I couldn’t wait to download the newest book from Hunter. Even though this is a history book, it will intrigue you from the beginning. All the essays are interesting, and you can see Hunter’s influence on the book, but the star is Hunter. She brings to the reader’s attention the conditions of women in the Victorian Era and what many of them had to endure. Her story shows how the early 20th century was shaped for and by women of the Victorian Era. I like that she isn’t critical of the women and men who turned to prostitution and views it as a career for them, and she doesn’t judge their choices. That makes them seem very real and human. The portrayals of Cora Pearl, ‘Skittles’, and Lillie Langtry give extra insight into how sexuality was utilized to advance on a social level. She magically blends the story arc into the unrest of the American Civil War, the sexual history of the South, as well as the settlement of the American Frontier. She has a way of explaining history through art, words, music and even fashion that is enchanting.
I waited with bated breath for this novel to become available in the US, because my friends in the UK were recommending it to me.I absolutely love this book! Each chapter gives you more insight into the past and how different eras viewed sexual practices and sexuality. Having been written by all female authors was an invaluable insight to me, Sexuality and Its Impact on History reads easily, educating and informing in such a charming way it was a pleasure to read. I especially like how Hunter S. Jones ends the book by bringing the reader into the 20th century. Her essay is the longest but gave me insight into how women handled the strict moral code of the Victorian Era, and how that affected the US during the Civil War and beyond. Well done ladies!
This book is not an exhaustive study. There’s a 300+-year gap in this book (from the Tudors to the Victorians) for no valid reason. Prinny’s impact on the sexual mores of the early 19th century is worth an essay in itself. I’m glad I only spent $4 on this.

According to the authors’ description, Sexuality and Its Impact on History: The British Stripped Bare chronicles the pleasures and perils of the flesh, sharing secrets from the days of the Anglo-Saxons, medieval courtly love traditions, diabolical Tudor escapades (including those of Anne Boleyn and Mary Queen of Scots), and the Regency and the Victorian eras. That pretty much sums it up, however, it doesn’t fully convey that this is serious history. The last essay includes America, too… the Gold Rush and the Civil War and the women drawn to “service†the men involved. It also features a bit about the sex trade in New Orleans.Each author presents a segment of history and women whose stories are worth knowing. Along the way, you pick up some fascinating bits about marriage traditions and laws, prostitution and the reasons for it and the life of women in those eras.Heaven help you if you were a royal. The story of Mary, Queen of Scots was very compelling and well done. My heart went out to her, a queen at six days of age tor between those who wanted to take advantage of her claim to England’s throne. That her fellow Scots should betray her and her cousin, Elizabeth, murder her was a horrible end for so promising a life.As an author of historical romance who does extensive research for my stories, I found the book of keen interest. Others who just love reading about history will find it of interest, too. A great addition to the knowledge of women’s lives in history!
Sexuality and It’s Impact on History was a great peek into the history of some very powerful ladies who helped shape the female sexual role throughout British history.Author Haddon’s accounts of Lady Godiva were an eye-opener along with other ladies playing high roles in the royal courts. I enjoyed this collection and will often go back for future reference. These women portrayed were not just sex objects but women of power in their own right.As a writer of erotica, I found valuable information here on the roles in sexuality during those time periods.

I'm in family medicine and encounter oral pathology on a regular basis. This book can't be beat for the purpose of recognition and diagnosis of oral diseases. Excellent photographs and explanations cover the full gamut of pathology likely to be encountered, and arranged according to useful diagnostic schemes - by type, color, location, etc. Even contains an extensive quiz at the end to test your mastery. I liked it so much I bought another one for my dental hygienist wife (who also loves it).
Great book to give an brief overview of oral pathologies. Highly recommend for dental students!
This atlas has the advantage of having sections based on the appearance of the lesions, thus giving you an easy way to look at a group of lesions as you are narrowing down your diagnosis. Each named lesion has a heading for description, etiology, typical visual clues, the differential diagnosis, diagnostic steps, treatment recommendations, suggested follow-up, clincial significance, and other useful clinical information. The photographs are clear and very descriptive.Overall, this is an excellent reference text and it has the advantage of being remarkably reasonably priced considering the rest of the available options. It is also more user friendly and better organized as well. The spiral binding makes it easy to keep the book open while using it, and there are tabbed reference pages for the start of each section; the sections are white lesions, red lesions, ulcerated lesions, blistering/sloughing lesions, pigmented lesions, papillary lesions, and soft tissue enlargements. I returned the atlas that was required for my dental hygiene oral pathology class, and bought this one instead since it is the superior choice.

This book got me into computers and networking. I now work at a Big 4 technology company designing network architectures despite having majored in Psychology. I owe an incredible amount to this book and to this author. I literally thought one day, "I have no idea how the internet works". I looked for books, and I had two choices, either this book, or a $160 textbook like this Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach (7th Edition) that devotes hundreds of pages to different graph-based computer algorithms.This book appeals to two kinds of audiences: ** 1. If you don't know anything about the internet. This book is the best, most easy introduction to get. That's good, because it's also one of the only introductions that's not a textbook. You won't learn everything, because that's a lot of computer science algorithms, but you'll have the best overview from this book. The stories are good, but not excessive like in Malcolm Gladwell's books. ** 2. If you are under 35 and work in technology, no matter how technical your role. This is because so much of the technology you use now is virtual...software defined networking, virtual machines, virtual routers, VLANs, VPCs, AWS, etc. The internet is still a very very physical place, made up of hundreds of thousands of miles or wire, giant internet exchange centers (like the kind Facebook runs out of Nebraska that you'll never see), $80,000 routers made by Brocade that people like Verizon buy, etc. If you want to know how the internet works in the same way that you can open your car and know how everything works (as opposed to just buying a Tesla), get this book.P.S. If you are now pretty technical and want to move beyond the algorithms and other important-but-not-real-world kinds of learning, I suggest you check out Network Warrior: Everything You Need to Know That Wasn't on the CCNA Exam.
I do not agree with some reviewers claiming that the author lacks proper technical insight to write a worthy book about internetworking. It seems to me that it was a deliberate decision not to lean too much on tech details when describing how Internet works. Certainly I could not expect this title to describe inner workings of the TCP/IP suite, or how routers from different networks negotiate routes via BGP. The author, starting with a realization that most people don't notice the existence of networks (Internet is seen only by the content pulled from servers), tried to describe their physicality. Internet is not a nondescript "cloud", it happens to consist of cables. Lots and lots of cables.I like Andrew Blum's remarks on how Internet "tubes" strongly depend on world's geography and existing infrastructure. Cables are placed along roads, the largest Internet exchanges are placed in cities which already were commerce hubs, undersea cables originate and end near ports. Data centers are built in cold places with abundance of cheap electricity. The Internet, commonly perceived as ubiquitous, at its very core (the backbone network) is running over a not-that-large set of routes, governed by a handful of companies. Also appealing to me were the attempts to capture the atmosphere (the nature) of visited buildings and people; probably a bit stereotypical (all network engineers wear hoodies), but enjoyable.The author's penchant for expressing philosophical remarks (mainly on how virtual relates to physical) was annoying a few times but, OTOH, they make it a book which tries not only to convey Internet's architecture, but also its idea. A pleasant read, IMHO even for die-hard network specialists.
I'm an engineer and have always been interested in networking technology. When I heard an interview with author Andrew Blum regarding this book, on NPR, I immediately decided to buy and read it. The book is interesting and insightful in parts, but I found it a bit superficial and was somewhat disappointed with the superficiality of most of it. I guess I was expecting something more like Malcolm Gladwell's quantitative analyses of many of the topics that he writes about, but instead this book is mostly a travelogue of the author going around and just looking at various internet exchange points and data centers.There were two chapters that were really great: one concerned Andrew Blum's meeting with Leonard Kleinrock, who in some ways "founded" the Internet when he established the first inter-network link in the original Arpanet. Hearing one of the Internet's founders explain all the things he did and didn't envision for it was fascinating.The most interesting chapter is the second-to-last, in which the author observes the laying of an undersea fiber-optic cable in Portugal, which will connect it to the Azores and Africa. The nitty-gritty details of forming the physical interconnections between distant points are described here in an up-close way that I found far more satisfying than the detached, tourist-like point of view that the author takes in most of the book.

I've read a dozen books on Film and Video Editing. There are a plethora of great reads, but to me, none of them have captured multiple Editors voices and gone into the nitty gritty like "Art of the Cut" has; it's AMAZING!Walter Murch's "In the Blink of an Eye" has always been a seminal book on the subject (And that book is still required reading for editors), but in my opinion, Steve Hullfish has made something even more informative and useful to Editors. Hearing how Emmy and Academy Award winning Editors think about every part of their process is absolutely priceless.I can't recommend this book enough, and I will certainly be reading it again and again throughout my career.

I really like the wide range of options from the numerous WODs. You won't get bored. This is a great book for people who already know what they are doing in a gym.
It's okay.
I almost never write reviews and was looking forward to using this book for my training. Never came at all. Fail.
