My husband and I fell in love with DK (especially the Smithsonian line) during a trip to the Smithsonian museums. The books are filled with an immense amount of information which is presented in a fascinating, readable way. Of course the author couldn't include absolutely every single detail about the subject at hand, but they still did a wonderful job. The photos are gorgeous and a perfect complement to the information being presented. The books themselves have sturdy binding and stout construction.
First of all, DK Motorbooks are beautiful books which superbly treat their subjects! I wanted a decent tome which treated The American Revolution and I purchased this volume with confidence that it would meet my expectations. Well it didn't meet my expectations; it exceeded them! I thought I knew just about everything about the Revolutionary War but this superb book proved me wrong! I learned a great deal from this book and its images and graphics! I highly recommend this book to any American History enthusiast!
This is the best "stand-alone" one volume summary of the American Revolution I have ever seen. Expertly written and lavishly illustrated, this book has a strong appeal to readers of all ages and knowledge of the American Revolution. A material omission in my opinion is a lack of maps showing troop positions and movements for the various battles. It would add so much to the narrative.

I've been a self-taught guitar player for 50 years. As such, my approach has been to learn the chords of a song and then play them. But my knowledge pretty much ended there, and I needed something to get me to the next level. I tried numerous online courses and videos, and while some were interesting, they all seemed to jump into picking exercises, CAGED shapes, and jumped all around the topic of guitar playing.It seems there are two concepts that every guitar player needs to know if they want to progress with the instrument: The fretboard and the root, third and fifth of every scale. This book is focused on the first concept only, and as such, does an admirable job. Too many instructors seem to pass quickly over knowledge of the fingerboard and the exercises needed to learn it. That's a shame. Being able to immediately find a note, means it's easy to transpose chords to fit.I purchased many guitar books (a lot from Amazon!) that I read a bit and then put aside. This one I read from cover to cover, and am applying its exercises and mnemonics. This one has earned a place near my guitar!

This has always been a stumbling block for me when trying to play with advanced performers. This book helped me quickly realize and understand patterns where so many others have left me scratching my head.
I've been playing guitar by ear for a long time. Whenever I get together with my buddies to jam they throw around keys changes and I cannot keep up. I have so many books on guitar it's ridiculous. When I bought this book I thought it would be a stupid gimmick. I bought it to add to my collection of difficult to follow guitar instruction books. SURPRISE!!! It was easy to follow, it made sense, and with a bit of practice, I am able to name every note on the fretboard!! Kudos to the author! It's as if guitarhead wrote this book for me. The games and tricks are what did it for me.
The memory aids were a big help to memorizing the Low E, high E, and the A string. Using the "L Rule" and the "Claw" to teach the G and the D strings, pure genius. My guitar teacher told me to pay attention to patterns but never explained what that meant. This book does exactly that!!! Chapter 8 is loaded with patterns if you know what to look for, and now I do thanks to this book. Simply the best guitar book I have purchased.
Memorization is a stretch. The book is based on relationships between strings and octaves. So after reading the book and doing the exercises, you’ll be able to derive any note on the fretboard, but not necessarily instantly know it.Still gave the book 4 stars as I learned some interval relationships / patterns that I didn’t previously know. And understanding intervals / patterns between strings is still important for playing chords, melodies, and solos, so even if it doesn’t deliver on memorization, the material is still useful and definitely worth the price.
The content of this little book delivers on the promise of its title. Easy to follow and well thought through. Yes, there are typos and the grammar could be better. I wasn't looking for a text on grammar. One note: the reverse L position is a 3-string jump, not 2.

And though this book is thorough in what it does explain no-one will ever 'know' the fretboard in 24 hours and be capable of playing at any tempo at any position on the neck. I could no doubt memorize the piano keyboard but that wouldn't make me a pianist. You would be better prepared for what lies ahead if encouraged to get used to a routine of daily practice for the guitar is a lifetimes endeavor, especially if you aspire to play professionally, Segovia for instance practiced 8 hours a day even at 75. I expected more from this book than just note memorization and a brief reference to interval relationships. But the information is well presented for what it is so no doubt other books will address what this one didn't as the development of your playing skills and the application of this knowledge will have to come from elsewhere.

I'm currently a Heald Business College student and glad tha I decided to purchse this book over the book sold in our bookstore. The tabs make it easy to locate the specific code; however, the pages are very fragile. Other then that, I'm glad I chose to make this purchase. One more thing, the book was delivered prior to it's ETA, so I was glad that it came sooner than expected. GOOD CHOICE!
Helped prepare my mother for her CPT test in her additional night classes, she said it helped immensely.She isn't the greatest with English and reading/following along, but she seemed to have no issue with this.
I just don't like that it is in spiral bound because it wears easily due of vigorous page flipping from looking the right procedure code.

For example, Floor Systems. Then he shows wood joists and explains the span ranges for wood joists; such as, 2 x 6 up to ten feet. Helpful hints are included, "Rule of thumb for estimating joist depth: span/ 16," and "Joist deflection should not to exceed 1/360 th of span." (There may have been some translation problems in that example).Thus, it is a book filled with facts about construction. Critical facts that anyone in the construction industry must know. It is not a book to be read like a school text or encyclopedia. It is much more like a dictionary or reference book with all the facts gathered together in sections. If you were looking for the construction standards for roofing you would consult the Roof Systems section. Almost everything concerning frame construction is covered with exacting diagrams for every system.This is not is a book telling someone how to do something. A construction manager would find the book of little value. An architect would use this as a reference manual, but someone learning how to build a wall would find only momentary items of interest. It is not a how to manual in any fashion. It shows drawings of walls and gives critical information about measurements and requirements of good construction, but whether toenailing or nailing from the opposite side of the 2x4 is better isn't there. What hammer to pick for the nailing job will not be found in this book. Some of the subchapters are really just overviews of the major concerns, such as the site layout section. It is very brief.One thing I find missing is recommendations for improving construction techniques or practices. In the section on high rise structures nothing is said about what method is better or how evolving materials might make certain construction techniques better than others. The obsolescence of some materials isn't discussed. Of course, only modern structures are covered. No comparisons are made with 1890 skyscrapers.Being a reference book, in my opinion, the index should be massively expanded. The index is 10 pages long. While 10 pages might seem like a large index the book itself is large and the index does not reflect the depth of information available in the book. The main Table of Contents needs to be expanded far beyond what it is now. While it is an efficient system unless one is familiar with it quoting sections to people unfamiliar with the concept leads to confusion. Thus, "see page 5.11" comes across as see page 511 (five hundred and eleven) to the initiated.Thus, while the illustrations are outstanding and the text terse but effective, more effort is needed to make finding things in the book easier. People familiar with construction will know adobe construction is found under walls, but someone unfamiliar with the business would not.AD2
I have been searching for books that guide the reader through the design of an ideal home. I purchased BUILDING CONSTRUCTION ILLUSTRATED, by Francis Ching, because of its large reader base and exceptionally favorable reviews.Based on my search, I rate this book as best in its class, i.e., among books that help architects to prepare drawings for commercial building construction.However, this is not a practical book for designing, renovating, or repairing a home. I suggest two books that are more useful for readers with a residential interests.WHAT IT CONTAINSChing’s book is primarily a catalog of detail drawings, arranged in these chapters:1. The Building Site2. General Structural Issues3. Foundations4. Floors5. Walls6. Roofs7. Moisture & Thermal Protection8. Doors & Windows9. Stairs, Fireplaces, Space Layout, etc.10. Interior Finishes11. HVAC & Electrical12. Materials & FastenersAPPENDIX. Dimensions, Loads, Fire Protection, Noise, etc.The book has about 500 pages. The drawings number in the thousands, so there is a lot of information on each page. I can’t imagine any other construction book that has a greater volume of sheer detail.The drawings are extensively annotated. The annotations are as important as the drawings themselves, providing an education about each assembly.In addition to the detail drawings, Ching includes a number of illustrated tutorials on various topics, such as structural forces, that are informative and well rendered.Unfortunately, in this fifth edition, the text is almost illegibly small and light. The spidery font is a disaster. Even with strong glasses and good lighting, reading the text is a chore. Also, the graphics tend to be somewhat too small. The book is printed entirely in monotone black, or maybe it’s dark grey. These flaws seriously undermine the usability of the book.WHAT IT ISN’TChing’s book is not a design guide. It is like a trunk full of building blocks that contains no guidance in assembling the blocks. Ching does not distinguish between methods and materials of different merit. For example, the book passes no judgement on flat roofs, active and passive solar heating, and forced-air heating, all of which have serious shortcomings.Also, it provides only limited coverage of fundamental design issues, including energy efficiency, comfort, and indoor health.This book is not for residential applications. Its attempt to cover both commercial and residential construction proves to be impractical. The two worlds of construction have little commonality of methods or materials. The great bulk of this book is oriented toward commercial construction, for example, with coverage of heavy steel and concrete structures. Someone who is designing a home would have to search for needles of useful information in this haystack.BETTER BOOKS FOR RESIDENTIAL DESIGN & CONSTRUCTIONFor those interested in residential design and construction, I recommend two books that are more useful, and certainly more accessible, than Ching’s book.The best design guide for homes is SUPER HOUSE: DESIGN YOUR DREAM HOME FOR SUPER ENERGY EFFICIENCY, TOTAL COMFORT, DAZZLING BEAUTY, AWESOME STRENGTH, AND ECONOMY, by Donald Wulfinghoff. This uniquely user-friendly guide uses eight “Steps†to create an ideal home from foundation to roof, or to deal with any individual part of a house, such as replacing the windows. It goes straight to the most desirable methods and materials, ignoring the rest. It pursues energy efficiency, comfort, health, strength, and durability throughout. Also, it warns the reader of commonplace bad practices to avoid.The best comprehensive reference book for residential construction data is THE VISUAL HANDBOOK OF BUILDING AND REMODELING, by Charlie Wing. It illustrates residential structures and materials in great depth, but offers no systematic design guidance.The diagrams and formatting of both books use color very effectively. In addition, SUPER HOUSE uses hundreds of color photographs to illustrate good and bad practices.
I have found the two earlier editions on my shelf to be absolutely invaluable ~ they are disintegrating from heavy use. But, I'm afraid that the old ones will wear even more, because the hair line print, both the text and the drawings in this edition (undoubtedly the best edition yet for content) is a chore. I don't know what they were thinking ~ going green by saving ink? I'm going to try to adapt to the pale gray but I'm not optimistic about succeeding. A return may ultimately be in order along with the purchase of a new copy of an older more legible edition. Two point five stars for now, but will re-comment if I find it to be keeper.OK --- this is an addendum to above: The fifth edition is for me NOT a keeper - I've given it to a friend who has only rare need for this type of reference material, in contrast to my frequent need and use. I have normal eyesight, and the text in the fifth edition is both pale and diminutive to such an extent that I find it illegible in any practical sense. I'm very disappointed in that I was eagerly looking forward to this new edition. The drawings are usable, but taxing for the same reasons. What we have is Beethoven's Fifth delivered underwater. What a bummer! Two stars.

I am a retired physician but I knew very little about the history and science that this book explores. This book is easy and very interesting to read. It is a layman’s guide to the politics, early science, and history of forensic medicine and a great tribute to those whose intelligence and hard work lead us to where we are today. The reader will enjoy the many human interest cases discussed that give the book a fascinating personal touch. This book is for those who like science, history and page turning nonfiction.
If you expect a dense scientific text or will be disappointed that some of the cases are accidental deaths and not murder, don't read. However, if like me you enjoy a bit of history, a bit of science, a lot of morbid investigation, and the triumphant underdog story of two luminary forensic examiners against the backdrop of Prohibition, the book is fascinating and morbidly fun.The title "Poisoner's Handbook" belies the book's true focus, the two amazing men at the center of each of the public histories of the poisons Blum writes about: chloroform, arsenic, cyanide, mercury, carbon monoxide, radium, ethyl and methyl alcohols, and thallium.Charles Norris, first Chief Medical Examiner of NYC, and his chief toxicologist, Alexander Gettler were, according to Blum, almost solely responsible for modernizing forensic science in the United States. Before Norris' appointment, the office of coroner required no medical training, and death certificates were often incomplete or falsified for bribes if they were filled out at all. Norris and Gettler spent their careers making forensics a rigorous study, and as if that weren't enough, were hugely influential crusaders for regulation of toxic substances, and for the repeal of Prohibition, which engendered a slew of deadly bootleg concoctions, including the industrial wood grain alcohol that the government endeavored to make more poisonous than it already was, knowing that it would be imbibed by prohibition breakers.Although the writing was snappy and fast-faced, Blum had little work to do to create drama; Norris and Gettler's heroic efforts to identify the effects of these poisons on the body in many cases for the very first time, and the huge failure that was the Prohibition largely did her work for her. I was riveted. I'm not sure why there isn't yet a forensic TV drama about the two men and the poisons they studied.
The Poisoner’s Handbook is a captivating blend of 1920’s crime stories and the chemistry that made it all possible.Blum’s book is easy to read (though it assumes an intelligent reader), the chemistry is never overwhelming, and the two gentlemen that she chose to follow throughout the chemical boom of the Roaring 20’s led fascinating jobs filled with mystery, murder, death, ground brains and Bunsen burners. And at under 300 pages, it is just the right length.I often use non-fiction books such as this to cleanse my palate (as it were) if I’ve had a bit too much fantasy and SciFi. This book did the trick.Also, reading the anecdotes in this book makes me want to quit my job and write murder mysteries because there are just so many sneaky ways of killing people! Fortunately, all y’all are safe - I very nearly failed junior Chemistry in high school, and sometimes, even measuring out teaspoons of coffee grounds in too much chemistry for me. I guess I’ll need to hire an evil genius assistant...
I absolutely loved this book. It is a highly readable account of the rise of forensic medicine and toxicology in the United States, focusing on the Bellevue lab in New York City. The book talks about a number of homicides (or, in some cases, accidents that were believed to be homicides) that resulted from poisonous chemicals. There are chapters on arsenic, cyanide, carbon monoxide, radium, thallium, etc. Some of the compounds that the author discusses were known to be poisons (like arsenic and cyanide, for example), whereas some were new compounds, discovered in the first third of the twentieth century, that were not discovered to be poisonous until ill effects were reported.The book is not just about crime or homicidal maniacs who use poison as their weapon of choice. It is also about changing technologies, corporate greed, and egregious misuse of chemical compounds that borders on being comical to the modern reader. (Radium health tonics. Blearghhh.)The book is well written (the crisp, non-academic writing is very refreshing - unlike the radium health tonics) and does not get overly bogged down in scientific terms. The author provides enough medical and scientific background to be relevant, but she presents it in layman's terms. I love reading about the periodic table, but since I am not a scientist, I find that sometimes I get lost when there is too much detail. That is not the case here. I highly recommend this book.
I thought this book read like a novel. I had bought it as a reference, and have used it as such, but read it from cover to cover. I've noted there are critiques that say some of the science is incorrect, so I suppose I'd check before I used a specific point in your own novel. I would not let the criticism deter you from buying it. The discussion of alcohol poisoning during Prohibition is enough reason to read this. I don't mention my own books in a review of others,' but in this case it's a compliment to Ms. Blum. Her Prohibition discussion helped me a lot as I wrote Rekindling Motives. Rekindling Motives (Jolie Gentil Cozy Mystery Series Book 2) I recommend this book for anyone who wants a broad overview of the topic.

I did a little bit of research at the beginning of the year on the blood type diet after a friend of mine mentioned it to me. I was having all kinds of issues from anxiety, acid reflex, digestion issues, and other health problems. These issues came on all of the sudden as I previously would eat healthy for my blood type without knowing it. I suddenly changed my diet and venturing into other foods. I began to slowly poisoning my body without realizing it until my body started acting all kinds of crazy. After reading this book it began to make sense and became clear to me to go back to my old eating habits. I am now starting to feel better just after a few days. I will buy Dr. Adamo's other books as there are other blood types in my household
Will probably work for many typ o people. I suggest really knowing your own body. He insists that type o people have problems getting their blood to clot. I have problems keeping mine from clotting. So I suggest a caveat to any so called health guru.
I found that the book was very small; more like a booklet. However, the information was interesting. It seems the foods I should be eating were some of my favorites anyway. I discovered in order to follow the diet plan, not surprisingly, I will have to modify and eliminate some foods, and drinks like some citrus, grains, and coffee! That was another interesting change that I found myself doing just recently: limiting coffee and drinking more green tea, which the diet recommends! That was really an "aha!" moment. It seemed that my body was "craving" green tea rather than coffee. It was great to discover that green tea is the better choice! I look forward to improved health, energy, and less digestive issues that the diet plan promises!
Love this condensed version of the book! I have removed certain foods from my diet and the results have been really good. I have lost a few pounds, no more bloating and burping, etc. Friends have noticed a difference in me. I suggest that you try the book based on your blood type if you want to improve your life. Getting ready to order the cookbook based on blood type for myself and a friend has asked that I order her a copy of the food beverage and supplement book based on her blood type.
Great book. I actually ordered two. I finally see why I could never lose weight, despite being health conscious and working out my weight sometimes ballooned or I could not lose. I learned I was eating all the foods my blood type rejected. I once ate yogurt and would be very ill..turns out diary is not good for 0 negative. I am having digestive woes and after reading this book I discovered out 75% of the foods I thought was healthy was not beneficial for my blood type!If you are unable to lose weight or having digestive issues read this book: it might help!

Would recommend the book to become familliar with concept then purchase this smal guide as a quick reference guide...JMO.
Best thing I have ever done for myself. Blood sugars are dropping. Losing weight without exercise. Feel better mentally and physically. It is a little hard to give up my favorite foods. I cheat a little, but this lifestyle change is worth it. Acid Reflux GONE! Stopped taking medication for Acid Reflux and now I don't have to. Have cut my insulin amounts in half. Still lowering it everyday. Best thing ever.
