I found this at library in 2012. Some of the stories stuck with me and had to borrow it again. Finally realized I could just buy it, read or look at images any time I want. The watercolor illustrations are delightful. Great book, no matter your age.
I searched for a book for our family's St. Patrick's Day celebration and found this. It is perfect for gathering the family together and delving into Irish folklore, fairy tales and more. I wanted a book that my kids, then six and ten, could enjoy--not too dark, as some Irish storybooks can be, but not babyish either.We are also fans of David McPhail's work and he truly brings the stories to life with his illustrations.This is highly recommended to families interested in all things Irish!

After 5 years as an Aperture user, I finally had the motivation to leave after deciding that Apple's decision to no longer support it increased the likelihood that I'd one day encounter big problems with my entire photo library. Still, I was very nervous about moving to Lightroom 6 and learning entirely new software.At first glance, Victoria Bampton's book is a bit intimidating, coming in at nearly 600 total pages. My first concern was moving my entire managed Aperture library to LR6, and I was at first frustrated finding that the bound volume did NOT contain instructions for doing so. A note on one of the "Import" chapter pages referred me to Appendix page A-28 for more information, but the appendices are NOT included in the printed copy; they are, however, available for download off of Victoria's website. So my first advice for Aperture users in a similar situation is to follow instructions to register the book with Victoria, take some time to explore the Members Area to see what's available there, and then carefully follow the Appendix C instructions for moving your Aperture library.For a LR rookie like myself, the "Fast Track" feature was an absolute necessity to learn the basics of importing, organizing, and developing (editing) photos without getting lost in the detail. Clearly marked arrows directed me to the essential, basic instructions for each topic, leaving more complex details for later study. The text material was clearly written. Some pages had to be read very carefully because of the amount of text, examples, and highlighted "tip" boxes included.My method for covering a topic -- for example, learning the Basic Development panel -- was to read a short section then use some of my own photos to practice the steps that I just covered. (There was no shortage of photos to use, because as Bampton and many other writers have cautioned, Aperture adjustments/edits do NOT carry over into LR6.)I supplemented selected topics with free videos from unrelated LR experts, usually Julianne Kost's videos. Brampton's book can easily stand on it's own for teaching LR6, but for me using both a text and videos is best for learning this type of material. Sometimes I read first, followed by a video on the subject, and sometimes I reversed the order. When I purchased Bampton's book, I also purchased Tony Northrup's "Adobe Lightroom6/CC" video book. I began using both sources, but quickly found that Bampton's book was much easier from which to learn. Most of Northrup's videos were made with earlier versions of LR and NOT at the same time as the 2015 edition of his book; accordingly, I often had difficulty finding the video segments that corresponded to a chapter's material that I was reading. Also, some topics/tips I thought were significant were either skipped or covered only superficially in the Northrup text and videos. Though I will keep Northrup's book around to review material on specific topics, my go-to source for learning more about LR6 will continue to be Bampton's book.Had I not had to jump through so many hoops (see 2nd paragraph above) to find the instructions for moving my Aperture library into LR6, which for me was nerve-wracking just thinking about it, I would have rated this a 5-star book.
The information in this book may be excellent, but the Kindle version is very difficult to navigate (I use the Kindle for iPad app). Although the Amazon "Look Inside" feature clearly shows a table of contents in the paperback version, it seems there's no table of contents in the Kindle edition. This means you can't navigate directly to the subject you want. I suppose that's no problem if you choose to read the book cover-to-cover, but it's a serious flaw in a reference book. It turns out there is an index, but it took me a while to stumble on it, since there's no table of contents to link me to it. Once I found the index, I tried to bookmark it, but I can't navigate back to my bookmark in this Kindle book (as I can in others). The author mentions in her introduction that the book is also available in PDF format, so I thought that might be a better option if it includes a table of contents. With that in mind, I went to her web site to see if she offers a discount to buyers of one format who decide they also want another format. It turns out that if you buy/download the Kindle version directly from her site (at the same price as Amazon), you also get the PDF and epub versions for free. But, if you buy/download the Kindle version from Amazon like I did, your only option is to buy another format at full price. As I said, the information may be great but, frankly, I'll never know because it's too difficult to find in the Kindle book. And, of course, the difference in purchase options is downright annoying. My advice is to buy the paperback edition or, if you prefer an e-book format, purchase it directly from the author's web site.Update 6/14/17: After returning the Kindle edition to Amazon (they accept Kindle returns within one week of purchase), I purchased the paperback edition from Amazon. Once it arrived, I went to the author's web site and registered the book to become a "premium member" on her site. Within a day she e-mailed to confirm my membership. This allowed me to login at her website and download the PDF, ePub, and Kindle versions for free. I downloaded and installed the ePub edition to my iPad and it works fine, complete with a table of contents.Now that I've had some time with the book in both paperback and ePub forms, I must agree with other reviewers that the content is excellent. She covers each topic thoroughly and clearly, with plenty of illustrations. I've already uncovered information I searched for in vain in other Lightroom books and videos. I wouldn't use this book to learn Lightroom (I recommend Laura Shoe's video series for that), but it's the most in-depth reference I've come across.Because the content is so good and the ePub version works fine on my iPad, I'm upgrading my rating from 3 to 4 stars. I still can't give it 5 stars, but only because of the problems and inconvenience I experienced with the Kindle edition.
I purchased this book after returning Scott Kelby's "How do I do that in Lightroom ..." This book has both a Fast Track collection of information for those who are already familiar with Lightroom or who are just starting to organize a small collection, as well as in-depth explanations about the structure of the program. I needed the latter, because I already had 19,000 photos spanning 16 years, and I wanted to know what choices to make during the importation process to minimize the down-stream effort to organize them. As soon as I received the program, I immediately imported all of my photos and began attaching keywords (wrong!). However, after reading the chapter on importing and understanding the consequences of my initial choices (copy vs. add, renaming of files, etc.), I ended up clearing out the catalog and re-importing all of my photos. All of the video examples on the Lightroom web site demonstrate techniques on small collections of newly-imported photos. They don't address the implications of importing large collections that may contain duplicates scattered across many file folders. I highly recommend this book if you are just starting with Lightroom or if you want to minimize the work of organizing a large collection of photos. I also found this book useable in the Kindle form, which was not the case with the other book.

Shiva and Shakti are one.However, I am just another apparent, relative traveler on this rock around the sun, so...see for yourself and don't put too much stock in what I or anyone else says. Reads more like the Tao Te Ching (which I do love.) This is less useful if you're looking for or needing some 'direction' or mental understandings, but is helpful for just pointing directly. The companion book "Conversation with Truth" is excellent to fill that other side of it out.
This excellent little book says just what it needs to say and nothing more. Nicely done. If only more authors would be so direct, unadorned, and minimalist in their approach! Thank you. I have to start by saying that I loved the previous book and was so excited for this one because Felicity was such a fun part of the Gentleman's Guide and I couldn't wait to see more of her and follow her on her journey. But unfortunately, this one just didn't have the same amount of of excitement and charm as the first.The biggest problem, it seemed to me, was Felicity herself and her inner monologue. It was just so repetitive. She wants to be a doctor. And she's a woman living in a man's world. We get it. So much of it just seemed to be hitting us over the head with her situation. We know. We live in this world too and don't need to be reminded over and over again that men are in charge and determine what we're allowed to do. I was hoping for more of an empowering character rather than someone whining all the time. But I do understand how frustrating her world is so there is that, I guess. But overall, I wanted her to take charge and so much of this book just seemed to be her either running from something or following someone else. She didn't ever really seem to be the one leading. And I was a little sad about that.We also seemed to lose some of her sass from the first book with being in her head so much. It still came out quite a bit when Monty and Percy were around, so those turned out to be some of the best scenes. But I also really enjoyed the ones with Sim and Joanna. Sim added a nice touch of adventure and danger and recklessness while Joanna gave us both a sense of Felicity's past as well as a balance to her idea of the "modern woman". Felicity has a built in belief that women who want a traditional role in life of motherhood and care about society and how they dress, etc. are somehow less than those who don't. It was nice to see Joanna give Felicity some of her own medicine and show her that women can be both mothers and traditional and still interesting and important. Plus, I love a book with female friendships and this had both new and old.One last thing, there isn't any romance and this book and I thougth the way Felicity explained her views on love and romance were done really well. She never does come outright and call herself asexual but those terms certainly didn't exist back then so it would be a little out of place. But she is firm in her belief that she doesn't want and doesn't need a romance or sexual relationship and I think this representation is going to be important to a lot of people. It's almost impossible to find YA books where the MC isn't involved or actively looking for a relationship so I think getting this out there in a way that explains the MCs feelings quite well is important.Overall, I enjoyed this book for it's relationships and representation but I didn't love it nearly as much as the first. I had hoped for more from Felicity and a little less repetition from her inner monologue. I still hope to read more from Mackenzi Lee!!
I waited for this book for months. The Gentleman's Guide was my absolute favorite, and Felicity's quick wit and relatable awkwardness were central to my love for that book. I was worried that The Lady's Guide wouldn't be as good, but thus far, I am extremely pleased. In many classes today I was told by teachers to stop reading under my desk. I couldn't put it down! So happy to be seeing women in historical settings standing up for themselves rather than let themselves be pushed around because that's "all they know". Mackenzie Lee is a magnificent author.
I’m a huge fan of the first book in this series, and I was so excited to read this sequel that I chucked aside my current read, tore through the mail packaging of this one and started reading it immediately upon arriving home from work the day it released completely neglecting my poor husband for the rest of the day. Totally worth it.Like the first book, this one was a lot of fun. I appreciated Felicity as our main protagonist in this one. I didn’t always love her in the first book, at times thinking she was being a bit hard on Monty, and I have to say that sometimes I didn’t like her here either but…Felicity is kind of like a porcupine. She’s a bit prickly and she doesn’t always think before acting, but this does lead her into some interesting territory on occasion. Plus, seeing everything from her point of view really gave me new perspective on her. I’m much better able to understand the relationship between her and her brother, how much she cares for him even when she’s exasperated, disappointed, or resentful toward him.Felicity, unlike her brother Monty, is extremely hard working. She knows that she’s going to be passed up for the work she wants to do, becoming a doctor, so she has to work two or three times as hard just to try and get her foot into the door. It’s natural that she would feel some resentment toward her brother, who she feels has squandered so much opportunity in life, opportunity she would love to have but doesn’t just because of her sex. I love Felicity’s tenacity in going after her dream, although at times it does feel like she’s making some rash decisions in order to achieve her goal, not thinking about the cost of those decisions. Just like her brother, Felicity definitely has some flaws, and these aspects of her character hinder her at times. This provides a great opportunity for us to see some character growth, something this author excels at.Throughout the story we’re introduced to some new characters. First we meet Sim, a young woman pirate who has taken up with the crew of their former pirate friends from the first book. She’s a bit mysterious at first and it takes Felicity, and us as readers, a little while to find out more about her. Once I did get to know her better, I couldn’t help but love her. She’s also a woman in a man’s world, so there’s a lot of common ground between her and Felicity, despite all their differences. We also meet Johanna, Felicity’s best friend growing up. We learn how close they used to be and eventually we learn what drove them apart. Mackenzi Lee is great at writing characters and letting them drive her stories, and as much as I loved Gentleman’s Guide, I feel like this is a huge step up. I love how we explore these characters and what they want out of life. Each of them have very specific dreams and obstacles. Without giving a lot away, I love that these characters exist as who they are. And as much as I did love Felicity, I think Johanna might actually be my favorite character of the three main protagonists, because of some of the things she says to Felicity when explaining how their friendship fell apart.The pacing of the story was great and the prose was strong. I rarely find myself wanting to tag quotes in books but there are definitely passages where I was like ‘man, that’s deep, I should probably quote that in my review’.“I don’t want to spend the rest of my life smelling sugar. I don’t want pastry beneath my fingernails and a man content with the hand life has dealt him and my heart a hungry, wild creature savaging me from the inside out.â€Well dang, Felicity. Tell me how you really feel. â¤Honestly, I don’t really have much negative to say about this book. The fantasy element was more of a plot device, similar to the first book, but I feel like it was incorporated a little bit better into the story this time around. But really that’s negligible to the story as a whole.I really loved this one, it definitely lived up to my expectations. 5/5 stars.
I haven't read a series out of order in years, but I jumped at a book about a young woman scientist much faster than I did at book one, which at the time of its release seemed merely like yet another gay YA novel written by a woman. Now I'm even more excited to read The Gentlemen's Guide, as The Lady's Guide was phenomenal. Lee's prose is extremely well-crafted, and her wonderful mixture of humor, friendship, adventure, and queerness was just the best cocktail for a good tale. Despite falling into a different genre, this felt like a feminist Lord of the Rings to me; it gave me that same delicious two-pals-on-a-quest vibe that I'm always hungry for. I was disappointed when it ended, and I already want there to be a third Montague Siblings book. Surely there's always a third sibling no one knows about? <3
