Another book I started a while ago and just finished, ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Income Figure isn't very long or very complicated; it makes for a good, quick read about blogging.If you don't know ProBlogger, you should, at least if you're interested in blogging: it's the go-to blog about blogs. Yes, I love meta and the word "blog" will come frequently in this post.In any case, as I left the academic world and decided to try something new, I thought about starting blogs for money. I love to write, I seem to be pretty good at managing and producing content, and I'm sure there are things I could share with the world... for a profit.The book goes through the three steps of making money from blogs: Setting up a blog Making it popular Earning money from itThe most important lesson I got from the book is the importance of choosing a niche; it helps build a loyal community, get expertise and great, contextualized advertising. However, except for the generic "start by identifying your own interests, passions, and energy levels for topics", there's not a lot of direction about how to choose a profitable niche. There also isn't much about search engine optimization (which I fortunately covered in another book) or about keyword research. However, a lot of the things that Rowse and Garrett hold important (niching, ads, etc) aren't necessarily the be-all and end-all of popular blogging.The one section I found really useful was the monetizing section where the authors explain all about choosing the right ads, affiliate programs and other revenue streams. While I'm sure there's more complete info on this (it could be worth an entire book), it was a good introduction and gave me guidelines if I ever have to do something like this myself.In general I found ProBlogger interesting and informative, even if it doesn't delve too deep into any of the topics the authors touch on. Even the case study in the last chapter lacked depth-I would have liked to know more about how he managed his content, built a community, etc. But as an introduction to professional blogging, it does the job.
If you are blogging to make money and haven't read this book, you are in for a treat! Co-authors Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett lay out all of the details that the aspiring blogger needs in order to begin earning money at blogging. The book also pulls no punches in telling the readers how much work they will have to put in and how remarkable their blogs really must be to draw advertising dollars. Professional blogging is indeed full-time work, make no mistake. Darren and Chris have created in this manual a detailed roadmap for new and experienced bloggers alike who might have unique idea for a blog and enough passion and material about the topic for the long haul. I've got a blog and now I have a million new ideas about how to make the blog more "can't live without it" for my current subscribers and how to reel in more new readers. The book is an easy and enjoyable read. I read the entire thing in one cross-country flight. The sections of their book that I found most useful were the chapters on income and earning strategies, how to write a blog, blogging for a niche, blog networks, blog promotion and marketing, and the secrets of successful blogging. If you're a blogger, this is a book you shouldn't be without. The authors make all of their income from blogging and this book brightly lights the way for the anyone who aspires to be a pro blogger.
After reading this, I found it to be a good resource for the beginning to intermediate blogger. There is a lot of content that is blindingly obvious for anyone who has been blogging for even a short period of time, but the author's have managed to include topics that even intermediate bloggers will find useful.I have been running a relatively successful blog for over a year now with great traffic, but I have failed to monetize it. I was hoping this book would help me figure out that part of the equation. It did help add some perspective to structuring content to pull in more readers, while also doing the whole SEO thing.To those reviewers who complained that this info could be found on a variety of websites about blogging, that claim could be made about most books sold on Amazon. The purpose of going out to buy the book is convenience and reliability of information. If you want to spend days or weeks looking for and collating the same information, by all means, have at it. If you want it in a convenient package, then get this book.My only complaint, would be the price. I'd barely pay $12 for the paperback, so I'd hoped the Kindle version would be around the $10 mark. Seems a bit pricey for a digital download.
If you're new to the blogosphere then this book is brilliant, but if you're already somewhat experienced then you need to start looking elsewhere. It's really just all the blogging basics in one tome, but as far as building strategies it lacks a little bit. I do recommend it to anyone who wants to start they're own blog or has done it already and has yet to learn a little.

Though I wish this would have been longer,you can't help but attempt to read this book cover to cover in one sitting.O'Neill manages to blend the stories and the landscape of middle earth almost effortlessly with the psychological understandings of Carl Jung.The result is a richly rewarding read that any one with an interest in furthering their Lord of the Rings knowledge should dive into.Even if your understanding of Jung isn't that in depth, O'Neill goes out of his way to give a brief summary of some of the fundamentals in an attempt to make a few terms and ideas smoother for the beginning reader.At the same token,though this book does make a very convincing case for Jung's ideas in the lord of the rings mythology,no where does O'Neill claim this was the intention of Tolkien when he began writing out the chronicles of middle earth.This book simply shows how easy they both blend together.If you are a fan of lord of the rings and want to further your knowledge and wish to place a meaning behind the works of Tolkien,this book will only add weight and depth to your enthusiasm for your love of middle earth.If you are a follower of Jung's psychology than this book will give an amazing example of how to place Jungian idea's within the context of myth in a simular fashion to the amazing works of Joseph Campbell.If you are familiar with both,well than a book like this is the best of both worlds.

This was one of the first books to deal with Tolkien by way of Carl Jung, and it remains one of the best. The author makes no over-reaching claims, but merely demonstrates how Tolkien's deeply personal mythology of Middle-Earth parallels the concepts of archetypes & the Collective Unconscious posited by Jung. In fact, if you've seen images from Jung's fabled "Red Book" then you'll see how similar his tree imagery is to that of Tolkien's own illustrations of Middle-Earth -- almost as if both are drawn from a shared archetypal image of Tree.The major archetypes are invoked here: Anima, Shadow, Self. In every case, the author never tries to force Tolkien's work into a pre-determined, Procrustean pigeonhole -- but he does make clear how well the Jungian model works as a means of better understanding the power of Tolkien's creation. It's this genuine mythic power that separates Tolkien from all his imitators, as he possessed not only a rich intellectual knowledge of myth, but a visceral, even spiritual knowledge of it. Middle-Earth is the full & flowering expression of an individual human being, not a flimsy & formulaic construct that mimics the surface without ever touching the substance.Whether your interest is primarily in Tolkien or Jung, this is an excellent introduction to the wisdom of their lifelong work. If I have any complaint, it's only that I wish it were longer -- but perhaps it's better this way, in that it leaves you wanting more & encourages you to seek it out on your own. Highly recommended!
A wonderful book for anyone with a taste for any combination of Tolkien, Jung and a bit of military history, which is where the author comes from. I will remember forever, "Smaug is what we in Othellos's trade would call an area weapon." I bought a first edition on a remainder table in a bookstore in St. Petersburg (Florida) in 1981 and I treasure it to this day!Informed, intelligent and highly recommended!
I read this book a long time ago - in the early 80s - but still remember and recommend it to anyone interested in personality theorists, such as C.G. Jung. Rather than critique its strengths , weaknessed, accuracies, and inaccuracies, I'll describe its impact on me. Prior to it reading, I'd spent a hour or 2 reading about Jung by way of a undergraduate Psych Class. The summer after I read it, I worked my way independantly through the index to and about a third of the text of Jung's collected works, and all of the popular Jung ("Man & his Symbols", etc) I could find. It drew from love of Middle Earth, introducing me to a larger, equally numinous world.

The book is super small, about 100 pages and smaller than my hand. Would not have paid $12 if seen in person, maybe $5. Haven't read it yet, will update when I do
While Iceland has become more known to the rest of the world in the past decade, there is still much to be desired in the realm of folktales, language resources, and culture related materials. Thankfully, Alda is helping to turn this around. These folktales were completely new to me, and as enjoyable a read as any Grimm tale. I look forward to reading them in their original Icelandic. Next on my list: "The Little Book Of The Icelanders"!
beautiful stories ~ lovely prep for a trip to iceland
Short, sweet and packed with good stories. If you've read about Iceland, traveled to Iceland, or know anyone from Iceland, the legends in this book are totally unique.Best of all, the author gives a brief analysis of the stories explains the historical and cultural context. Totally unlike Grimm's fairytales and those of the European continent, Iceland's literature is a gem.I'm looking forward to reading more of Alda's books.
As an Icelander I enjoyed the way this book was presented and written. Non Icelanders will find this book to be entertaining as well as an insight into the culture.

I've had a fascination with Iceland (as it seems a lot of non-Icelanders do) since taking a short trip there a number of years ago. I follow a few blogs by Icelanders, including Alda Sigmundsdóttir's The Iceland Weather Report, which is how I heard about her Icelandic Folk Legends translation. Anyone who has read Grimm's Fairy Tales knows these kinds of stories aren't just for children, and I really enjoyed the Icelandic twist on this classic form. In her wonderful introduction, Sigmundsdóttir sets up the innate mysteriousness of Iceland's environment and the historical context during which these stories were first repeated to help pass the harsh dark winters. And then there's the stories themselves, which are -- as I'd hoped -- pleasingly unusual. As Sigmundsdóttir explains in the introduction, the broad outlines of some of the stories are familiar. For instance, you might recognize Rumpelstiltskin, warped and refracted through Icelandic eyes though he is. But then there are uniquely Icelandic elements, like tales of the hidden people and a positive stepmother character. And you've probably never read anything quite like "Thorgeir's Bull."

I like to do a lot of research when getting into new types of cooking and found this cookbook to be a great reference for making hot sauces.I bought the Kindle version and will probably buy the paperback version now that I've had a chance to read the book as paging through this type of book on a Kindle is tedious at best. Formatting for the Kindle was done well and I didn't see any obvious problems with the formatting.Instructions for making the hot sauce are clear and easy to follow plus the author uses easy to find ingredients for the most part. A trip to you local Asian or Mexican market may be required for a couple of the recipes.If I have one complaint it's that the book was written before the super hot chiles became easy to find so there are no recipes for making hot sauce with the really hot peppers like ghost and scorpions.Overall, this is a good starter book for your cookbook library.
I like the fact that this book is 100% complete in the information it gives. It tells you how to handle peppers, ie: don't touch your eyes, nose, etc., how & in what kind of containers to store them in, all the many ways to prep peppers, ie: toast, blend, char, etc. They even go over the Christopher Columbus-esque history of the names & locales from which so many varieties of peppers originate. I liked the chart which listed the peppers by name in order of spiciness. It’s a good reference to know what exactly one is getting into with a new pepper. The overall organization of the book was easy to follow since recipes are grouped by region of origin, ie; South America, Louisiana, Asia, etc. There are a decent amount of recipes within each flavor range to keep things interesting. Recipes include not only hot sauces, but also cocktails, full meals & side dishes. My fave so far is the Curried Cauliflower (Asian dish), who knew cauliflower could be so good! As a lover of the spicier tastes in life, I happily recommend this cookbook.
This is a pretty basic book and contains no information I didn't already know on peppers nor any recipes I found particularly interesting. But we are a family who loves hot peppers, and we grow them and make our own sauces and salsa every year. If you are new to cooking with peppers or making hot sauce, you'll probably find this useful. If you are an experienced chile-phile, you won't find anything new here, and I would recommend you keep searching for a better book.
The cover of this book is beautiful, and chiles are so colorful, I would have thought there would be at least a few pictures...but the book is only $5.99, so I guess that makes sense.This book has a great intro on chiles around the world, and my favorite part is the descriptions of each chile, fresh and dried. The descriptions are very helpful and the charts with the scoville unit scale are very helpful. The intro also goes over what constitutes a hot sauce, and what cooking utensils you'll need including nonreactive cookwear and rubber spatulas. Lastly, there are 10 tips for making hot sauce that I found to be very valuable in getting started.The book contains chapters on Latin American, Louisiana style, Asian, West Indies/Caribbean, and "Beyond" hot sauces. First are the Latin-American hot sauces, most of which look great! Of particular interest were the Citrus Chipotle, Pastor salsa with Pineapple, and the Linzano style Costa Rican salsa, which is like a hot steak sauce. The Louisiana Hot Sauce chapter is pretty straightforward, but I'd love to try and make a good homemade version of Frank's, and there is an interesting New Orleans spicy bbq sauce and a spicy cocktail sauce that look a bit different. The next chapter is on Asian sauces, which includes a sriracha recipe I can't wait to try and make.All in all, I can't wait to try to make more of these hot sauces!

I normally don't like spicy foods but I have been exploring. This book is a great way to help me do that because I learned so much in reading the first 3 chapters.I learned all about the history of chilies and peppers. More importantly, I learned which peppers are really hot and what is safe for me to start eating without KILLING MY TASTE BUDS. LOLThe recipes that are included in this book are wonderful. First things first, I didn't expect to find little recipes for foods to eat the hot sauces with. That was awesome. The ease of creating some of these hot sauces is great. I liked that they are grouped by region and I LOVED that there were suggestions about complimentary flavors to cook with.All in all, this is a great book for those that are new to the kitchen, experienced or just love hot sauce or want to do something different. The formatting of this book is excellent and the suggestions are just as useful. I would recommend this book to anyone and I know I will get a lot of use from mine. Excellent book. Although I got the book for free, it's worth the purchase price.

The physical book is of high standard. The layout makes good use of color marks for better orientation, as did "Characters" before. There is an index and a small glossary for the terms used. The artwork is good, but not exceptional (as if I'd care for an artbook :)) and in color. Layout and printing are clear and well ordered, as in the basic books.First off, the book is an expansion on the Basic Characters book and not very useful without it. This is stated on the cover, but they really mean it with this book. There are many references to it, especially in chapter 2 (building powers). I don't expect people without the basic set to buy it, but I like to mention it.I found the book a complex but interesting read. I'd say you need to have a working knowledge of the basic books to make the most of it. My own is somewhat lacking, so I needed quite some time to find how some things are supposed to work. The book allows to build theoretically all (or most) of the various superpowers shown in comics, but it is sometimes not easy to find the starting point (due to my limited knowledge of the Advantages). The examples are pretty helpful in that regard.For those who are going to play GURPS for keeps, I'd say it should almost be part of the core-rules. It is not only useful to represent super powers, but can handle several other genres as well. There is also stuff in it useful for other gaming systems because they deal with general ideas, like what powers/effects are plot-stoppers and need to be taken into account, and the various genre/campaign types.
I got this book because my play group and I really like high powered games. To the tune of several thousand points per character. Of course this book can do more than help you make the most uber awesome godly... ect ect ect. Its strong point is actually its ability to help you build poweres or to adjust them accordingly.If you like a game that is out of the "NORM" then I do really think this is the book for you.

Not just what is your power, but also how does it work and what is its source.A lot of info for fine tuning your setting too. I count this book as one of my GURPS 4E core books.

If you purchased the hands on lab course Learning The Art of Electronics (pub 2016) and want to do all the labs, you will find a very time consuming and tedious task of ordering the parts as there are over 135 distinct part numbers from 9 suppliers. Luckily, at the EEVblog forum, BobsURuncle posted Excel spreadsheets with all the parts organized in a format where they can be uploaded into the parts distributors shopping carts. This will save you hours of your time. Search for "Learning The Art Of Electronics - Parts BOM".
Helpful book for those that might be struggling with some of the content found inside AoE, e.g., beginners, hobbyists, new students, etc. Much improved and expanded since the earlier "student manual" format. Readers will have the opportunity to learn about and build many interesting circuits (assuming they purchase the necessary parts). Like AoE it quickly jumps into conceptualizing circuits from a Thevenin perspective and soon after hops to RC circuits i.e., frequency sensitive voltage dividers, filters, etc. Which is fine for some beginners. But, beginners, hobbyists, etc., that might need a little more mathematical/conceptual hand-holding before jumping headlong into Thevenin equivalence talk, etc., might consider checking out books by Paynter, e.g., Electronics Technology Fundamentals first, Practical Electronics for Inventors second, and then circling back around to this one and AoE.The one major fail would be the significant number of typos, reference errors, etc., liberally sprinkled throughout the book. Readers will need to check out the Errata list on the author's webpage. The book reads like one that was never read by an decent editor. It's quite challenging to see where any publisher editing was done. Readers and purchasers should be able to expect much more from academic book publishers...but alas...it looks like some of them are giving up when it comes to the MOST BASIC form of book publishing quality control i.e., actually reading the book and checking for obvious typos/errata before publishing and sending it out to the masses.Essentially, the book's content is great and will likely be helpful to many. Thumbs up and three stars to the author, he's done a great public and educational service. But, anyone purchasing it will need to carefully review the book's Errata page and make the numerous typo, etc., corrections. i.e., do the work the editors were paid for but clearly didn't do. I purchased this book thinking I would be able to go through the labs one at a time to get a better hands-on understanding of electronics. I have taken a few undergraduate electronics classes where I learned the basics of electronics and got some experience working with breadboards and components in the lab sections. I have also worked through a few examples in the Make books on electronics. I am not an absolute beginner, and this book was very difficult for me. The format is confusing and the author’s writing style is difficult to follow, the labs aren’t clear, and there are many mistakes in the text. This book may be great if you have someone to walk you through, but it is not for beginners who are trying to learn electronics by themselves.Each chapter is broken up into four parts: an introduction (N), lab (L), supplementary section (S), and worked example section (W). So the first thing you need to learn is how to get around the book. It sounds silly, but it adds to the frustration of already trying to learn a difficult subject. When you compound the other flaws then having a confusing layout that is difficult to navigate doesn’t help.The author’s writing style is very odd for a book seemingly aimed at beginners. I have spent more time trying to decipher what the author is asking me to do instead of working on anything hands-on. The book assumes you have skills and knowledge that it does not teach you. The book is funny because the author frames it to being an almost rebellious way to learn electronics with "rules of thumb and reliable 'tricks'' allowing you to "leave the calculator-bound novice engineer in the dust" but then the text is so confusing that you end up not understanding the original concept nor the rules of thumb. The book talks about subjects I even studied before and it goes over my head.The instructions for the labs are difficult to understand. There isn't a breakdown of which parts and tools you need at the beginning of each chapter, so it is confusing. The chapters jump right in and start referring to parts they assume you already have. I think there is a list available on another website that shows the parts needed, but I don’t get why there isn’t a short summary right at the beginning of each lab like in most other LAB books. The book is packed with information, but I still don’t believe the excuse that there wasn’t enough room to include a short list. The instructions, drawings, and goals of the labs should be clear: This is what you will learn, this is what you need this is what you need to do, review. This book doesn’t seem like it was meant to stand alone.As other reviewers said, the book is also full of typos and obvious errors beginning with the first chapter, so you must refer to another secondary document to make sure you aren't memorizing/learning the wrong information.I think this book is more for someone taking a course with a professor there to guide them through it than something a beginner will be able to pick up and be able to complete without the help of other reference books or tutors. I thought it could function as a stand-alone book, but I was mistaken. I'm not sure who is giving these 5-star reviews, but I'm guessing that they are engineers who are already familiar with the material. It probably makes great sense to someone who already mastered the topics covered in the book, but it is practically of no use even to someone who is eager to learn the subject and has some experience building and testing circuits.I've probably had to take 5-6 electronics classes in which I've received all A's, and this book made me feel like I didn't know a thing about electronics. If you are just starting out and trying to learn by yourself, I would recommend you start with another book. If you have access to a professor or tutor or you can take part in a class that walks you through the labs, I'm sure this book is fantastic.
I wish this would have been the text book when I was in college! You can actually sit and read it for pleasure and after 40 years in electronics I haven't found many like that.Expensive but quality is and it is well worth it.
