I have been a fan of Sasha Cohen ever since I first saw her skate a number of years ago. Even at a young age, she clearly stood out from the pack with her artistry and intensity on the ice. She is truly a beautiful skater. So, I looked forward to reading her autobiography.Written as a first person narrative, the book is somewhat banal, at times, lacking any real depth or insight. Nevertheless, the book will hold the interest of those who are fans of Sasha Cohen, as well as those with an avid interest in figure skating. In her book, Sasha Cohen lets the reader know how it was that she became a skater. She discusses what she had to do to get to where she is today. She also includes a number of tantalizing tidbits about the skating world. The book is peppered with many photographs of Sasha Cohen, in both black and white and color. This is definitely a book that her fans will enjoy, and it is a quick and easy read. It would make a lovely gift for a young girl or teenager with an interest in figure skating.

my wife has loved figure skating since the age of 5 - loves everything about it. She liked the book - actually she likes every book about figure skating.

Regrettably, a lasting message from this book is that Alexandra was a spoiled and indulged young lady whose parents doted on her chosen path of development and could well afford to do so. She was of the chosen few who are very well supported in their climb to success. That being said, the book is well done by Alexandra/Sasha and gives a glimpse and understanding into her life and growth, which is what an autobiography is supposed to do.The book is interesting and well done. I recommend it for people of all ages and genders. It is inspirational, but is more of a "fairy tale" and "wishful" for those whose background is not so fortunate. It also gives insight to the cost of such an endeavor.I believe Sasha is the most beautiful and vibrant skater I have ever seen skate. Even in real life and up close, such is the case. She made the winter olympics great! Truly Sasha is, as "New Yorker" put it, a "National Treasure." However, we are reviewing the book here, not Sasha.

The first edition of this book was printed before Sasha's 2006 Olympic Silver medal win. We learn about how her love for skating was ignited as well as how she started out as a gymnast. A lot of her gymnast qualities translated into her abilities on the ice, namely her flexibility and beautiful attention to detail. We learn about her comeback from a potentially career ending back injury as well as a few difficult defeats. While the book was interesting, it didn't feel very gritty or emotional. Sasha's career can pretty much be culminated as a big "what if". We never really see her mention what gets in her head that leads to her settling for any other place but first. While she is a strong short program skater, her long programs have always been her Achilles heel. She usually botches a jump which has cost her two Olympic Gold medals and two World Championship titles. We won't even mention the Nationals gold medals she let pass her by. She is my favorite figure skater of all time, but this book pretty much ignored the elephant in the room. Basically, it's nice back story, but superficial at best.

I read the old edition of Sasha Cohen's autobiography that did not include her experiences at the 2006 Winter Olympics. This new release, obviously, pays tribute to Sasha's time in Turin and gives readers an updated version of this young woman's life story.I did not watch Sasha when she was 17 years old and performing in the 2002 Olympic Games, but when I saw she was returning to the 2006 Games as a favorite to win the gold, I felt inclined to tune in. Sasha Cohen is far and away one of the most graceful and beautiful skaters I have ever come across, and it is genuinely a shame that things did not work out for her in Turin. I feel for her, because she is such a precise ice skater who clearly has all the necessary skills to be an Olympic gold medalist, but as we all know, you just never know what can happen out there. But this young lady coped with it about as well as anyone possibly could. She could have easily pouted and bawled her eyes out after winning the silver medal, but she kept that humble smile and classy attitude all the way through. And judging from everything I've heard about her very different attitude four years ago, I'd have to say that she has transformed into a true American--someone we can respect even more than a person who just sports a gold medal around their neck. So anyone who criticizes Sasha and focuses on the negativity should see that she is arguably one of the greatest class acts her sport has seen in this country.I wish Sasha all the best in her future and hope that she will consider training for the 2010 Games. No matter what choice she makes, though, I hope people will remember her for the beautiful skater that she really is. Fans will enjoy reading this autobiography, although I do agree with another reviewer here in that it does lack depth and insight. It is clearly geared mostly for young kids, so of course Sasha is not going to go into great detail on most things. Yes, it's fluffy, but that clearly isn't what was intended to be written. We all know that there was more to her disappointing finish at the 2002 Olympics than just being "happy to have been there." We know she was more upset than that, but when you think about it this wasn't really the place for her to go into that. Not with a book geared for younger kids. Most teenage Olympic athletes write their autobiographies with a simple voice, not choosing to go too deep. The book does, however, help readers see how Cohen got started and evolved as an athlete, and with this newly revised edition it is a nice reminder of Sasha's Olympic success.

tl;dr: buy this book if you're interested in the underlying principles of low-level programming. If you just want to learn some C and assembly, there are plenty of free tutorials online. The book is probably too terse for absolute novice programmers but is a delight for those with some experience who seek to learn basic concepts of low-level programming while systematizing their gut feelings of programming patterns and good practices into a coherent view. There are books on programming that are best used as references, standing on one's desk and waiting for its owner to forget a name of a handy function. Then there are books that seek to land their readers a job by providing the minimal knowledge required to pass a programming iterview and do some productive programming, learning the missing pieces later in the field. And then there are books that outline the underlying principles on which programming is built. The present book is of the latter kind. That isn't to say the book can't be used to land a job. The presented examples and topics are not merely for academic pondering but practical enough for a reader to be able to apply the acquired knowledge in the field. However, if one just wants to start writing assembly and C, this book is probably an overkill. It doesn't hold one's hand and requires much more effort from the reader than necessary to start producing working code, so if one's goal is to be able to read and write some C, online tutorials would probably be a better place to start.Who is this book for, then? Well, one of its major focus is on good practices, so if one is somewhat experienced in programming, the book can help to solidify the intuitive understanding of how to write. The other focus is on the underlying principles of low-level programming: many connections to other branches of computer science are provided, putting low-level programming into a broader perspective, which results in better programs. For example, one doesn't exactly need to know about finite-state machines, but structuring an assembly program to resemble this concept helps significantly to produce listings that are easy to read and debug. Exposure to other models of computation doesn't have any immediate benefits, but if one familiarize themselves with Forth (an interpreter of which the book suggests to write), they are bound to use some little tricks inspired by it from time to time. How does knowing about parsing of formal languages help with low-level programming if one doesn't expect to write compilers? Well, it makes compiler messages more intuitive. And so on; I suggest that you look at the table of contents, available freely by clicking on the book cover, and observe the sheer breadth of the covered material.Of course, the book isn't limited to things that are only marginally connected to low-level programming. The programming itself is described definitively, with many helpful examples, assignments, and useful asides which warn about important caveats. I was sold the moment I saw a warning about a names of sections in assembly not being case-insensitive, because first, I've once spent an evening fighting with a mysterious segfault because of this, and second, I haven't seen a similar warning in any other resources. The book is good; however, I still believe that its greatest strength is in acquainting readers with indirectly related concepts, and reading it solely for the sake of learning how to write C isn't practical as there are many easily googlable free resources providing the means to acquire this skill. With all that said, I still believe that even though exposure to many different topics indirectly connected to low-level programming makes one a better programmer, beginners would be overwhelmed by the amount of content they have to absorb in addition to learning the basic concepts.Summary:+ Breadth+ Depth+ Interesting examples and assignments+ Caveats+ Instructions for tooling (often discarded in other books)- The book is quite terse (the consequence of being deep and broad)- The language in which the book is written is sometimes weird due to the Russian origin (for example, 'loop' is 'цикл' in Russian which is incorrectly translated as 'cycle' in some places, but 'loop' isn't even nearly the same as 'cycle'')DISCLOSURE: I'm personally acquainted with the author and have read the book before it went to print. However, I'm not currently one of his students and so will not receive good grades for this review.

Very well written book on Intel 64 architecture and programming using both Assembly language and C. Clear instructions, numerous code samples compilable from the first try and many assignment forcing the reader to apply his newly acquired knowledge to writing useful and quite complicated code from scratch. The chapters on using C and Assembly in ensemble are especially valuable. There are many good books about C but this one is the best I've seen so far on Assembly and its productive use with C.

Good information but presentation is a bit awkward. For example, each chapter heading includes the author's name and city. Language is also a bit stilted. But if you can get beyond those aspects, the information contained in the book is useful.

This book is about assembly language, mostly about C, and how to make them work together. What is written is written well, especially the first (assembly) part is good. It is truly engaging though I think the pace is too fast and the final problem (writing Forth interpreter) adds more noise than signal to overall content (just count it -- you are supposed to learn asm, low-level C, and Forth -- in my opinion it is too much) -- anyway, I immediately felt nostalgic about the times I wrote code in 6502 and 68K asm.Let me list all the drawbacks I noticed. The minor ones are the format of the book (taller, and narrower than usual) and persistently printing copyright notice over the pages. I don't know where APress is heading with it but I see it again and I am really tired of this. What next -- "you wouldn't steal a car..." warning? The big one starts with author's statement that there is no point in duplicating info about assembly language because everybody can check Intel spec. As the effect you get as little info as possible in a book about assembly. This decision made me really angry -- I paid for the printed book just to be reminded about existence of the internet? Now I have to switch constantly between book and computer monitor -- yeah, new dimension of comfortable reading. But what really broke the straw was page 127 -- beginning of the C part. Author included just a little info about asm because there is one spec available ("Many books try to include exhaustive information about instruction set. it gets outdated quite soon; moreover, it BLOATS the book unnecessarily.", upper case is from me)? Hear this -- there is entire C tutorial included, 140 pages long, even with programming style tips. It is probably because there is no other book about C on the planet, and K&R is about to be written yet. Yes, I am buying this reasoning, sure.Author also included such rare gems as description of regular expressions and finite state machines. But asm... oh big no-no, there is Intel spec already, every line of duplication is a crime ("There is no virtue in copying the instruction descriptions from the “original” place they appear in; it is much more mature to learn to work with the source.") Why a reader cannot work with the sources about regexes or grammars? As for wasting space I was also not happy seeing questions supposed to help me learn -- I read books because I am curious, to learn more, so my mind is already set on asking. I think it is more valuable to provide information than to ask and ask (because I am already doing that). "What does instruction xor rdi, rdi do" -- is it really valuable? There are 423 questions in total and I think they are geared more to make this book a textbook (making life easier for lazy lecturer) than to truly help any self-taught reader. It is not the book is not useful, far from it, author relies solely on open-source tools, I have learned about Intel asm (and Forth), part 3 (C+asm) showed me new low-level details. But despite all those good things this book is too heavily ill-balanced to get a higher score. The second edition will be good with the second part completely removed, or really great with expanded part one at the expense of removing part two. Until then we have to live with the average.

This is a great book for learning low level programming. Although, I am C++ programmer, I learned so much from it. Really get it and you won't be disappointed!

Detailed and broad in scope and coverage. However where is the editor? the author is not a native english speaker and it shows! There’s many grammatical errors that are common among slavic speakers (such as leaving out articles like ‘a’ or ‘the’).Great book, but the editor was either lazy or asleep!

Absolutely fantastic, a fantastic coverage of low level programming with C and x64, it's hard to find a decent tutorial these days that covers a working/modern version of assembly so this was a breath of fresh air. Kudos to the author.

This book provides the foundation of most of the languages. Assembly, Forth, C and their many useful references. Well done!

All of the projects in this book are right up my alley! None are too involved or too time consuming and all turn out beautifully! I have tried the seed packets for a seed swap I entered. Total success! Also the natural dye chapter using plants found in nature! There are projects for outdoors such as the suet feeder and various gardening accessories. Then, there are plenty of gift ideas and projects for using nature in your home. Being a foraging junky, (I love to look for wild edibles) I know I will enjoy foraging for wild craft supplies too. I can assure you that if you love to craft, you will love this book!

This is a great book for adults and children. Lots of fun ideas with good instructions. The projects are all easily doable and I’m looking forward to getting started on my favorites.

Love this book!! Totally doable projects that all tie into eachother. Great photos and instructions!

I picked this up at my local bookstore and had to leave a review here too! This is such a great book for all levels. I'm no experienced DIYer but I loved the pictures to follow. Each step has a picture and lots of instruction. SO many different projects! Highly recommend!

This book is absolutely loaded with pretty and creative garden ideas. Everything from creating wood etched garden signs, naturally dyeing yarn with plants, to natural beauty recipes. I like how each project shows each step with quite a few photos too – between 4-12. I’m a very visual person and learn best when I can see how something is done in detail. Happily recommend this book for those interesting in natural garden and home crafts using herbs, flowers, leaves, and other garden harvests.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Exclusive: A Q&A with Author Gary D. Schmidt Q: Did you always want to become a writer? A: Nope. In high school, I wanted to go to the Naval Academy at Annapolis and become a career naval officer. Then, late in high school, I wanted to be a vet—mostly because of the James Herriot books and the PBS show, I suppose. Then, in college, I decided to become a lawyer—until my senior year, when I switched to an English major to become a teacher, which I did become. Somehow becoming a writer happened along the way. Q: What did you read when you were a kid? A: In my school, we were tracked—meaning that we were put into classes depending on how well we had done in testing. This happened in first grade. I had tested poorly and ended up in the pumpkin group—no kidding. We were the poorest readers, and so since I was told I wasn’t any good at this, I didn’t read much. Then I got taken up by Miss Kabakoff, who just liked me, and who brought me into her class and taught me how to read. Once that happened, I read everything I could. The Freddy the Pig books, the Doctor Dolittle books, any Greek mythology I could get my hands on, and the Norse mythology that I liked better, the biographies in the Childhood of Famous Americans series, the tales of the Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Andersen, the Herbert series and the Henry Reed series, Robinson Crusoe and The Swiss Family Robinson, Howard Pyle’s The Adventures of Robin Hood and His Merry Men, Bambi (which is a lot better than most people think it is), anything by Jack London or Jules Verne or H. G. Wells, the Horatio Hornblower books, Treasure Island, and of course the Hardy Boys series and the Tom Swift series, which I collected whenever I could. Q: How often do you write? A: Every day I am not teaching—so two or three days a week, and sometimes at night—unless it’s really cold out and the woodstove needs a lot of tending. Q: How much do you write each day? A: I work on three projects at a time, and they are all at different stages. One may be a first draft, one may be almost finished, and one might be in proofs—or perhaps just being conceived. I try to write about five hundred words a day on each project. Most American writers—Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, Jack London—all wrote about five hundred words a day. It seems the right pace for me. It keeps me from going too fast at a project. There are some children’s book writers—like Enid Blyton—who supposedly wrote ten thousand words a day. This seems impossible to me, but even if it is true, one should not judge oneself by the absurd outlier. Q:Where do you write? A: I have a study in a small outbuilding away from the house. It has a desk, a lamp, more books than should be in any one room, and a woodstove. I work at a typewriter, and keep lots of scrap paper around me. This means, by the way, that if anything comes out pretty awful, I can just open the woodstove and burn it all. The feeling of relief is remarkable. On my desk are a dictionary and a thesaurus, books by Emerson and Whittier and Longfellow and Darwin, Henry David Thoreau’s journals, a collection of Churchill’s war speeches, two volumes of Shaker hymns, some Tolkien, some Avi, some Katherine Paterson, some Elie Wiesel, The Giver, and a statue of a greyhound that has been in my family for four generations. Q:You work at a typewriter? A: You can’t believe how hard it is to find typewriter ribbons for a 1953 Royal. Q: Your books often are very serious. Shouldn’t you lighten up? A: You think life in middle school isn’t serious? Are you kidding? Living is a serious business. Funny is good, of course. We all like to laugh. But I want more than that. Much more. Nathaniel Hawthorne, in his first great book, called life "a veil of gloom and brightness." We all wish it could be brightness all the time. And maybe for some people it is. I doubt it, but maybe. But there is gloom for us all, too. And maybe books even for kids shouldn’t ignore that. Geez, read Where the Wild Things Are, or Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, or just about any Grimm folktale, or Crow Boy, or Bridge to Terabithia, or Nothing but the Truth, or No, David, or Octavian Nothing, or The Tale of Despereaux, or Stitches, or The Storm in the Barn, and then try to tell me that writers for kids should try not to be too serious. Q: What is your favorite book that you have written? A: Hmmm... If I give one title, then all the other books get sort of cranky and jealous, and they start to rearrange themselves loudly at night to push each other off the shelves. Then I have to pick them all up in the morning instead of walking the dogs and then the dogs get irritated and they take their sweet time on the walk so I get back home late and miss most of breakfast and the kids get to school after the bell has rung and the day just goes downhill from there. Let’s just say they’re all my favorites. Q:What is your favorite book that you have not written? A: An easy question. It is The Little World of Don Camillo. There is no other book like it, so sweet, so funny, so moving, sometimes suspenseful. I wish I had written it. Q:What book are you working on now? A: Sorry. Writers should never talk about what they’re working on next. It will be done when it’s done, and then I’ll be glad to talk about it. But not now.

"This is Schmidt's best novel yet—darker than The Wednesday Wars and written with more restraint, but with the same expert attention to voice, character and big ideas."—Kirkus Reviews, starred review"Reproductions of Audubon plates introduce each chapter in this stealthily powerful, unexpectedly affirming story of discovering and rescuing one’s best self, despite family pressure to do otherwise."—Booklist, starred review"Readers will miss Doug and his world when they’re done, and will feel richer for having experienced his engaging, tough, and endearing story."—School Library Journal, starred review "The book is exceptionally well written. Schmidt creates characters that will remain with the reader long after the book is done. Doug’s voice is unforgettable as he tries to help and protect his mom. . . .While there is much stacked against him, he is a character filled with hope that the reader cannot help but root for. Push this one on readers; they will not be sorry. . . .Schmidt writes a journal-type story with a sharp attention to detail, patterns in the story line, and an unexpected twist at the end."–VOYA A National Book Award Nominee

I loved this book too. Usually companion books to the original story, in this case The Wednesday Wars, are not as good or even horrible. Also a National Book Finalist like the original, this book stood on its own as a great novel. There is less emphasis on literature but Jane Eyre is brought into the story as well as art/drawing, science and geography. It is set in the 1968-1969 in the era of the Vietnam War and the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. The main character Doug, moves with his very poor family from NYC to a small town so his drunk abusive father can find work. Starting out as an outcast due to his family's financial situation and his brother and father's criminal reputation, Doug is taken under the wing of a few citizens of Maryville like the town librarian, his science teacher, and the grocer's daughter who see him as his own person, a good person with talents and intelligence that no one has tried to nurture and grow until now. They help him get through the abuse and neglect he has to endure as well the town suspicion of his family for the store robberies occurring around town and his older brother coming home from the war with life-changing physical and mental injuries. This was also written as a children's book but as an adult I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

I am 40+ and enjoy a broad spectrum of genres in literature. I find however, that when I want a good fiction book to escape with, many adult books seem to lack a certain essence of insight and enrichment that I do find in many stories written for teens.I am amazed at Gary Schmidt's talent to create very different stories to present a variety of life's hardships candidly, without any sugar coating, and yet finds a way to show the reader some sweetness and hope through life's challenges. I loved Wednesday Wars and consider it one of my favorite books in a list of my top ten or so. This has definitely been added to that list! I found it to be cathartic, as someone who grew up with an unstable and abusive parent.I cannot recommend Schmidt's Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy enough either, totally different type of story again, but your life will be better for reading it.Also if you find these stories enriching a couple from other authors I recommend are: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - a must!!! Tangerine and a Plague Year by Edward Bloor, and The fault in Our Stars by John Green, I could name a bunch of others.

If you likes The Wednesday Wars you will love Okay for Now. Anybody can read this and enjoy it. It is a book about a kid named Doug who is trying to adjust to a new life in a new town, without any of his friends. You also learn about Doug’s tough home life, he has troubles with his father and his brother. All while he is missing his oldest brother who is out at war. Thankfully there are new people that Doug meets in the new town that expect the best of him. They empower him, and he empowers them. One of my favorite parts of the book is how he relates his life to the art he draws.

“Okay for Now” captured my attention on the first page and I found it hard to put down. It’s a story of a teenage boy struggling to survive in a very dysfunctional family, in a new area where he knows no one, and in a new school. Despite numerous setbacks, he perseveres and makes positive life changes. The story is filled with quirky characters and invaluable lessons about love, life and survival.

I bought this book to read with a book club even though it wasn't a book I would have picked up on my own. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this book is! I loved it and couldn't put it down. I felt like the book presented a difficult time in history and a flawed family with so much hope and honesty. I appreciated that the characters in the book had difficult decisions to make on a daily basis and that the reader got to see the consequences of their poor choices and the good that came when they purposely made good choices. I was worried it would be a bummer to read, but it was so uplifting. I loved it so much I had my husband read it and my 5th grade daughter. They both loved it too. I will definitely be reading other books by this author.

As a former teacher, I found so many similarities between Doug Swieteck and students who -- for various reasons -- fall deep into the cracks of formal education. The trite adage of "it takes a village to raise a child" is raised to its best level when Doug's talents are perceived by an assistant in a sleepy library. Life lessons are taught using John James Audubon's beautiful art as the launch pad for Doug's awakening mind.

I was introduced to the Junior or Young Adult gendre of books only a couple of years ago. When I was a kid we relied on things like "Lassie," "Black Beauty," "The Secret Garden," and the Nancy Drew series. But nothing spoke to the life I was experiencing as a troubled teen. And then I had to read the "Wednesday Wars" for a Sabbath Reading for Pastors program and made the delightful discovery that there is something substantive between "Little House on the Prairie" and Harry Potter. Several months ago I heard an interview with Gary Schmidt on the car radio. He was so interesting and the things he was saying about his newest book were so intriguing that I ordered "Okay for Now" for my Kindle as soon as I got home. This story seems to be about real kids with real problems. When I was young, no one talked about their parents getting divorced or any other kind of family trouble. We kept everything inside and maybe didn't even let our pastor or our favorite teacher know what was eating at us. But books like this one invite a young person to think about what she's going through, maybe talk about it with a friend, maybe even discuss these things in the classroom. How refreshing! And how healthy! My oldest grandchildren are too old for this group of books now, and my youngest are not quite ready, but Grandma will be waiting to grace their Christmas tree with books that were really written for them. The Rev. Judith A. Meier

#69,765 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

If you're this far into the series, you pretty much know what you're going to get at this point (comedic situations where Kogarashi inevitably finds himself surrounded by scantily clad women). While the gags are largely the same as the previous volumes, I found that the diverse situations the characters were put helped this volume stand out.Aside from Oboro showing up at school and causing her typical mess, we also get to see Sagiri's cousin and her amusing and innocent reactions to so many things, a fun Halloween scene where Koyuzu plays tricks on everyone, and a play where Yuuna gets involved. The author also appears to be building up some story elements that could change things up in future volumes. If you've read / liked this series so far, I'd highly recommend you grab this one, too ^_^
