Surely one of the most perplexing phrases in the Gospels is Jesus' repeated reference to himself as "Son of Man." Let's face it, for most biblical scholars, the term is simply an embarrassment, and they work hard to explain it away. Inconsistent statements such as saying that Jesus is fully human as well as fully divine are used to try to explain it. Or, attempts are made to show that "Son of man" is some divine title. In both the ancient and modern church, the phrase is basically non-existent in hymns, prayers, and liturgies. Wink researches all the references to the son of man he could locate: in the Old Testament, the New Testament, and in Hebrew literature. For example, he shows that the capitalization of "Son of Man" was added by the translators, to give the impression that "Son of Man" is a title. In fact, there is no capitalization at all in the Hebrew or Greek texts of the bible. In fact, "son of" is a Hebrew idiom (usually appearing as "ben `adam") that means "member of a class," and Wink pulls many examples from the bible itself, examples that would not be obvious unless you return to the Hebrew text (or a literal translation, because the idioms are not translated as "son of," but as "member of," or the translation simply drops "son of " and just leaves the group name.) One example is in Genesis 18:7, which for example NIV translates as "Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf ..." but Young's Literal Translation is "and Abraham ran unto the herd, and taketh a son of the herd, ..." The exception to this translation of "son of," Wink points out, is when Jesus refers to himself as "son of man." Here, the translators don't appear to be willing to have Jesus call himself a man, so the leave the strange-sounding phrase "Son of Man," and capitalize it to boot. Wink has a knack for seeing through the fog of Christology and all the baggage that his been built around Jesus by the translators and theologians. Wink explores carefully the historical meaning of Son of Man in Jewish literature. Then he analyses the curious and unique use of Son of Man in Gospel ("bar enash" in Aramaic, which appears as "ho huios tou anthropou" in the Greek NT sources): that nobody else uses this term in the New Testament except Jesus himself, and that it really doesn't mean "I" since among other things Jesus frequently uses "I," and could have used that if he wanted to. Wink's essential conclusion that Jesus' repeated use of "son of man" is to deliberately emphasize that he is human. Jesus was not claiming to be divine, not calling us to worship him, but calling us to be human, and that is our highest calling. Wink makes the profound observation that Jesus never appealed to God's authority for anything he said or did, and yet divine authority clearly shines through his words and deeds. Wink's interpretation of Jesus' message is not that being "human" is bad, but that our failure is that we are rarely human at all; that we act selfishly, without thinking, without consideration, without reverence for God. It is a compelling interpretation, well analyzed and defended. Wink shows that is the most consistent with what is found in the Gospels. This interpretation will for many people hard to accept. It is one thing to have Jesus come down from high, to be worshipped, with a huge chasm between him and us. It is another to realize that Jesus was, in fact fully human while we most of us are barely so, and that he tried with all his might to show those around him the way to the Kingdom of God, and that is our calling not to worship Jesus but to share his understanding and worship of God.
This is a temporary rating. I am finding it slow going and I am really impressed by other studies of Biblical and early Christian literature by the author. I will have to return to this review when I have finished the book.
This is a dense academic book. Wink seems to be writing for serious Bible scholars here. Not nearly as easy to read as his powerful book: The Powers that Be. Though not an easy read it a challenging one for my Faith andd Practice.

"The Human Being", the great biblical scholar Walter Wink's unprecedented and compellingly creative work on Jesus, contains the most definitive statement on who Jesus was and what Jesus expected of anyone who wished to live a fully human life. Believing that it is exceedingly wise to take seriously what Jesus called himself, and using detailed biblical analysis and the earliest known Greek manuscripts of the New Testament, Wink focuses on the phrase that Jesus used as a self-describing name, a phrase that biblical scholarship ignored for 2000 years. It is a phrase that only Jesus used to call himself, and he used it some 53 different times, virtually his only form of self-identification, and no one else ever uses the phrase in reference to him. That phrase is "the son of the man", and it was not ever capitalized, meaning that it was not an honorific or special status title, or any claim to be something any other human could not be. It was seen by translators as so awkward a phrase that no one ever translated it without removing the second use of the article "the" in the phrase, and Wink demonstrates why that was a mistake. Wink details what this phrase means and where it comes from and why Jesus used it, while noting that its literal translation is "the human being". After four years of seminary and 35 years of continuing education classes and sermons with all their needed research, this book taught me more about Jesus than anything else I had ever read or heard or seen. If forced to have only one book in my library this is the book I would choose--it rates 100 stars, not just 5. It is without doubt, in my opinion, the best book ever written about Jesus, even though it is not an easy read. It will challenge any reader to rethink the authentic Jesus, what his message truly is, and what it can mean for seeking to live as an authentic human being. I recommend it as highly as I could ever recommend any book to anyone.

I always like having a paperback guide with me when I travel, something to use as a base while I'm wandering; usually I go with Lonely Planet, but LP is free with Kindle Unlimited, so I decided to try Fodor's this time around. However, I've found this one to be kind of sparse for a guidebook several hundred pages long. It feels as if its target audience is staying in Central and spending money on higher end restaurants and activities; much of what exists outside of that is relegated merely to a mention, if that. Further, the maps are inconvenient at best and useless at worst, both because they are usually scattered across several pages and, more importantly, missing most of the street names. Perhaps the assumption is that Hong Kong has readily available WiFi, but the widespread WiFi is available through CSL and limited, generally, to 30 minutes daily; free WiFi is available for visitors, but not if you pick up a local SIM card, which is not just useful but necessary for some people (e.g., I'm visiting family and need to be able to contact them).If you're like me and prefer a print copy, this guide is OK, but not much better than the much slimmer DK guide. I'd try another one.
Good travel guide but not excellent. The information was helpful but a bit scattered. I had to look back and forth on different pages to find out where points of interests were and how to get to them. The book is excellent if you already knew the layout of Hong Kong. Overall, it's a decent book if you want basic information to help you research further.
I used this for the Macau portion, and cannot comment on the rest. The recommendations were good. I think this guide is better than the Lonely Planet's guide for Macau (which i also bought and used for the same trip). Maps are completely inadequate though. Lonely Planet's maps were a little better but also lacking.
Easy to navigate, concise and the maps helped a great deal, as did the recommendations. Don't recall the price, but probably affordable, as I don't "overpay!"
Whenever we travel I always get one of these! It helps to plan what to see and where to eat
Overall a nice summary of Hong Kong's main attractions. But nothing very new or special.
save your money and buy the hard copy. This book is difficult to navigate.

The sixth edition of this book is a great book for anyone taking Plant taxonomy at an upper division college level. It goes over basic plant morphology, and an overview of plant evolution. It covers numerous plant families and devotes two pages to most, the larger such as Asteraceae has 12 pages with floral formulas. This book has gone through several editions with different authors, the sixth edition has cleared up much of the disorganization from previous edition, but there are still a number of mistakes in the index, directing you to the wrong page. Do not get earlier editions as they do not have current classifications although this edition does need updating. I wish I had this book when I had taken plant taxonomy. This is a not a field guide and is not for those just learning botany. Once again, do not buy earlier editions unless very cheap.
Poor quality paper and binding, it's well written but VERY poorly organized. I'm glad I have it as a reference but I wish that a better text would have been required for the class.
The book came a bit torn up, parts of it are falling out. The pages are perforated inside so they just come loose. Has amazing content, I learned so much using this book in class. it goes very in depth into plant anatomy and how the various families differ. Worth dealing with the pages falling everywhere.

Is the difference between the 5th Edition and the 6th worth the $100 the 6th Edition costs vs. the $6 for a used copy of the 5th Edition? I needed the 6th Edition for a class but bought a copy of the 5th Edition instead. Comparing it to a library copy of the newer edition I'd say there are maybe a total of 5-7 pages worth of new text, and a total of 4 new exercise questions in the entire text. So if you need this for a class but have access to a copy you can borrow of the current edition, save you $$$ and get the older edition. You can easily read or make photo copies (I think a few pages out of a several hundred page text would be considered "fair use") of the pages that have been added to the newest edition.

It takes the patience of a saint to read this, especially for an old reader. The small light type on super shiny paper is hard to read, even with a magnifying glass. Because of this impediment, I can't comment on the content I can't read. The paper facilitates lovey reproductions of the art work. However, I was looking for more on a theory of contemporary beauty as portrayed through advertising and commercial media.
A beautiful book. I misplaced mine (loaned it to someone? or it's someplace where it will show up? or?) and so missed having it around to just pick up and peruse from time to time that I replaced it with this used copy in like-new condition. I don't do that often and is probably the strongest evidence I can offer of the pull of this volume. I also own Eco's companion book on Ugliness -- purchased many years after the first HoB. Hope I don't lose it, because I enjoy having it, too, but would be less compelled to replace it. Besides the visuals, Eco's text is a pleasure.

The book receives five stars for the selection of very good color reproduction. The text as many others have pointed out is ponderous. Before buying the book have a look at amazon's own review of this book. They for instance note that only half of the book is written by Eco.The book is a fairly irreverent description of beauty. The book is really a description of female beauty in the western world through the centuries. I find the pictures and the text elaborating on the pictures interesting. The other part of the text is too tedious for my taste. I an not particularly interested in reading lengthy sections of other people's writing that the author considers important.Eco has also written The Infinity of Lists: An Illustrated Essay in the same series. That book is actually rather impossible to understand (two stars), but it also has beautiful pictures.The current book is worth four stars; barely.
A well written and interesting book but you had better have very good eyes. The largest text is about 1/16 inch high but some is even smaller this, both sizes are used throughout the book, (perhaps 12 and 10 point). Not easy to read, especially in the (extensive) sections where its colored light blue. What would have possessed anyone to do this i have no idea, though I am referring to the paper back version, maybe the hard cover is a larger format.
Only Umberto Eco could write a book that defines beauty through the ages of western culture as this one does. He looks at the great contemporary writers for insight into the great contemprary artists. Umberto brings Plato to the front to explain early Greek art, and brings in Hume to explain humanist style. It is a classical book that should be used in colleges to not only introduce people to art but to thinking about art and words. The color plates are wonderful. What I wish is that the Italian CDrom was available in English. One can see from the style used that this book was a great interactive CDrom.Reading Umberto's insights and looking at great art..what a wonderful way to spend a morning at starbucks!
This is a beautifully bound book, even next to its original hard cover release. It's nice and compact without compromising the quality of the photographs. Even though I got this for research purposes, I've decided not to mark the pages with my notes so that I can have this sit on my coffee table. A must for all Eco fans !
