About the Author
Craig E. Johnson (PhD, University of Denver) is emeritus professor of leadership studies at George Fox University, Newberg, Oregon, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in leadership, ethics, management and communication. During his time at the university he served as director of the George Fox Doctor of Business Administration program and chair of the Department of Communication Arts. Though retired from full-time teaching, Johnson continues to serve as an adjunct professor. He is the author of Organizational Ethics: A Practical Approach (also published by Sage) and co-author, with Michael Z. Hackman, of Leadership: A Communication Perspective. His research findings, instructional ideas, and book reviews have been published in the Journal of Leadership Studies, the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, the Journal of Leadership Education, Academy of Management Learning and Education, the International Leadership Journal, Communication Quarterly, Communication Reports, and other journals. In 2016 he received the George Fox University outstanding graduate faculty researcher award. Johnson has led and participated in service and educational trips to Honduras, Kenya, Rwanda, New Zealand, China, and Brazil and has held volunteer leadership positions in a variety of religious and nonprofit organizations. As a major fan of Oscar Martinez's journalism I was simply counting the days for this books release once I got my hands on it I cracked the book open and I began yet another literary journey into the darkness that has engulfed Central America. The book for those of you who haven't read it is most definitely not for the faint of heart lots of depiction of violent crimes such as homicides. At times I often found myself setting the book down in order to not lose my full faith in humanity but my faith however remained thanks to journalistic heroism of Oscar Martinez who constantly puts his own life at risk while covering events in Latin America. One of the most striking aspects of this particular book is that Oscar Martinez decided to center part of the book that takes place in his native El Salvador around a single individual know as El Niño Hollywood or El Kid Hollywood. Quite possibly one of the most interesting real life characters in modern literary history a notorious Mara Salvaturcha hitman turned state's witness for the government who often describes his claimed murders in a casual manner. I never thought that I could feel for someone as malevolent as this cat but thanks to Oscar Martinez immersive writing I found myself empathizing to a certain degree with The Kid. All in all this book is an excellent depiction of crime , destruction , and the corruption of both human nature and the state. Long live Oscar Martinez!!Tips for Taking on this Book1. Read The Beast by Oscar Martinez first it's technically the spiritual predecessor of this book . The book will also allow you to get used to Oscar Martinez writing style which is an immersive one and immediately places the reader into the action taking place. After which Oscar Martinez gives the reader some background over the situation at hand as the chapter continues.2. Brush up on your Central American Geography the book includes a map of Central American countries and the states that compose them. I find that it would have been super helpful if the publisher had placed the exact geographic location of all of the cities that are depicted in the book.3. Highly recommend this book to anyone who's into Criminal Justice or human migration patterns. Also if you are a fan of The Wire or any other cerebral cop shows you'll probably enjoy the hell out of this book. Oscar Martinez's writing is similar to that of David Simon's and Ed Burns writing on the show in which you are usually thrust into the action and are given background as the episode ensues.
People who are running for their lives from Guatemala and Honduras and El Salvador aren't criminals. They are tying to escape criminality. They are desperate. They are true refuges --and this book illustrates that point beautifully.
Excellent! Americans should read this book for a greater understanding of how the U.S. has contributed to the mess in Central America and at our southern border. We must help Mexico deal with the problems not build a wall!

About the Author
James L. Garlow is the author of fifteen books on historical, theological, and cultural issues, including the New York Times bestseller Cracking Da Vinci’s Code. He is the senior pastor of Skyline Church in San Diego. Since 2011, Garlow has served as the National Chairman of Pulpit Initiative. Garlow received his Ph.D. in historical theology from Drew University in Madison, NJ, in addition to degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary (Th.M.), Asbury Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Southern Nazarene University (B.A. & M.A.). The scriptural references and the application of those references where excellent and eye opening. I want to be Christian who follows the Bible, not just the current trends. The Bible based evidence was excellent. Often times I found myself agreeing with what Mr. Garlow had written and was encouraged to have the biblical backing. A great read from cover to cover or even just as a reference on current hot topics.
I believe that the Bible has the answer to every life issue that we face today. Jim Garlow does an absolute excellent job in connecting specific passages of the Bible to what is happening in our world today. I recommend this book to all who want to become totally informed, especially minister and other leaders of all churches everyone.

I don't know for sure but I suspect that most adults struggle with anxiety to some extent. There are a lot of potential things to be stressed about in this world - some which can easily be dismissed logically, but many that are genuine concerns that probably will happen. Since this is a universal problem there are many Christian books out there on how to combat anxiety. When amazon vine offered me a book by Max Lucado I was happy to take it. I could use some help in this area of my life. I've read a few by this author. I know he has a solid, Biblical worldview.I expected this to be an encouraging, somewhat lightweight, book that I could enjoy for a few hours, take a little bit out of, and pass along for someone else to enjoy. My first impression of the book did not sway me from this view. The main section is only about 150 pages long, with a good amount of pages blank (between chapters) or devoted to a single large quote. I hate that sort of thing in a book but, oh well, I didn't pay for this anyway.To my slight surprise, despite the blank or 3/4 empty pages, this is a substantial treatment on the subject. Yes, it is encouraging, full of anecdotes and easy to read but it contains practical steps on combatting anxiety. Based on Philippians 4: 4-8 the author patiently dissects a very powerful passage of scripture and shows you exactly what you need to do to derive maximum benefit from these verses.I normally don't think much one way or the other when it comes to the use of acronyms when it comes to teaching (I can't remember a single one to be honest) but Max uses the acronym CALM as a teaching tool to show how to apply these verses.C - Celebrate God's Goodness - "Rejoice in the Lord Always"A - Ask God For Help - "Let your requests be made known to God"L - Leave Your Concerns With Him - "With Thanksgiving"M - Meditate On Good Things - "Think about the things that are good and worthy of praise"He breaks down each verse into understandable concepts that work in real life. I believe I will actually use this acronym to remind myself of the principles here. This is not a heavy theological book. These are simple real-life-applicable instructions for anyone who is willing to apply it. Medicine for a universal ailment. If you take the medicine you will see results. If you acknowledge the truth of the medicine but don't take it you will not see results. If you take a lower dosage, less often you will see lesser results. Surprisingly I have underlined many of the passages in this book that I plan to read over and over. I hope to get this type of thinking into my daily life until it becomes unconscious. Very much like the Gospel, this book will be of great benefit to anyone who simply receives it.Some personal thoughts before I go:One particular passage moved me greatly: "The benefit of being a great sinner is dependence upon a great grace. I found a forgiveness that is too deep to be plumbed, too high to be summited. I have never been more or less saved than the moment I was first saved. Not one bad deed has deducted from my salvation. No good deed, if there are any, has enhanced it. My salvation has nothing to do with my work and everything to do with the finished work of Christ on the cross."This is absolute truth. If you are a believer you should know one thing: God will never be angry with you again. He swore that in Isaiah 54, which comes after you believe in what happened in Isaiah 53. God has a Covenant of Peace with you that will never, ever be removed. When we get that deep down in our souls most of our anxiety will effortlessly evaporate.
This book is wonderful.The title "Anxious For Nothing" isn't a gentle scold on being anxious for no reason. The book acknowledges that there are many things in life that cause us anxiety. Rather, the book is about trusting God in such a way that gives Him control over our anxieties and leaves us exactly that...anxious for nothing. "Because the Lord is near, we can be anxious for nothing."This is my first Max Lucado book, so I was a bit surprised at its actual brevity; only 152 pages of narrative (with every couple pages filled with just a single sentence) with a remaining 70 pages of reflection questions and Bible verses. This is fine, especially if the book is read as part of a study, but I admit I did feel a bit cheated.That being said, I very much enjoyed the counsel of Max Lucado and how it was supported with Scripture in context. (It seems so many Christian writers take Scripture out of context these days.) I found myself jotting down little bits in a notebook and adding a few nuggets to the margins of my Bible. This is by far the best book I have read in terms of a Biblical approach to anxiety that makes sense and is Scripture-based.
When I see the name MAX LUCADO my interest is captured. When I ran across ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING: FINDING CALM IN A CHAOTIC WORLD, I ordered it immediately. I have run across many in my life that struggle with anxiety. I think if we were honest, most of us do in one form or another, at different times in our lives.ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING goes beyond what the title may first bring to mind. Anxious comes in many levels. We all have feared, worried, wanted to know what is going to happen ahead of time. Wondered if we are making the right decision, if the decision we make is the right one.ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING gives practical and Biblical ways to reduce fear, anxiety and uncertainty. I am three fourths of the way through the book, and so excited about what it contains I had to stop and write a review. Whether you believe you have a large or small issue with anxiety, or perhaps know of someone that does, ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING will be a benefit to your life. A must read by all, and one you will wish you had the funds to purchase a book for everyone in your life.

This is a good book for someone who has no idea on how to plan a memorial service. It has some useful tips and did help me tie up some loose ends so I am glad I purchased it. I had a basic idea of what I wanted in our Celebration of Life so this book was a nice supplement to that.
I had no idea how to go about planning a non-religious celebration of life for our mother who died recently. It was reassuring to find a guide.The memorial itself went very smoothly, and we received many compliments from guests.
Purchased this prior to my husbands death. He did not want a funeral and this gave memany great ideas on how to plan his Celebration of Life. So glad I did. It was a joyous occasion.
It has all the info needed to plan a service. I'm not very far into it yet but it looks very helpful so far.
The book gives some thought provoking ideas on making last arrangements; I was already aware of most of the suggestions having been a social worker with disabled and vulnerable adults, and hospice volunteer who was with clients in their final hours. However for someone new to death and dying this might be more helpful. All in all, I did get a couple of ideas for my mother's funeral.
Every family should have this little book on the bookshelf for when they need it. I wish I'd had this straight-forward, thoughtful and easy to follow resource when I was planning the memorial service for my mother.
