as well as letting readers know that over 3,000 authors and 6,000 additional books are mentioned besides the main entries. (So does that make it 7,000 books to read before you die?) The companion website has books indexed by chronology and genre. No matter what sort of reader you are - constant, binge, persnickety, omnivorous - you will find more useful information than you are likely to have the time to implement. I suggest investing in some highlighters or sticky tabs if you purchase a print version, or be prepared to bookmark your e-book edition like crazy. You won't want to forget any of the entries or other details that catch your interest.Highly recommended for YA and up - or as a reference for school librarians and teachers to help steer students to titles that suit their tastes.

As has been mentioned, the Kindle edition is virtually unusable, as there is no index, outside of alphabetical chapters of author's last names, leaving the reader to scroll through 30-40 books to the object of desire. A simple solution would be to put a LOCATION NUMBER FOR EACH BOOK in the list of books, so it can be searched. The book itself is superb. I will be ordering the hardcover version soon in addition to the kindle

#257,392 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Briefly, I was sort of thrown into a situation where I was suddenly a landlord of 8 properties (I know, sounds strange, but true). I had to quickly get up to speed on what was required of me, what I should require of my tenants, what I needed for insurance, etc. I found this book at my local library and liked it so much that I purchased it so I can keep it handy. It's very easy to read and explains things from the ground up. It also discusses the pros & cons if you're thinking about buying rental properties but haven't yet (I skipped that section because I was already neck-deep in properties). I highly recommend this book, and the NOLO website has also been extremely helpful.

Excellent coverage of all tips and topics if you're looking for the 101 on renting out a single family home. After reading, I was able to communicate with my property manager more effectively because I could tailor my questions better. It's always easier to learn things once you know what questions to ask, and this book gave enough information to get me going in the right direction. I was able to use certain information found in this book almost immediately, with positive results. Don't expect to get in-depth with every chapter or subject matter, especially those concerning individual state or municipal laws, but you'll at least have enough know-how to keep a reasonable expectation and make appropriate decisions. Great investment!

Easy to read and very helpful! I downloaded several landlord books on my Kindle HD 7 and feel this, among a few others, was a great read and definitely helped me to provide a good landlord-tenant relationship start, and showed me where to place boundaries on requests, rent due dates, etc. The best part though was how easy to read it was! This speaks in plain English and was as uncomplicated as possible. I read through the whole book in one day and reference it frequently.

Became an unintentional landlord (needed more space/better schools for the fam, no luck selling our condo), so I needed a crash-course on the basics. This book has been very helpful for getting an overview of what all's involved, including tax issues, handling money, how to treat tenants, etc. Solid book for beginners, and then you can dig into topics on your own, or get help (from tax preparers, etc).

I purchased three different pbooks and this is the one we read cover to cover. A must-have for the first time landlord!

A good guide to almost everything you need to consider for renting out a house. The only shortfall, really, is the lack of discussion about raising rents -- a tricky topic especially for a first-time landlord. The authors should consider an additional book, on the topic of renting out part of your home -- like a mother-in-law unit or a room. The issues are similar but with some details that worry would-be landlords.

Lots of good tips in this. Went a long way to calming my fears about becoming a landlord and also gave me the ability to ask intelligent questions of those who knew more than me when I had the opportunity. Highly recommended.

First Time Landlord provides a useful introduction for anyone considering entering the property rental business. And it does emphasis that this is a business and most be treated as such. While it does not go into great depth, the book covers a wide spectrum of relevant topics and provides very useful guidance for obtaining additional information. As the book makes clear, there are many considerations involved in renting to someone, probably much more than the average person realizes. In some ways this book is a reality check for the novice thinking of becoming a landlord.

#37,786 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is an interesting book, one of my more favorite ones. The main couple did not get a sudden large inheritance or win the lottery to fund their preparations, they slowly saved for a rainy day with food and other supplies. This should encourage anyone who wants to start to begin, and you can start slowly, but you need to start! Anyone who has gone through a hurricane or ice storm understands the need to have some food and water on hands. It really helps that the main character had a military background. It is sadly realistic that the veneer of civilization is so thin, but after a few days without food, people are not rational and are totally in lower brain function. Later if you ask them why they were so stupid, they will have no clue (regrets, yes, but no idea as to why they did that). I found it totally acceptable that Carmen, who died in the first book, is mention. Anyone who has lost someone dear, knows that you don't get over it in a day and talking helps process grief.

Another tremendous and entertaining work by the Dunaways....!Book 2 carry's thru with the same moral and post-apocalyptic adventure that they created in Book 1. I especially like both books because neither are afraid to include God and a belief in a helpful higher power, into the lives of the characters. Although realistic to an art, the one thing that might be missing is: with the Johnson's living in such a strong farming area, more detail to weather, crops, time of year for planting & harvesting could be added. It wasn't until near the end of Book 2, could I determine what season or time of year that all of this was taking place. As a group they have a tremendous set of skills, but no one seems to be a farmer who is worried about planting, growing and harvesting for the coming year ahead..........just saying. Thanks again for such an entertaining and relevant series of books.....!

I gave this book five stars because the story, in my estimation, is not only good, but the premise of the story is believable; even highly possible. The downside of this work, though, is the punctuation, grammar and spelling: it's terrible. I am a news writer for a small town news agency and am a stickler for proper English. William and Cindy, please do some editing before you put out your next book. Thanks.

because it is NOT a book of preparing & surviving a cataclysmic event. It does, though, present acts which each violate at least 3 of the Ten Commandments as legitimate and healthy, and it tosses aside one's consciously acting against the Commandments despite knowing better with the plan to seek forgiveness later.I am not focusing this review on any attempt to argue Biblical instructions. I am warning the readers that if they are seeking a way for Christians to survive events, be prepared for quite foreign & personal doctrine which may highly offend you.--particularly when they condone murdering-in-anger completely justified. As for the Dunlevy's second literary work, this too, screams for an editor and a proofreader AND A NEED TO FOCUS ON A SINGULAR PURPOSE OF THE WORK then moving and building on that goal. Lacking all three the reader is left with Sunday sermons and wondering what happened to the new government that was introduced chapters back, or what is going on with the two rescued young women, and a reader unable to know when the main character, Vince, is actually speaking out or thinking a response and that makes quite a difference. With page after page of sermons placed throughout the book and never moving along the topic of surviving, I could not finish reading their work. As an editor, proofreader, and writer, I believe the co-authors had misguided beliefs that they had the skill to smoothly blend personal convictions with a hot and popular topic of survival but have alienated their readers and potential readers.I those many faults and lacks, cannot recommend this book nor its prelude.

If plan on reading these books, part one and part two...don't pick one up unless you have the time...because YOU CANNOT PUT THEM DOWN!! For those of us who have been "watching" what is going on in the world and "see" with understanding...this may be a novel, but it's all a too real scenario and should wake people up. It teaches much in the process. How to prepare in case there was a big emergency.

Love the Tears of Ephraim book series! Can't wait for the third one! But, Wow! Makes me think about needing a whole lot of common sense; i.e.... an extra case of water at the grocery store and a few more canned goods here and there....sure couldn't hurt along with my faith in the Lord~~Thank you, Bill & Cindy Dunaway, for your great writing style and story. God bless~~~

I have read book 1 and finished Book 2. I can honestly say that the Books compliment one another. This is a great novel that keeps one interests searching for the next set of cliff hangers in the novel and what Vince's group is going to do to keep their world together and safe. I will keep looking for more novels to come from William Dunaway!!!

I got very emotional reading this book. Tear formed on more than one occasion while reading. The reason I didnt give it a 5 was just was too my religion throughout some of the chapters. The battle scenes were realistic as I experienced those very same feeling. I loved the fact I didnt find any glaring misspellings and grammatical errors like in most dystopian books. I will certainly buy the next book in the series as I need to know what happened to those left behind.
