The sixth edition of this book is a great book for anyone taking Plant taxonomy at an upper division college level. It goes over basic plant morphology, and an overview of plant evolution. It covers numerous plant families and devotes two pages to most, the larger such as Asteraceae has 12 pages with floral formulas. This book has gone through several editions with different authors, the sixth edition has cleared up much of the disorganization from previous edition, but there are still a number of mistakes in the index, directing you to the wrong page. Do not get earlier editions as they do not have current classifications although this edition does need updating. I wish I had this book when I had taken plant taxonomy. This is a not a field guide and is not for those just learning botany. Once again, do not buy earlier editions unless very cheap.
Poor quality paper and binding, it's well written but VERY poorly organized. I'm glad I have it as a reference but I wish that a better text would have been required for the class.
The book came a bit torn up, parts of it are falling out. The pages are perforated inside so they just come loose. Has amazing content, I learned so much using this book in class. it goes very in depth into plant anatomy and how the various families differ. Worth dealing with the pages falling everywhere.

Is the difference between the 5th Edition and the 6th worth the $100 the 6th Edition costs vs. the $6 for a used copy of the 5th Edition? I needed the 6th Edition for a class but bought a copy of the 5th Edition instead. Comparing it to a library copy of the newer edition I'd say there are maybe a total of 5-7 pages worth of new text, and a total of 4 new exercise questions in the entire text. So if you need this for a class but have access to a copy you can borrow of the current edition, save you $$$ and get the older edition. You can easily read or make photo copies (I think a few pages out of a several hundred page text would be considered "fair use") of the pages that have been added to the newest edition.

It takes the patience of a saint to read this, especially for an old reader. The small light type on super shiny paper is hard to read, even with a magnifying glass. Because of this impediment, I can't comment on the content I can't read. The paper facilitates lovey reproductions of the art work. However, I was looking for more on a theory of contemporary beauty as portrayed through advertising and commercial media.
A beautiful book. I misplaced mine (loaned it to someone? or it's someplace where it will show up? or?) and so missed having it around to just pick up and peruse from time to time that I replaced it with this used copy in like-new condition. I don't do that often and is probably the strongest evidence I can offer of the pull of this volume. I also own Eco's companion book on Ugliness -- purchased many years after the first HoB. Hope I don't lose it, because I enjoy having it, too, but would be less compelled to replace it. Besides the visuals, Eco's text is a pleasure.

The book receives five stars for the selection of very good color reproduction. The text as many others have pointed out is ponderous. Before buying the book have a look at amazon's own review of this book. They for instance note that only half of the book is written by Eco.The book is a fairly irreverent description of beauty. The book is really a description of female beauty in the western world through the centuries. I find the pictures and the text elaborating on the pictures interesting. The other part of the text is too tedious for my taste. I an not particularly interested in reading lengthy sections of other people's writing that the author considers important.Eco has also written The Infinity of Lists: An Illustrated Essay in the same series. That book is actually rather impossible to understand (two stars), but it also has beautiful pictures.The current book is worth four stars; barely.
A well written and interesting book but you had better have very good eyes. The largest text is about 1/16 inch high but some is even smaller this, both sizes are used throughout the book, (perhaps 12 and 10 point). Not easy to read, especially in the (extensive) sections where its colored light blue. What would have possessed anyone to do this i have no idea, though I am referring to the paper back version, maybe the hard cover is a larger format.
Only Umberto Eco could write a book that defines beauty through the ages of western culture as this one does. He looks at the great contemporary writers for insight into the great contemprary artists. Umberto brings Plato to the front to explain early Greek art, and brings in Hume to explain humanist style. It is a classical book that should be used in colleges to not only introduce people to art but to thinking about art and words. The color plates are wonderful. What I wish is that the Italian CDrom was available in English. One can see from the style used that this book was a great interactive CDrom.Reading Umberto's insights and looking at great art..what a wonderful way to spend a morning at starbucks!
This is a beautifully bound book, even next to its original hard cover release. It's nice and compact without compromising the quality of the photographs. Even though I got this for research purposes, I've decided not to mark the pages with my notes so that I can have this sit on my coffee table. A must for all Eco fans !

This is one of the books in "Back Pain" that any spine care specialist should read. I personally feel fortunate to have done it. Six years ago, after finishing reading it( the 3rd edition, 1992), I was basically converted from a GYII physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Resident with little interest in taking care patients with low back pain, because of the lack of knowledge and skill, to someone who started considering a career as spine care specialist. Now, I am a fellowship trained spine interventional specialist, board certified by the American Board of Phyiscial Medicine & Rehabilitation as well as by the American Board of Pain Medicine, practicing interventional pain management and spine care at the Physicians' Pain Specialists of Alabama, Mobile, Alabama. I am very thankful for this book because it helped me in moving the most important step towards becoming a spine care specialist. The authors did a superb job integrating things such as history, physical exam, spine mechanics, spine impages (X-ray, MRI, CT) together with clinical correlates. It is such an rewarding experience after reading this book to realize that I have achieved the ability to coorelate the spine image findings in X-ray, MR or CT with its spinal anatomical structures and then infer them to their specific clinical presentations. Most of the Chapters were well written, especially those on" Pathology & Pathogenesis of Low Back Pain", "The Site & Nature of the Lesion", "Lumbar Spine Imaging", "Differential Diagnosis of Low Back Pain", "The Three Phases & Three Joints" were extremely well written and informative. It has more lumbar spine images than any other spine care books that I have come across.It was with great enthsusiasm and excitement that I bought the 4th Edition(1999), hoping for new thoughts and updates, especially in "Diagnositc & Therapeutic Techniques " as the previous edition was 7 years earlier. However, to my surprise, I found little change in this Chapter. I was also a little disappointed by the inferior paper quality of the 4th Edition in comparison to the 3rd Edition. Even though a few more recent referrences were added to the 4th Edition, the core contents of the two editions are about the same. Therefore, my advice to readers is: One is enough, whether it is 3rd or 4th Edition. You need at least one.

Annie Martin’s moss book is nothing short of fantastic! I highly recommend it to anyone who is even vaguely interested in moss. Mossin’ Annie she knows her stuff and does a fine job of making mosses accessible to everyone. I own several moss books and this is my all-time favorite and the book I go to first for assistance.The book is superbly illustrated with photographs of moss on nearly every page. It is the best-illustrated moss book on the market. And the photos are beautiful! There are a number of pictures of how to use moss in the garden, a section of some famous Japanese moss gardens, and a delightful introduction to 25 common mosses. And the photos are large enough to provide the detail that the reader needs to become familiar with the moss.It’s easy to follow Annie Martin’s step-by-step tutorials on how to design, plant, and care for moss in the garden. Importantly she goes into detail about steps you need to take to determine where moss will grow well in your garden. My husband and I really enjoyed following her suggestions for assessing our yard and were delighted to locate moss that is already growing on our property. I bought the book this winter (I live in Michigan) and using this book we have already started two small gardens in different locations on our property. And we have just begun!
I have always loved the look of moss and now after being inspired by this awesome book I can't wait to get started incorporating moss into my garden. As a master gardener I love trying new things. The internet is full of misinformation on how to get moss growing. I always thought it was a bogus idea blending moss with buttermilk among other things, Annie agrees this is not a way to get moss started. She definitely knows her moss and I love watching her YouTube videos. I was so excited finding out she wrote a book. It's so fun to look for moss and now I know you can plant it any day of the year! I truly adore this book. I love how the author provides me with the confidence that I can grow a moss garden too. With step-by-step instructions and tons of information I can't wait to get started! I also love and appreciate her eco-philosophies as well. I want to own every book Ms. Martin has written.
A thorough book that allows even a beginner gardener to start mossin'. I bought this to start adding a moss component to my shady medicinal garden - I wanted info on how to start actually propagating moss rather than just waiting and hoping it shows up - and Annie Martin's book didn't disappoint. After reading it, I came away excited and ready to jump right in and start moss gardening!
Our lawn is going to moss. It is greener, stays greener all season, than our grass ever did. Helped in identifying the several types of moss growing now and how to spread or multiply its area, and take care of it. Glad we found and read this book. Whenever we asked our "spray and run" lawn service about moss, we just got blank stares and no comment. They would only say that we need to get rid of the moss and sod our lawn (very expensive and requires more "spray and run" chemicals). We have one side yard in 100% moss (very shading there) and it is great. The other side is now in process, but may take a year or so -- kind of letting nature do much of the work.
So bought this book and showed it to my sister, and she took it! Then she showed it to a good friend, and the friend took it! Who knows where my original book went - out to the mossin' yonder. So now I am re-buying the book because it is so delightful to read and a visual paradise - thank you, Mossin' Annie, for a book of wonder! Barbara & George Groome
This is a great primer for moss lawn enthusiasts. Annie Martin's love of moss gardening is evident in her poetic style of writing. As a beginning moss grower I gleaned many useful tips for expanding my moss patches to eventually form a lawn area.
I got this book because I found a small tuff of moss growing on a brick in my weedy garden, It looked like a mini carpet of green so I was interested in learning more. Very educational and I like to attempted to grow a small batch in a glass tank.

I really enjoyed this book. This is my first Afrocentric homeopathic healing book. I usually read websites and books about medicinal herbal remedies. I garden. I eat a mostly plant based diet. I am a black woman. I do yoga. Etc. So, some of the information in the book I’ve heard about in passing. Without this book I wouldn’t have the courage to incorporate many of the author’s suggestions into my life. The suggestions would just get filed in the back of my mind like, “yeah, I should add Epsom salts to my bath or drops of lavender oilâ€.I must admit that some of this book was a bit of a joke to me. I understand that everyone comes from differing educational backgrounds and lifestyles but I found it surprising for women to lack knowledge of their monthly menstrual cycle. I was also almost offended by one or two statements in the book about history… but hey, facts are facts and just because I am ‘over’ history doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.What I didn’t really love was the ritualistic nature of the entire book. I can’t imagine doing all that the author suggests. I don’t think I could go to work if I followed her guidelines. I added post its after post its to the book. There are so many teas, food ideas, relaxation ideas, suggested healing remedies (for ailments I don’t even have! LOL) that I know this book is invaluable. What I finally realized is that, like Christianity and segments of the Bible—this book is like a full manual to a lifestyle and (somewhat?) religious way of thinking. When I first opened the book I had no idea what the Khamit/Khamitic ways of thinking had to do with self-healing. By the end of the book I found myself carefully reading those sections. They are interesting.I am not a regular churchgoer, but I fully believe in a higher power and accept his/her guidance in my life. Queen Afua’s higher power has multiple parts- Maat, Het-Hru, Nefer Atum, Heru, and Tehuti. This might bother a reader that comes from another religious tradition. It doesn’t bother me because I recognize that religion is a choice and the assumption of Christian belief that many American’s have is often just blind acceptance of a forced culture. Few examine their faith. I respect Queen Afua’s examination and explanation of how the tenets of her faith can lead to a womens’ self-healing. I wish other traditions did so. Many in the United States, as it is a supposed Christian nation, could benefit from such an examination instead of blind dependence on medical doctors, pills, and the health care system as our gods.I understand that this book is meant to be an all inclusive guide but… I just don’t think I am on a path to becoming a sacred woman as laid out by Queen Afua. My final thought was… “this is so much work…†I am open to introspection, self-care, self-healing, and meditation but not exactly ready to set up my own altar… but I thought about it… hard.
This book is great I followed most except the alter because I just don't believe in that. I did the journey with a friend and for the last four years, I have enjoyed following the teaching I learned in heal thyself and sacred woman journey. Life no longer passes or controls me but I live and control my life, destiny, health and wombS.A.A
So happy I found the paperback, I purchased the Kindle version a year agi but it's so much better to have a copy in my hands. Let the healing begin. (Again.)So here's what happened. I started the journey in gate one and from my experience it is extremely transformative. Things began to be revealed to me about myself which is truly amazing. I started in gate 0 and technically I'm still there. Not sure if this is ok but this is where I am.Anyways, I was really slow to begin the process because there were items I needed to collect and additional time to find for myself. I have two small children and I'm building my business so finding the time and energy to do things is difficult however the time I did have I used. My sacred baths we're at night or anytime I could manage. I did things to work within my schedule because I needed the healing.It's a challenge for time but whatever time I make for myself I'm always thinking, "I should have done this sooner." This healing book reminds me to care for myself when things get busy. It may take me longer to complete this, with my current responsibilities. So anyone out there wondering where the time is or you have small children and a career to manage, just do what you can when you can, it's ok. I purchased the paperback to remind me to keep going. I started started gate one but I wasn't quite ready yet. I feel the need to continue in gate 0. Anyways so far this book has been really helpful and life changing for me even the little I have read. (I skim thru the chapters from time to time for information)Also, I don't sense that staying in a gate too long is problematic but if anyone out there knows it's a hazard let me know.Hopefully this helps someone.
This is not a read through book. It requires deep thinking and a lot of spiritual work. I found myself having dreams of things that I missed from doing the work. The womb really speaks, you just have to be open to listening and being present to the information that she gives you.
The women in my family; young and old have benefited from this book. Using the recipes, meditation techniques and so on. I have seen first hand the improvements. Thank you Queen Afua.

It also helps get your way of eating together. It is an overall transformation of mind, body and soul. I absolutely love this book and the wisdom offered inside of it.
This book is deep. It's it's filled with so much information I almost felt overwhelmed. But I figured I shouldn't because I don't have to convert to these changes overnight, I can just do it at my own pace. So don't feel overwhelmed when reading this book, go with your own pace and make the alterations gradually or commit to changing only the things you feel you need to change.
I am currently taking sacred woman in the making classes by Queen Afua in BK, NY. She is teaching my sacred sisters and I how to heal with the inner and outer elements of air, water, fire and earth. She is a wonderful teacher and visionary. She has many plans for us in 2017.

This book is funny, sexy, and will keep you entertained and needing a cold glass of water!
Anna’s heard the rumours about Nick, but when she sees him through her bedroom window, she knows she shouldn’t watch, but she can’t help it, he’s her dad’s best friend, but he makes her feel things.When her dad suggest that she helps Nick around the house and with his kids, Anna quickly agrees. The more he sees Anna, the more Nick tries to fight the chemistry they have, she’s he’s best friend’s daughter, but as much as he tries the chemistry wins, even though Anna is terrified with the rumours about Nick’s Anaconda, they can’t fight it, but decide to keep it to themselves.With them not being able to keep their hands of each other, and it’s getting harder to keep what they have from her father, Nick decides on a trip away for Anna and his kids, only problem, Anna’s father invited himself and keeping things hidden got a lot harder.
Let's talk about what a hot little read this book is. It has all the steam with a touch of the forbidden fruit. I mean, if you thought sleeping with your brothers best friend, what do you do when it is your dads best friend? I enjoyed this book. It was a short, hot read that was well written. It had just enough deprecating humor to keep the story from being too cheesy. if you love short,sweet with a happy ending, this is the read for you.
This story was good but not as funny as I thought it was going to be. The fact that the series is called Awkward Love in addition to the funny blurb, made me expect more. It started out great and funny but, very quickly, there were no longer any funny parts and it just became a regular romance. Rating it based just on that, and taking out the expectation of it being funny for more than just the beginning, it was a decent read. I will try the next book in the series and see if it's any better.1 star = awful! want my money back!2 stars = bad but not horrendous3 stars = decent\good4 stars = really good! will probably read again.5 stars = excellent! definitely recommend and will definitely read again!
This was my first book from this author. I was a little disappointed with the book, the story line was ok but felt rushed. The conversation between Anna and Nick drove me crazy because it was written as they were either mumbling, murmuring or they mumbled / murmured.I have started reading another book in this series and although I'm only 20% in I see a huge improvement and I'm really enjoying it.
Missy know how to write witty, steamy and quirky books. This book started out great. I was loving where the story line was going with Nick and Anna, but at times I was not able to connect with the characters. I felt some moments were rushed. So if you are looking for a cute and steamy quick read this is the book for you.Nick and Anna had great chemistry, and it was definitely worth the read to know how things were going to turn out for them. Especially as they had to hide their relationship in the beginning from her father.
The snippet I read on-line was hilarious so I downloaded the sample first to get a better feel. It starts out pretty amusing and interesting but there isn't much depth to the story. If you are looking for a quick, fun and dirty beach read then this book might be what you're looking for. If your looking for a good story with steamy love scenes then you may want to pass.
It's Complicated is the first Missy Johnson book for me. It was cute and awkwardly funny. The plot leaned towards the silly side but it was a fun, light and oh so steamy read which I finished very quickly. I actually stumbled across a blurb for one of her future releases which led me to this one. I'm certainly glad it did as I look forward to reading more from this author.
