It is a layman’s guide to the politics, early science, and history of forensic medicine and a great tribute to those whose intelligence and hard work lead us to where we are today. The reader will enjoy the many human interest cases discussed that give the book a fascinating personal touch. This book is for those who like science, history and page turning nonfiction.
If you expect a dense scientific text or will be disappointed that some of the cases are accidental deaths and not murder, don't read. However, if like me you enjoy a bit of history, a bit of science, a lot of morbid investigation, and the triumphant underdog story of two luminary forensic examiners against the backdrop of Prohibition, the book is fascinating and morbidly fun.The title "Poisoner's Handbook" belies the book's true focus, the two amazing men at the center of each of the public histories of the poisons Blum writes about: chloroform, arsenic, cyanide, mercury, carbon monoxide, radium, ethyl and methyl alcohols, and thallium.Charles Norris, first Chief Medical Examiner of NYC, and his chief toxicologist, Alexander Gettler were, according to Blum, almost solely responsible for modernizing forensic science in the United States. Before Norris' appointment, the office of coroner required no medical training, and death certificates were often incomplete or falsified for bribes if they were filled out at all. Norris and Gettler spent their careers making forensics a rigorous study, and as if that weren't enough, were hugely influential crusaders for regulation of toxic substances, and for the repeal of Prohibition, which engendered a slew of deadly bootleg concoctions, including the industrial wood grain alcohol that the government endeavored to make more poisonous than it already was, knowing that it would be imbibed by prohibition breakers.Although the writing was snappy and fast-faced, Blum had little work to do to create drama; Norris and Gettler's heroic efforts to identify the effects of these poisons on the body in many cases for the very first time, and the huge failure that was the Prohibition largely did her work for her. I was riveted. I'm not sure why there isn't yet a forensic TV drama about the two men and the poisons they studied.
The Poisoner’s Handbook is a captivating blend of 1920’s crime stories and the chemistry that made it all possible.Blum’s book is easy to read (though it assumes an intelligent reader), the chemistry is never overwhelming, and the two gentlemen that she chose to follow throughout the chemical boom of the Roaring 20’s led fascinating jobs filled with mystery, murder, death, ground brains and Bunsen burners. And at under 300 pages, it is just the right length.I often use non-fiction books such as this to cleanse my palate (as it were) if I’ve had a bit too much fantasy and SciFi. This book did the trick.Also, reading the anecdotes in this book makes me want to quit my job and write murder mysteries because there are just so many sneaky ways of killing people! Fortunately, all y’all are safe - I very nearly failed junior Chemistry in high school, and sometimes, even measuring out teaspoons of coffee grounds in too much chemistry for me. I guess I’ll need to hire an evil genius assistant...
I absolutely loved this book. It is a highly readable account of the rise of forensic medicine and toxicology in the United States, focusing on the Bellevue lab in New York City. The book talks about a number of homicides (or, in some cases, accidents that were believed to be homicides) that resulted from poisonous chemicals. There are chapters on arsenic, cyanide, carbon monoxide, radium, thallium, etc. Some of the compounds that the author discusses were known to be poisons (like arsenic and cyanide, for example), whereas some were new compounds, discovered in the first third of the twentieth century, that were not discovered to be poisonous until ill effects were reported.The book is not just about crime or homicidal maniacs who use poison as their weapon of choice. It is also about changing technologies, corporate greed, and egregious misuse of chemical compounds that borders on being comical to the modern reader. (Radium health tonics. Blearghhh.)The book is well written (the crisp, non-academic writing is very refreshing - unlike the radium health tonics) and does not get overly bogged down in scientific terms. The author provides enough medical and scientific background to be relevant, but she presents it in layman's terms. I love reading about the periodic table, but since I am not a scientist, I find that sometimes I get lost when there is too much detail. That is not the case here. I highly recommend this book.
I thought this book read like a novel. I had bought it as a reference, and have used it as such, but read it from cover to cover. I've noted there are critiques that say some of the science is incorrect, so I suppose I'd check before I used a specific point in your own novel. I would not let the criticism deter you from buying it. The discussion of alcohol poisoning during Prohibition is enough reason to read this. I don't mention my own books in a review of others,' but in this case it's a compliment to Ms. Blum. Her Prohibition discussion helped me a lot as I wrote Rekindling Motives. Rekindling Motives (Jolie Gentil Cozy Mystery Series Book 2) I recommend this book for anyone who wants a broad overview of the topic.

I did a little bit of research at the beginning of the year on the blood type diet after a friend of mine mentioned it to me. I was having all kinds of issues from anxiety, acid reflex, digestion issues, and other health problems. These issues came on all of the sudden as I previously would eat healthy for my blood type without knowing it. I suddenly changed my diet and venturing into other foods. I began to slowly poisoning my body without realizing it until my body started acting all kinds of crazy. After reading this book it began to make sense and became clear to me to go back to my old eating habits. I am now starting to feel better just after a few days. I will buy Dr. Adamo's other books as there are other blood types in my household
Will probably work for many typ o people. I suggest really knowing your own body. He insists that type o people have problems getting their blood to clot. I have problems keeping mine from clotting. So I suggest a caveat to any so called health guru.
I found that the book was very small; more like a booklet. However, the information was interesting. It seems the foods I should be eating were some of my favorites anyway. I discovered in order to follow the diet plan, not surprisingly, I will have to modify and eliminate some foods, and drinks like some citrus, grains, and coffee! That was another interesting change that I found myself doing just recently: limiting coffee and drinking more green tea, which the diet recommends! That was really an "aha!" moment. It seemed that my body was "craving" green tea rather than coffee. It was great to discover that green tea is the better choice! I look forward to improved health, energy, and less digestive issues that the diet plan promises!
Love this condensed version of the book! I have removed certain foods from my diet and the results have been really good. I have lost a few pounds, no more bloating and burping, etc. Friends have noticed a difference in me. I suggest that you try the book based on your blood type if you want to improve your life. Getting ready to order the cookbook based on blood type for myself and a friend has asked that I order her a copy of the food beverage and supplement book based on her blood type.
Great book. I actually ordered two. I finally see why I could never lose weight, despite being health conscious and working out my weight sometimes ballooned or I could not lose. I learned I was eating all the foods my blood type rejected. I once ate yogurt and would be very ill..turns out diary is not good for 0 negative. I am having digestive woes and after reading this book I discovered out 75% of the foods I thought was healthy was not beneficial for my blood type!If you are unable to lose weight or having digestive issues read this book: it might help!

Best thing I have ever done for myself. Blood sugars are dropping. Losing weight without exercise. Feel better mentally and physically. It is a little hard to give up my favorite foods. I cheat a little, but this lifestyle change is worth it. Acid Reflux GONE! Stopped taking medication for Acid Reflux and now I don't have to. Have cut my insulin amounts in half. Still lowering it everyday. Best thing ever.

If I wanted to conquer a country and become its prince, the first thing I’d need to know is how to get my own personal military. I didn’t find that information in this book. It seems to have been written for men who already have their own personal militaries. Yet most of the advice is about conquest. If they have their own personal militaries, why wouldn’t they already be experts in conquest?Someone who is already a prince would need to know about what to do after the conquest. He needs to know how to deal with his subjects and how to deal with other rulers without going to war. There should have been an entire chapter on diplomacy and international trade. The alternative to these things is destroying your own principality with perpetual war. Along these lines, after Machiavelli wrote THE PRINCE and before he published it, he wrote a small work entitled “The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca†that illustrated the importance of caution and diplomacy instead of endless conquests. The key was that princes should keep the limitations of their successors in mind when planning military campaigns. After all, princes die young sometimes.Nothing clear is presented about how a prince should deal with his subjects. A prince might need to kill them, but should leave their property and women alone. He should disarm them so they can’t overthrow him. But what if the principality is being invaded and he needs armed subjects to help him fight the invaders? Liberality is the quickest way to be despised by the subjects, but they should be given festivals and spectacles. It’s confusing and I may have missed it, but he provides no historical examples of princes that prevented unrest and those who failed to do so.What’s also confusing is what everyone focuses on when they talk about this book. I'm referring to the morality of the prince. Must he have a moral duty, breaking conventional rules only when they interfere with this duty? Or is it permissible for him to be a beast who only cares about his own pleasure and glory? I’m not sure what this book really says about that.However, THE PRINCE is a valuable early work of political science. The method is pretty good. Ideas are developed from axioms of human nature, then backed up with historical examples. It’s worth reading.2.8 stars
I often heard of this book but never read it and after reading it I am sorry I didn't pick it up sooner. Some people think that the book is cruel and calculating, but I think it is very insightful of how governments take over countries and keep their citizens in line. Some times it means killing the old administration (literally) and other times it means employing citizens in new territories that you are trying to take over. The writing wasn't convoluted at all. It was very clear and well written. This is definitely a book you can read over and over again.
A great thesis worth multiple readings. This collection of essays and letters are one man's fascinating take on politics and war. The only thing which takes away from the overall work are the appendices which try to spoon-feed conclusions as opposed to providing context for the greater work.To be able to read and understand this book correctly, you must be prepared to spend some time understanding the politics and conflicts of the time. That being said, it's the only way to do it and be able to grasp more than surface conclusions. Being able to read and understand the work changed my understanding of not just politics, but also my interactions with different groups both socially and in my work life.
The idea of "reviewing" this is more than a little silly -- it's arguably the most influential non-religious work of all time -- but I thought a few comments & historical notes might still be worthwhile."The Prince" was essentially the first work of political realism in Western thought -- the first work of Western political philosophy that concerned itself not with the ideal government (as Plato had done in his _Republic_) but with the practical realities of getting and holding power. To describe the impact and influence of that willingness, that first notion that conventional morality might not be the best guide to success, would be as impossible a task as trying to summarize the influence of Galileo. Napoleon is rumored to have written extensive annotations to this book; Stalin allegedly kept a copy on his nightstand. Half of Shakespeare's villains (Iago, Richard III, etc.) derive their character in whole or part from this text.Most of this book is extraordinarily controversial, even today, yet still fundamentally difficult to argue against; there's a reason the Catholic Church kept it on the _Index Librorum Prohibitorum_ for centuries. If you're looking for food for thought, it's here.This particular kindle edition is fairly good; the text is cleanly presented with few typographical or scanning errors, and the translator has clearly made a significant effort to present the text as accurately as possible in a modern translation, with several footnotes detailing possible alternate translations of particular words, etc. In addition to the text of _The Prince_, this edition also includes two shorter historical works by Machiavelli, "Descriptions of the Methods Adopted by the Duke Valentino When Murdering Vitellozzo Vitelli, Oliverotto da Fermo, the Signor Pagolo, and the Duke di Gravina Orsini," and "The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca." ("Duke Valentino" is an alternate name for Cesare Borgia). Both additional texts are, in essence, case studies of how contemporary historical figures achieved success by acting according to the precepts which Machiavelli outlines in the main body of the text, and as such are very useful and interesting companion reads.As a final note, if anyone has recommendations for histories of Italy in this time period, please link me to them in a comment -- after reading this, I want to read more about the era. Written in 2009 before southern Sudan became the separate country of South Sudan, we meet Michele Perry starting a 'work' in Yei - the far recesses of the bush, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.Dust is everywhere as are guns and other dangers. There is no running water and very little privacy. One of Michele's first introductions or should I say inductions to life in Sudan was fried termites. The children of the compound watched with interest to see if their white mama would take the challenge! She did!Born without her left hip, leg and kidney never seemed to stop Michele from accomplishing an amazing amount. She also shares a little of her history, where her mission all started and how she ended up in Sudan in 2006.A well-written, easy to read book that will also challenge you. No, it is not a book telling everyone that they should be in the remotest parts of the world as a missionary. It is a book that shows how the mission field is truly everywhere and the greatest gift you can give is LOVE! Michele has learned what it is to truly love people no matter what situation they are in. She has also learned how to love her Jesus asking Him what He is doing each day and then joining him! She shares the story of Benia who was brought to them as a very troubled 4 month old. As Michele asked the Lord to show her how to help Benia, she knew He was telling her to just love her. She and others gave up 3 weeks of sleep to love on this little baby until LOVE broke through and Benia had peace. Hers is not the only story in this book.Although Michele is no longer in South Sudan due to health issues, the work that she helped to start continues. Read this book and be INSPIRED! EXCELLENT!
Rarely do I read a book twice. This book is an exception! It not only is a story of a brave woman and her desire to love like Jesus, and go where He sends you, but it's filled with proverbs of wisdom and stories with lessons. It's a treasure with deep jewels buried in the dirt of Sudan to be uncovered in the lives of suffering people. The people have names and each has a story. Michelle Perry weaves many of their stories into her story, the story of love. Love the masses by loving the one, she states. Face them with your face. That's the face of love that they see.
It was a great book and will touch your heart. God is doing great things thru His body using all of in different ways but I have such a heart for those that serve on the mission field, they truly give their all laying down everything down to serve.
Michelle Perry's account of the intimate experience she has had with the Lord is eye opening and if you read this book you can not help but be impacted by her account. Truly love as Jesus Christ loved is the answer to our Christian walk. I encourage you to read this book and pray that the Lord will work in your life as he as so beautifully done in Michelle's life. He will if you surrender to him. I am also involved in a Christian ministry, Freedom Outreach International, that is working in Lietnhom, South Sudan and serving these people is a truly rewarding experience. I initially read the book to gain insight to others serving the Lord in South Sudan, but I quickly learned that while the setting for the book is South Sudan, the book is not about South Sudan but about loving as Jesus Christ does.I have read other reviews about "Love has a Face" and I am disappointed to see people offer negative posts because of Michelle's stories of miracles that not only bring healing but also provision and deliverence. Those that have religion find it difficult if not impossible to accept and believe these stories but those of us the have a true and intimate relationship with the lord realize that Michelle's experience only confirms God's Holy Scriptures. I have been blessed to see many of the same type of miracles of healing and deliverence take place not only in Africa but here as well. Please remember without faith it is impossible to please God, but through Jesus Christ all things are possible. The same Holy Spirit promised to those in the Book of Acts is available to each and every believer. Seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit and you will see miracles just like Michelle Perry. Take this wonderful lesson of intimacy with God and show the Love of Jesus to a world in need. Thank you Michelle, I will pray that you and your ministry will be highly favored by the Lord.
Be prepared to be broken, challenged, and compelled deeper into God's heart as you read this book. It is an easy read, but needs time to sink into the heart and spirit of each reader. As a fellow missionary I can say that this book is the cry of our Heavenly Dad's heart to this generation. God is waiting for missionaries of love to say yes and be released into their destiny. This book is the testimony of one of those "missionaries of love" that said "YES" to God's purpose in a radical way. What an inspiring, empowering and compelling book! Readers beware: this book will demand a decision to be made on your part to radically say yes to God's heart!

She is the living proof that whenever our Father undertakes to accomplish His purpose on the planet, He does it through a single soul who quietly rests and rejoices in His care (Philip Keller).

Michelle Perry is humility personified! Rarely does she point to herself. She leads us straight to Jesus for us to encounter for ourselves the Mighty Lord she loves and serves.I can hardly recommend this book more highly ; in fact, I have read it slowly ,as part of my own Daily Quiet Time...I have been enriched and touched in my deepest place. I want everyone I know to have a chance to experience Him in a new way , walking into one of the darkest places on earth with one of His Brightest lights, Michelle Perry.Read this book, share it with others and rejoice that there are people in this day and time who truly follow the Father's call on their life!!
