Many people Believe in different forms of Christianity, go to church, participate but do not understand the underlying principles behind what they believe. I was one of those until I read this book. And I ordered this book in Spanish for my friend who doesn't read English. It has given us a lot of things to talk about. She is Catholic and I am Evangelical Christian, although raised Catholic. It is easy to read and should be required reading for any Christian believer no matter what denomination. No wonder Mr. CS Lewis is called a Classic, his words are as timely as ever!

This book is a call to a deeper, simpler, more humble way of life which is intended to allow holiness and God's Spirit to live more fully in our lives. I will never live in a monastery - am not even Catholic - but it has caused me to examine the way I live in every aspect, and whether it is motivated by physical pleasures and selfish ends or the desire to see God and welcome His divine and eternal voice into my world. Some may see the rules as unnecessary, or an insult to the grace of God, but the human tendency to slip into baser ways of thought beg for a well-examined mode of life. The introduction by Thomas Moore is in itself worth the price of the book.
This is a short book with very interesting forwards. Hundreds of years old. The first half I found the most interesting. It reminds me that there was a time of commitment , devotion to God, sacrifice for the greater good and less focus on self. This is a good book to read between books. It's refreshing and gives one much material to ponder in our fast moving world.

This book is classic! There are so many great lessons to be learned. Some things noted in this book are common sense (or so we think). Other examples might be ones we already know but -- oh, how wonderful to be refreshed and see it in writing (staring you right in the face).As I look back in my notes (that I find written all over this book), I come across just a few that I would like to share:1. Do not grumble; prefer moderation / restraint of speech. How easy it is to get caught up in useless conversation. The tongue holds the key - it is better to be quiet and listen. A wise man is known by his few words.2. No task is beneath you. Always remain humble (humility, obedience). You are not above anyone, so treat all as your equal. Be the 1st to show respect. Everyone has a purpose, so remember that all people can be useful.3. Life is not fair, but we must endure.4. Guard yourself from your own wicked ways,5. Forget your own will - you are now doing the will of a higher power by helping others and placing them first (even before yourself).6. Do not overindulge; everything in moderation.7. No favoritism but you must show compassion for the weak.8. Everyone makes mistakes. You must give someone the chance to be humble and the opportunity to correct their own wrongdoings.9. All of us need guidance; we need someone to turn to because we are all not without fault.10. You must be worthy of being called a leader. The higher your post, you should have even higher standards; rather than an abuse of power. You have been given a tremendous responsibility - use it wisely.Lastly, I have begun a journey concerning a small collection of books in a `particular genre'. Thus far, they all touch some of the same basic human principles that we should all strive for. A list of these books include: The Rule of St. Benedict, Tao Te Ching, I Ching, Mencius, Confucius, The Dhammapada, St. Augustine, and a few books from D. E. Tarver concerning - the way of the samurai. To think some of these books are still in existence after hundreds, and thousands of years. That is definitely something to revere and admire.
If you are on a spiritual journey in life this is your book. St Benedict was always a lay person and in his spiritual journey there is much to be learned. St Benedict writings can take you back 1,500 + years to a different time and view on spirituality. This is not a one time read through but rather one to refer back to often as part of a contemplative prayer life. The Bendictine teachings serve all peoples of all denominations. You do not need to be a Catholic to appreciate and benefit for making this reading part of your spiritual journey.
Ageless guidance for individual and group spirituality. Always practical and aware of varying needs, St Benedict wrote his 'Rule' in a time when direction seemed very chaotic in religious houses. As fresh now as when it was written, this book is a jewel for loving application.
This edition starts with a helpful introduction of Lectio Divina reading (read, meditate, rest in God, govern one's actions) by the editors. Thomas Moore (Care for the Soul) then presents the "rule" not as an edict but as a measure for spiritual progress. He states monks have a sense of humor, but his Franciscan past is probably more open than Benedict's "only a fool raises his voice in laughter". According to the "rule" a lot depends upon the abbot, and the monk must accept the abbot's ruling, fair or not, as an exercise in obedience and prayer.I think the rule has relevance even to a modern, non-monastic Christian life, by offering a model of rhythm and simplicity. In this time of shaken confidence, the twelve steps of humility is a refreshing thought. The rule presents a challenge to the modern to "Renounce yourself in order to follow Christ".

Bennett Alan Weinberg is a leading authority on the science of caffeine. In 1986 he founded a consulting firm specializing in pharmaceutical and medical communications, serving many of the Fortune 500 companies. I've spent enough time in 68 years in and out of hospitals to know that what one can rely on and what works for them is best learned from experience rather than another person's words of advice. Weinberg speaks from his experiential base, with wisdom, and I've also experienced first hand the benefits of caffeine. I don't drink coffee, but I do use caffeine pills and have, as the authors advise, moderate my use of them by accessing my wisdom base for appropriate amounts and when to take them. I drive for a living and could not do this job without them. They've been keeping me alive for 13 years of driving, in all kinds of weather and at all hours of any 24 hour period. I don't care whom he works for or whatever, I've found his words to be honest. With the pill, you can take it 15 minutes before a job or workout and it will "kick in" when you need it. It never fails to make me alert and elevate my mood. I can also know that the effects will wear off after 2 1/2 hours and I can sleep if I need to when I get home. Coffee is not so predictable, for me.
I don't neccessarily agree with their "safe" point of view but their ideas here are phenomenal, I love what they are saying!
Like a previous reviewer, I have read this book and the opposing one, Caffeine Blues. Both offer a multitude of scientific studies to support their respective viewpoints. I plan to reread them soon, and do a more detailed comparison.Like another previous reviewer, I especially found the chapter on using caffeine to combat depression fascinating. It gave me the courage (or bravado?) to substitute a small daily dose of caffeine for my Paxil, with encouraging results so far (two months).It's hard to remain objective about something like caffeine, as is obvious from the tone of some of the other reviews. I remember a friend who I highly respected, once sneering that coffee lovers would explain away studies linking coffee and heart disease by objecting that it was the cream in the coffee rather than the coffee itself causing the problem. Since that was before we had been told about the danger of the transfats used to make those fake "creamers", those coffee apologists were probably right. Moreover, it came to light soon after his sneering remark that some of those early studies had failed to correct for the fact that a disproportionate number of heavy coffee drinkers were also smokers... thus giving an even more compelling reason for the innocence of the coffee.I admit that I'm hoping caffeine proves to be beneficial rather than harmful. But I plan to be as fair as I can be.Let me also point out that the caffeine pills recommended by the author are inexpensive and the formula is not susceptible to copyright. You can buy generic versions in any drugstore, or just drink coffee. There is not a whole lot of benefit to any particular pharmaceutical company, so I don't find the claim that he is writing this for his corporate masters very compelling. The author of Caffeine Blues touts a lot of products in his book as well, so the "follow the money" argument doesn't seem to tip the balance in favor of either position.
A little difficult to read.A very interesting read.Only book in it's classthat I know of.It gives the pros andcons and effects ofcaffeine.
For the "weekend-warrior" who plays sport,or the more serious minded athlete,this book will give you a definite "boost" to your training - legally AND without side-effects!Foget about the negative press caffeine has recieved...get the FACTS,not the fiction from this manual.A "must-read" tome for ANY sportsman.

The topic of caffeine generates so much heat but little light. Critics of caffeine complain about an alleged lack of evidence, but never state what evidence they would count as sufficient support for the caffeine advantage. If they think the authors don't provide enough evidence, then it's incumbent on them to state what evidence would do so. It stunned me that the authors adduced as much evidence as they did including military research. BTW, who'd ever think someone would put up megabucks to study the effects of coffee or caffeine anyway? It would be like putting up hard earned money to study the effects of air or water on everyday health? Only Big Pharma at the dictates of Big Gov't puts up big bucks to back up their drugs with research. And that's another thing - if the authors are secretly backed by Starbucks or whatever, how come they only recommend about 100 mg of caffeine to enhance one's mood? Why not recommend several big gulps? But even if the authors were backed by caffeine based food producers, that would only mean their findings were suspect and worthy of closer examination, not false, and a few abusive cheap shots at his scholarship does nothing to refute their claims.
Thanks to this book I no longer feel guilty! Before reading it, I always noticed nothing but positve effects from caffeine. At the same time, there were all the talking heads babbling about how bad caffeine is. Now I know that in moderation, caffeine can help, "Sharpen Your Mind, Improve Your Physical Performance and Achieve Your Goals--the Healthy Way", just as the author states. One of the best books I've purchased from Amazon without question. Five stars for this one!

"A Field Guide to Western Butterflies" by Paul Opler is the book I use as a standard when taking part in the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) 4th of July Butterfly Count. It is by far the best book to use in the field. I prefer the artist's illustrations to a totally photographic approach for accurate identification because several aspects of the same species can be shown on a given plate. In addition there are a number of complementary photos of butterflies in natural habitats inserted in the text and distribution maps are placed next to the species descriptions.The discussions are very useful in locating food plants and in confirming field marks and distributions. Most of the time even tiny lycaenids and difficult skippers are usually identified easily once you get used to the format. All in all this is the book to have for identifying butterflies in the west and it outshines all its competitors for handiness in the field. Combined with a pair of short-focus binoculars and a good butterfly net for capture and release it just cannot be beaten.I found only one problem with this book, which is also true of other guides. Occasionally an illustration is slightly off in color or shows a more idealized pattern than seen in the field. In such cases (especially with some of the skippers and blues) identification is more difficult.That said if you are a butterfly watcher in the west you really need to own this book!
This book lives up to the quality expected of the Peterson Field Guide series. Descriptions are of 590 species of butterflies, with 110 color photos plus 44 color plates of images. Habitats and foods are described. Range maps point to where the species are. There's a lifelist at the back of the book and a good glossary. I recommend it.
This book is a great companion to A Field Guide to Eastern Butterflies. Since many U.S. species are found in both the East and in the West, this book is a must have if you really plan to study and/or collect butterflies found in the United States. I started collecting butterflies in the 1950's. The Peterson Field Guide books are extremely well done and are updated every few years.
The butterflies are difficult to identify using the plates as they are drawings and rather small. The few photos are nice, but photos are only available for a small number of butterflies. I had to use the internet for positive id for many of the specimens I found.
The Peterson field guides are the best for information on wildlife. Thank you.

Unlike some other reviewers I have always liked the Peterson guides best and this is no exception. The emphasis of the book is not simply on sight identification (which can be difficult at best) but also on a rounded education about the world of butterflies.The first several chapters cover butterfly habitat, life history, behavior and other things helpful for the collector or student. The main chapters are divided by common names with each sub-heading giving both common and scientific names. The butterflies are described according to range, size, and habitat, and there is typically some discussion of the insects' identifying peculiarities.This isn't the best guide for someone wanting to identity bugs in their garden - other guides have much better and many more photos - but for the general student this is the best.
I'm referring to the 1986 edition here, and perhaps later editions have resolved what seems to me a problem - too many of the illustrations (about half) are in black and white, and the descriptions on the pages facing them are not too helpful. A page labelled 'Hairstreaks, Coppers, Blues and Giant Skippers' faces a page of black-and-white illustrations; the only hint as to what color any of these butterflies may actually be is next to the one named Ferris's Copper: "duller, more grayish than that of Ruddy Copper." Ruddy Copper itself is indeed illustrated in color - 10 pages earlier. If I'm following some butterfly around, trying to identify it, it will certainly proceed to another yard before I can find a helpful color illustration of a similar butterfly or refer to the fuller descriptions in the front and back of the book. I'm not in this to catch them, just to see if I can figure out what's flying through here.

Craig E. Johnson (PhD, University of Denver) is emeritus professor of leadership studies at George Fox University, Newberg, Oregon, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in leadership, ethics, management and communication. During his time at the university he served as director of the George Fox Doctor of Business Administration program and chair of the Department of Communication Arts. Though retired from full-time teaching, Johnson continues to serve as an adjunct professor. He is the author of Organizational Ethics: A Practical Approach (also published by Sage) and co-author, with Michael Z. Hackman, of Leadership: A Communication Perspective. His research findings, instructional ideas, and book reviews have been published in the Journal of Leadership Studies, the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, the Journal of Leadership Education, Academy of Management Learning and Education, the International Leadership Journal, Communication Quarterly, Communication Reports, and other journals. As a major fan of Oscar Martinez's journalism I was simply counting the days for this books release once I got my hands on it I cracked the book open and I began yet another literary journey into the darkness that has engulfed Central America. The book for those of you who haven't read it is most definitely not for the faint of heart lots of depiction of violent crimes such as homicides. At times I often found myself setting the book down in order to not lose my full faith in humanity but my faith however remained thanks to journalistic heroism of Oscar Martinez who constantly puts his own life at risk while covering events in Latin America. One of the most striking aspects of this particular book is that Oscar Martinez decided to center part of the book that takes place in his native El Salvador around a single individual know as El Niño Hollywood or El Kid Hollywood. Read The Beast by Oscar Martinez first it's technically the spiritual predecessor of this book . The book will also allow you to get used to Oscar Martinez writing style which is an immersive one and immediately places the reader into the action taking place. After which Oscar Martinez gives the reader some background over the situation at hand as the chapter continues.2. Brush up on your Central American Geography the book includes a map of Central American countries and the states that compose them. I find that it would have been super helpful if the publisher had placed the exact geographic location of all of the cities that are depicted in the book.3. Highly recommend this book to anyone who's into Criminal Justice or human migration patterns. Also if you are a fan of The Wire or any other cerebral cop shows you'll probably enjoy the hell out of this book. Oscar Martinez's writing is similar to that of David Simon's and Ed Burns writing on the show in which you are usually thrust into the action and are given background as the episode ensues.
People who are running for their lives from Guatemala and Honduras and El Salvador aren't criminals. They are tying to escape criminality. They are desperate. They are true refuges --and this book illustrates that point beautifully.
Excellent! Americans should read this book for a greater understanding of how the U.S. has contributed to the mess in Central America and at our southern border. We must help Mexico deal with the problems not build a wall!

About the Author
James L. Garlow is the author of fifteen books on historical, theological, and cultural issues, including the New York Times bestseller Cracking Da Vinci’s Code. He is the senior pastor of Skyline Church in San Diego. Since 2011, Garlow has served as the National Chairman of Pulpit Initiative. Garlow received his Ph.D. in historical theology from Drew University in Madison, NJ, in addition to degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary (Th.M.), Asbury Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Southern Nazarene University (B.A. & M.A.). Not often do I run into a book that makes me really think about the ways I think and the ideals I hold. The scriptural references and the application of those references where excellent and eye opening. I want to be Christian who follows the Bible, not just the current trends. The Bible based evidence was excellent. Often times I found myself agreeing with what Mr. Garlow had written and was encouraged to have the biblical backing. A great read from cover to cover or even just as a reference on current hot topics.
I believe that the Bible has the answer to every life issue that we face today. Jim Garlow does an absolute excellent job in connecting specific passages of the Bible to what is happening in our world today. I recommend this book to all who want to become totally informed, especially minister and other leaders of all churches everyone.
