I like complicated things made simple. Although I have been podcasting since 2012 there are certain aspects that I still find confusing. Paul Colligan's "How to Podcast -Volume 4" cuts through a lot of nonsense I've accumulated over time about the podcast and condenses the process into a four-step process that even I can follow. This combined with providing links to the tools (Auphonic) you need to follow through on the four-step process made this a helpful book which will I will use as handy resource near my mic.
This book is awesome! I was lost on how to start my podcast, so many options with mics, software, places to post - OMG!With simple steps and a straight forward approach I was able to get out of my mental confusion and get a clear picture of how to do it without spending all my time and energy.Thank you so much Paul. This book was really a one stop for solving all my problems and for that I'm grateful.
Explain to me how the newer version of a book which I had the previous edition is 95 pages less? That doesn't make sense to me at all Very disappointed! Lot less information included in this version.
I have know Paul for 10 years and he is the go to guy to learn to podcast!As an experienced podcaster, this book provided me with immediate value :)At the same time it's written in a conversational way that would be a great quick start guide for a beginner.

As a 12er Shia Muslim, I believe that Gautama Buddha was a Prophet of God. What I like about Thay's approach is that he allows Theists to participate in his practice centers. He is known for helping people whether or not they are Buddhists. He was criticized by Communists and non-Communists for helping anyone in need during the Vietnam War. That is only one example of what I would call his "charity work". Of all the books by Buddhist authors on my shelf, this book and a few other books by Thich Nhat Hanh are my favorites.I began doing sitting and walking meditation using this book. Later, I purchased his commentaries on various sutras, as well as The Heart of Truth. The most recent book I read by Thay was Old Path, White Clouds: Walking in the Footsteps of the Buddha, which is actually the first book I would recommend one read by Thich Nhat Hanh. This book is a biography of Gautama Buddha that seems to be written for one who will be practicing Thich Nhat Hanh's flavor of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. After reading Old Paths, White Clouds, I believe a practitioner with no practice center nearby would have a bit easier time using Chanting from the Heart than if he or she started practicing only having the knowledge in this book.Of course, as a 12er Shia Muslim, I make Salat prayer, seek refuge in Allah, and read Quranic Sutras and follow the halal food laws. For those Buddhists who not only Five Mindfulness Trainings (5 Precepts) but are also Vegetarian or Vegan or just eat raw foods, those are excellent diets. Meat is allowed for Muslims, but Muslims are not obligated to eat meat. Thus, it is possible for a Muslim to practice the Five Mindfulness Trainings and even follow a meatless diet. In fact, the 1st of our 12 Imams, Ali Ibn Talib, who is the 4th Caliph of Sunni Muslims, wrote that one should not eat much meat. He also wrote that all people are either one's brother or sister in Islam, or one's equal in Adam, so a true Muslim ought to treat non-Muslims charitably and justly. That may seem like too much information, but I wrote the above for those Buddhists who may have had bad experiences with professing Muslims. Plenty of Sunni and Shia Muslims, including Sufis, love the Buddha and Buddhists. I am especially appreciative of Thich Nhat Hanh, as well as Theravada monk Bhikkhu Buddhi, who has produced a good large compilation of suttas and excerpts of suttas from the Pali Canon, as well as a good short book on the Eightfold Noble Path.Be happy practicing with Chanting From the Heart!
This book is a complete guide for daily personal practice and/or group practice. It is the only book I've found that offers an outline for everyday practice as well as an explanation and outline for ceremonies, which may be conducted throughout the year. Everything is explained in simple, easy-to-understand English, which is so typical of Thich Nhat Hahn's style.The book begins with a brief explanation of basic exercises. Next is a section on daily practice, which includes an outline of exactly what to do on a daily basis, and choices of recitations so you can change your routine periodically. Then the book has a section on ceremonies which is almost two-hundred pages in length. Instructions include ceremonies on the basics - refuge and mindfulness, the Buddha's birthday, New Year's ceremony, aspiration and praise ceremony, and a complete section on death, cremation and burial ceremonies. (A blessing ceremony and wedding ceremony are also included.) A section of discourses is next, and last is a section of music. It is a beefy book - 431 pages to be exact, and a nice ribbon marker is included in the binding.Even though Thich Nhat Hanh is a Zen Master, I have easily incorporated many of these practices into my daily Tibetan Buddhist routine.This is a great resource for the beginner or well-seasoned practitioner. Thank you Master for filling a void which has existed until now in western practice. I bow to you in great reverence for bringing easy-to-practice and understand Buddhism to the west. Thank you!

Thich Nhat Hanh and his students at Plum Valley have compiled this outstanding work, and rare glimpse of the traditions and ceremonies developed and practiced in his Centres. With numerous personal works, this prolific teacher and Bodhisattva allows everyone to share in the rituals and thought of mindfulness and oneness Buddhism. A great addition for all Buddhist and meditation centres.
Terrific book, so glad I found it. I have been using some of the ceremonies and the music from the CD for our weekly family meditation session and it has added so much to the experience. Couldn't be happier with it.
This book is full of great information and easy to follow. If you follow Thay online from Plum Village's Online Monastery on Vimeo you'll love this and I use it to add to my daily practice. My 12 year old also uses the mantras and prayers from this book. It gives several variations on breathing, meditation, etc. I'm grateful for the amount of information being available in one book.

I was disappointed in this book because it contains only small quilts, and no practical uses for them. While the designs are cute, and the piecing in the blocks is fairly easy, I have trouble envisioning myself making a double or queen size quilt out of two inch blocks. I guess it's been done, but it's probably more practical for placemats, or a table runner. Though she does show each pattern in two or more color ways, she doesn't suggest alternate settings which might increase their utility.
In Sew Charming, the deliciously dynamic duo of Mary Etherington and Connie Tesene occasionally step outside the Civil War era designs they are known for. It is rather shocking to see so many alternate colorways in bright crayon colors and mod geometric prints. Plus, there is one quilt, "Diagonal Stripes" (33.5"×41.75") whose design could cause another Revolutionary War in the quilting world.But change is good, right? (Sniff, sniff ... right?) Perhaps the book will appeal to a wider audience. One great example is "Beach Ball Pinwheels" (31.5"×36") with its circles cut from 42 Pinwheel blocks. The curved edges are not folded over, but are sewn on as is and left to fray.There are several beautiful color combinations. The Civil War inspired "Charming Geese Runner" (17.5"×41.5") softly glows with its golds and warm browns. Its alternate surprises with an almost Asian inspiration. "Strawberries and Cream" (26.5"×35") is a calm alternate for the bling-y jewel tones of "Snowballs and Nine Patches".Etherington and Tesene do stick with their tradition of offering small quilts with small blocks, based mostly on traditional forms with Era-based fabrics. These new slightly mod outliers, which may very well appeal to more quilters, practically caused a Civil War right on my own bookshelf.
The projects are just what I'm looking for., Everyone's a winner. Country Threads has been a wonderful design team ever since they began. I love the way they assemble charm packs and color.
I often buy 5" charm squares when I find a lot of them on sale and I order 2-3 of them at the same time, same patterns. That way I have enough when making quilts like these in this book. How easy and fun this has been. Highly recommend this book.

After reading eight Clint Wolf books back to back, am I tired of Clint Wolf mysteries? Short answer....umm, no. I think I could read these books as long as B.J puts them out - absolutely addicted to Clint Wolf mysteries. This one is no exception. A teacher at the local middle school is murdered, her body found twisted in a tree thanks to a tornado that touched down before hurricane Samson hits the small town of Mechant Loup. With rains pouring down and gusty winds from the leading edge of hurricane Samson, Clint and Susan have the devil of a time trying to keep the integrity of crime scene intact. As too who did the foul deed, that's proving to be as difficult as the conditions they're working under and the killer may escape justice. But Not Formidible was a real puzzler and Clint has a deal of a time trying to figure out the motive for the killing since the teacher was seemingly well liked. Another excellent Clint Wolf Mystery :)
Once again a Clint Wolf novel couldn’t be put down. I received an email from BJ Bourg announcing the early release of his newest book, I didn’t wait but bought it right away.The continuing story of Clint Wolf and his wife Susan continues to bring reading pleasure. I follow a few authors and as someone on another authors page said why waste time reading ok books when you can read great books.
I again found myself not able to put this book down in the Clint Wolf series. I love the characters and the escape that he offers every time. I loved The setting and the weather. He made you feel like you were there. The characters are so real and you feel the love he has for writing in every book. Way to go BJ! Can't wait for the next book in the series.
One thing for sure, BJ Bourg' s books just flow beautifully! I have never figured them out early and I am usually pretty good at that.The characters and the stories are really awesome! I totally recommend all of his books!

The Racket programming language and this book have changed my thinking about coding in general. If you are an enthusiast, a hacker (the good sense of hacker), a coder who enjoys making nifty code, get this book and learn Racket. I can mangle my way through code in Processing (a Java domain specific language extension), Python, and Ruby. I plan to do all my future work in Racket. I highly recommend that anyone who is self taught or has suffered a mis-education in computer science also work through the open source book "How to design programs." Absolutely essential. "Realm of Racket" + "How to design programs" = mastery.
I'm 30% through (and planning on finishing) but Realm of Racket seems to be missing some important parts. A lot of the learning seems to be implicit - there is code, you copy it, and learning seems to be assumed to take place. The code blocks are there - but not really well explained.What else is frustrating is that the code doesn't run even if I copy it all from the book. There is extra code hidden in the racket app installation that is required to run the example games that I've seen. I want the code explained - and I know it's possible because lots of coding books have the code all in the book - but this doesn't.It's hard enough to learn Racket - and this book isn't really helping very much.
You will not fall asleep after reading only one page. It is entertaining as well as informative. It described things in Racket that I could find no where else.It is a very good introduction to the language. If you have to take Northeastern's CS5010 and work threw this book before starting the course, you will be 2 steps ahead of most other students. The book was not designed for this course but is still a good reference for the course. It uses some things not allowed in the course and the course covers more than what is in the book. Even if you did not use the book before starting the course it is still worth reading at times.
The inverted review bell curve on Abelson's seminal book on Lisp and functional programming (Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs, Second Edition) shows either love or hate, and little in between! Those who love it say it is a life changing experience for mathematicians, engineers and physicists as well as programmers, and indeed Abelson does border on the mystical when describing nested recursive functions with "hundreds" of parentheticals preceding quantum-level differential equations, all running on numerics, beneath which are (self defining recursive quantum states) and....The problem, especially with those who hate it, is that lambda calculus, recursion, and multiple paradigm (imperative, functional, logical, etc.) models mean that each sentence is an adventure in study, not reading. IOW, I stopped highlighting when I realized I was highlighting the whole page!This awesome new Racket gem makes Abelson an unprecedented one-two punch if you REALLY want to understand some of the hottest new concepts in programming-- at a 30,000 foot level, yet with a TON of fun, down to earth exercises. Lisp has evolved as the second oldest (months after FORTRAN) language that is not only still in use, but still producing new dialects, as this book demonstrates! I mean, a data structure not of hashes and trees but of LISTS??? You'll learn to your amazement how lists can even handle multiprocessor and concurrent computing nightmares with recursion that would defy the most agile trees. Talk about ancient and up to date at the same time!The coolest thing about Racket, and even Scheme and Common Lisp, is that you can create your own "complete" programming environment, in this case to play with art and games, including compilers and interpreters! C# started with some multi paradigm elements and is now even adding functional programming, but being part of the .net family, there are limits. Yes, you can design a GUI AND a game in C#, but Racket allows you to create an entire programming universe from o/s to environment, SDK, compiler, GUI, language, libraries... all virtually!If you look at a typical coding interview, you'll have the "solve this phony, contrived problem" on the whiteboard. Yet four of the hottest career areas in IT AREN'T in specific language coding (so much of it is being outsourced to India, China and Russia)-- they are in management of: 1. Data Science 2. Embedded Systems 3. Networking 4. Sploits.There even is a new "CTO" type job-- CDSO, for "Chief Data Science Officer." These management, team leadership and high level positions don't require you to create a list prioritization algorithm on the whiteboard in C# in half an hour, but they DO require you to understand how systems from the machine and network levels relate to solutions in choice of languages, software and --especially-- paradigms.In talking with programmers and engineers all day who submit new software for patents, I'm astonished at how many got all the way through even grad school (including Stanford and MIT) without taking a single paradigm class! They can generally tell you which apps work better with trees vs. arrays, but at a high level, why to choose functional vs. imperative is often really foggy.Solution: PLAY WITH RACKET, then read Abelson! Even if you're an autodidact, this awesome and up to date Lisp text is perfect for self study when carving out your own dream job or starting your own practice. The authors are teachers par excellance, and the pedagogy is beyond painless-- you're half way through recursion vs. iteration before even knowing you've learned it! And while you're at it, you are playing with components and paradigms in ways you've never tried before even if you're a Lisp jock-- because this text takes the time to INCLUDE imperative and logical options. This is possible because Racket moves a little toward OOP just as C# (3.0 and up) has moved a little toward functional, including many steps beyond Scheme.For those who feel Lisp is out of date or a "has been" (never mind that Lisp invented garbage collection and even presaged early oop (data/object/call/argument units) and that binaries and other newer data structures are coming back around to lists in some of the hottest research, even IN imperative), I guarantee that this book will dispel your doubts! And, if you tried Abelson, loved it, but was missing half the points (I sure was), try Racket first--Abelson won't become easy, but it will, as Abelson said himself as his primary objective, make it a LOT more fun.Be SURE to get the second edition of Abelson, however, as he completely reoriented it around a new central theme crucial today to multiprocessing-- the time/memory challenge. You can get Ableson 2ed (see link in first paragraph) used at a great price now. I give it as a gift to programmer friends, and this new Racket text would make a great gift too! This author also wrote the awesome Little Schemer book (The Little Schemer - 4th Edition) which is another excellent adjunct to Abelson.EMAIL ANSWER: A new lisper asked if this book will help with things like closure. Absolutely! In fact, lexical (or functional) closure, when combined with environments, binding and defun/define macros ARE oop at a very basic level, except that they REQUIRE garbage collection. Let Over Lambda (LoL) is "the" closure book, but Racket gives many more practical tips and uses than that "heavy" text (no comparison really, this book is pure enjoyment, LoL requires two double shot starbuck ventis per sentence-- NOT for beginners). Q. How can other languages implement closure? A. Technically C can't due to no garbage collection (hence no fast and unlimited stack vs. heap options, especially since it and C++ are stack based), but C# and many others can.Although anonymous methods ARE NOT closure, they offer "closure analogs" like callbacks and blocks (in C and C++ for you circuit folks), Local classes in Java, Delegates, and after 3.0, even lambda expressions in C# (do NOT use closure if a lamda will work more simply), overloading operators, etc. Scheme/Racket/Lisp/Clojure... jocks will argue that the differences between oop and functional are semantic, because 1 macro can take care of inheritance, and object orientation is another word for a LISP list function combining procedure and state, and with closure, can easily duplicate the entire oop benefit. Macros are essentially functions that return lists as this book will teach us, but since those lists can just as easily contain code as data, as well as environments and bindings, the "oop" concept was either anticipated, subsumed, or invented by Lisp decades ago, depending on your point of view!The whole point of learning Racket, at a deep level of understanding paradigm fits in addition to the fun apps in this book, is about time and memory and really "getting" high level (but deep and detailed) program and systems engineering, in many more aspects than most programmers encounter. Vey interesting book, the foundations acquired here will prove useful when delving into more advanced texts on Scheme/Lisp programming languages, some of the examples were hard to follow, but that was mostly due to the fact that I was not very used at this type of programming language. Definitely give it a try.
I'm new to Lisp and functional programming and this gave many intuitive and concise examples of Racketcoding style and functional programming. I'm sure it didn't dive into many of the advanced ideas on the topic, but it was fun and enough to get me started doing some functional programming. Very fun. Very well written.
