About the Author
David Fasulo has been a member of the American Mountain Guide Association since 1989 and is currently an AMGA-certified single-pitch instructor and New York State licensed guide specializing in self-rescue courses. In 1996 David wrote the first edition of Self-Rescue. The first edition was well received, being used as reference material for a number of technical climbing books and manuals, as well as recommended reading for classes on self-rescue. David is also the author of Rock Climbing Connecticut as well as articles on climbing and sea kayaking. Aside from climbing adventures, David is a full-time educator, certified American Canoe Association sea kayak instructor, certified emergency medical technician, and experienced ocean sailor and racer.

Ive been teaching self rescue for 25 years, this is the first book to take a practical, realistic view on what is possible and what is not. The explanations are better, the pics are better and while these techniques will constantly evolve this book is a must have for all Trad climbers.
Good review but needs greater depth to be useful.

Fast Delivery and the book is great!
The flow of the second edition is better because the decision making process is streamlined. If there is an easy way to do something - use it; if not - go to the more complex method. For me, the skills that are described take some study and a bit of practice to get comfortable with. A great way to spend a rainy day at the crags.
I recently dislocated my shoulder on a multipitch and it took 2.5 hours to finally get cell service, all while my arm was dangling uselessly and painfully by my side. I soon realized that the situation could've been worse had I decked when I fell unexpectedly. Climbing is inherently dangerous and it's very important to know what to do when things go wrong. I'm planning on reading and practicing the techniques during my injury time so that when I return to rock in a couple of months, I will feel much more equipped. I've already started it and it's extremely clear and comprehensive.

I have to agree with another reader on this about the style of this book.The author uses obfuscation to sound sophisticated. This is exactly what is NOT needed! Self rescue should be simple and the basic points explained first. A more systematic approach explained later after the ground work is covered, not first!!. Introducing new jargon that is purely jargon to get a name is of no use. Terms like 'Technical ledge' = Hanging climber (or rope under tension). Why not say 'hanging climber' instead of making it sound like something else. It's a rope for God's sake. Treat it like one!I personally feel the Author has got so wrapped up in naming a concept that the concept is lost in words. I don't believe in explaining something by trying to name it as something new. Just use the current vernacular - it's easier all round!

After having made my first successful batch of dill pickles a few months ago, browsing through this book of nearly innumerable pickling recipes was a fun romp. When author Jennifer MacKenzie says that pickling isn't that hard, she's right--it isn't. Especially not when you have over 250 recipes for traditionally picked and quick-pickled condiments, sauces, and sides in your hands! She's covered everything from lesser-known fruit pickles to classics like chili sauce and corn relish. My favorite section by far, though, is "World Traveler." I had heard of Moroccan preserved lemons and Korean kimchi (they're both delightful), but I hadn't known about Jamaican Banana Ginger Chutney or Indian Spiced Pickled Peaches. More intriguing yet are the recipes for domestic treats like Pickled Milkweed Pods (who knew?) and New Orleans Pickled Mirlitons (I knew chayote squash is sometimes called mirliton, but I didn't know they were ever pickled). And the best part is that even if you don't want to follow through completely with the pickling process, you could still make these chutneys, salsas, and relishes for your next family gathering or everyday meal--zesty, flavorful accompaniments are always welcome at the table. But since Jennifer thoughtfully includes plenty of information up front about techniques and equipment, I'm sure you'll be pickling away in no time. Pickling veggies and fruits is a heckuva tasty way to preserve them--you might want to plant some extra zucchinis and beans in your garden!
This is such a great book for learning how to make many different, flavorful pickles, chutneys, salsas, and other flavor-packed recipes. Some cook book authors have an uncanny ability to over-complicate the technique, which can leave the reader feeling intimidated and confused. Jennifer MacKenzie has written this book in such a way that anyone can learn this old-age art form. Another thing I really like about the book is that not only does she provide weight measurements (e.g. 5 lbs.) in her ingredient lists, but also volume measurements (e.g. 4 quarts or 2 cups). This is extremely helpful. A must buy for pickling novices and masters.
I've used this book as an intro to making both pickles and homemade spaghetti sauce. The instructions are clear and the author has obviously put a lot of time and effort into fine tuning these recipes.
It was a retirement gift for a coworker who loves to make pickles. Only thing, he was making them from another recipe that didn't taste good. So as one of his retirement gifts, I purchased this book. He made several jars and brought some to me. They were so yummy. Ready for him to make more.

Where do I start? I'll start with a positive. This was a brave idea badly let down by poor editing and poor presentation. I had bought this book because I needn't a reliable guide to these forms of music.So why did I give the book away shortly after buying it? Its full of errors. An example would be the entry for Archie Bell & The Drells - This book states that Drell recorded for Ovid; He actually recorded for Ovide. There is no mention of thefact that many of his early records were in fact, recorded using the TSU Tornados, mainly 'cos Archie was away in Vietnam. This may seem minor but the book is littered with other errors. The editor has also taken the easy option whereever possible. Thus we get a long, dull entry for Micheal Jackson, a singer who has made few R&B or Soul records but no entry whatsoever for Donald Height, now an obscure figure but an artist who recorded throughout the sixties until 1975. I'll finish with two further points as I 'm writing this as a warning. There were no pictures in my edition making it hard on the eye and the editor has a quite ridiculous policy of inserting deliberate errors (So he says anyway) to warn people off plagarism. Thus you get part discographies with wrong album information. I'm sorry but if I'm to spend my hard earned money I expect far better than this shoddy exercise in popularism.
The compiler has not axes to grind and seems to treat everyone reasonably and fairly.It is a bit weird to find Jimmy Jam under his first name (ditto L.A. Reid). It would also be a bit handier if mentions of folks who have entries were highlighted in some fashion when they are mentioned elsewhere.A few (doubtlessly accidental) omissions aside it is pretty comprehensive. I'd like to see more coverage of produces and entries discussing styles but of the books of this sort I've bought this is the most useful.

This book contains a concised overview on soft matter physics or what chemists use to call colloid chemistry. As stated by the author in the Preface, it has been written primarily for undergraduate students. However, it should be also useful to researchers that are looking for a unified view of the subject. The book is organized in five chapters: 1) Introduction, 2) Polymers, 3) Colloids, 4) Amphiphiles, and 5) Liquid crystals. Each chapter includes both FURTHER READING and QUESTIONS sections (numerical solutions to the questions are provided at the end of the book). All in all this quasi-pocket book appear to have reached its scope, I think, and hence I rated it with five stars. Readers that want to dig deeper into this subject may consult the book Soft Matter Physics: an Introduction, by Kleman and Lavrentovich (648 pp). Those wishing to take an intermediate step, may consult the recently published book Soft Condensed Matter by Jones (230 pp).

In an incredibly relatable journey that guides you through the process to show up in every opportunity or situation in your life, (in ways what you know you are capable but struggle to overcome self doubt, family stories, or past trauma), this book is about to change the "field of play" for me in many ways.I’d heard about Alter Ego’s before from Todd Herman, and even put them into practice in my business, but Todd’s stories, examples and framework in the book for putting into practice these secret identities has shifted my view of how I can use DIFFERENT Alter Ego’s in the areas I struggle most.Interestingly, it’s not only “work†that I am challenged to show up how I need to, it’s at home, too.I’m on chapter 11 of the audio book right now, and can tell you, this book is a game changer for me as a mom, a wife and a leader.I'll be gifting this book to every member of my team, as well as friends and clients alike, because who can't use a little motivation to bring out the hero inside? So Good.
The main idea of this book is to get the reader to imagine themselves as a different character to get the results they want. It is written a bit too fluffy for my tastes (here's a story about Bob, Bob made this work, etc. like many self help books) but some may find the examples more useful, I skimmed most of them. That being said, I did find the techniques useful and an actively using them. What I find interesting though is that humans seem to have an innate capability to do this, perhaps schizophrenia is when this innate ability is in the far end of the spectrum, but normally it is useful and serves an evolutionary advantage!
The power of the Alter Ego Effect is brilliantly captured in this book. Todd Herman talks through how to use the power of your creative imagination so you can, within minutes, start to shape a narrative about you that serves you.As an athlete I've unknowningly used Alter Egos for years to perform on the hockey field. But by consciously going through Todd's Alter Ego process I've been able to launch a successful podcast, start a coaching practice and push myself outside my comfort zone. This has helped me achieve goals that I had forever though were just "good ideas".I'd highly encourage you to read this book and use Todd's principles to pull out the YOU whose capable of greatness.. whatever your Field of Play.
Full disclosure: I not only got an early copy, I helped Todd edit the book and even pushed him to actually finish it (like all first time authors, he was anxiopus about it).I don't have much to add to the book in terms of telling you whats in it, the other reviews cover that well. I just want to tell you that this is the first book of its type that has a truly original idea I've read in a LONG LONG time.Don't get me wrong--Todd did not invent the idea of alter egos, obviously. From Clark Kent back to the Muses, the ideas in the book are universal and timeless.But that's what makes this book so good, is that Todd is the first to really identify and explain them. Its like he's the guy teaching fish that they live in water.This book will, at a minimum, be a great read for you. But what most people will get from it will be a life-changing shift of perspective that creates some incredible breakthroughs (it did for me).

Your Alter Ego isn't a fraud. It's YOU helping YOU perform at your best. It's you getting out of your own way. I know that one reason I resonate so strongly with Todd's take about alter egos is how much it correlates to my own views about our intuition, and why for too many, we lose touch with the importance our intuition plays in our hearts and minds, as well as our confidence and ability to not only believe we can do great things, but actually accomplish great things.
When I first heard about the concept of alter egos, I was intrigued. But I wondered if this would really apply to me, so I decided to read the book and find out. I'm impressed and highly recommend this book.First, the author Todd Herman is an expert in this space and has been coaching top performers for decades. Second, he explains the concepts in an engaging and relatable way with many examples of people who have used this—people you may be surprised about.You may already be using an alter ego. I realized I was (trying to), but Herman gave me the tools to really amp it up and use it in a way that’s consistent.Also, great takeaways from this book were the 5 bridges to progress and moments of impact. Since reading this book, I’ve started thinking about my career and relationships in those terms and already see a huge difference. 

I love the way this book contains actionable steps for you to apply the alter ego approach in your life. There are so many areas of my life—fields of play— where I can use this.

Great book. However this copy was not "very good condition" as the binding of the book was loose and so the top cover would slide up and down while the bottom cover remained stationary. This was my second copy of the book, my previous copy was "good" condition, but was actually much nicer than the "very good condition" version. Disappointing, but the work done to create the book is wonderful.
Covers all the major, famous bridges in wonderful detail.Too bad it appears to be out of print!If you find a reasonably priced copy in good condition it is definitely worth purchasing.
I love this book! It is well written and interesting. The pictures are wonderful.

Had seen this book before and wanted a copy for myself. Excellent and informative.
The condition of the book overall was good. I was a little upset about the torn cover and the fading of pages. I had purchased this book as a gift for a friend who loves bridges. He was pleased and happy so nothing else mattered. This book makes a great coffee table book and it has tons of information. I didn't realize every picture was in grey scale, had some color been added I think it would have been much better.
All of the author's books are well researched accompanied by wonderful photography.
