SPOILER ALERT:The ending to this series leaves you feeling hollow. I appreciate series like the Stormlight Archive and the Prince/King/Emperor of Thorns where the endings generally fit the narrative that's been held to throughout the series. Hamilton keeps a positive note throughout this series where our heroes face and overcome negative circumstances... until the end. The expectation that readers hold out for, that Wulfric and Adelaide (I'm sorry about spellings here, as I listened to the audible book) reunite and live a happily ever after of sorts never occurs. The series could have easily gone on, with Adelaide and Wulfric spending some more years looking for one another, but instead comes to an abrupt, earth shattering halt.I think what kills me is that Hamilton missed (or purposely ignored) the obvious, good ending. After Jagovyr (The Meister Spaeker) concludes his story at the inn, and Wulfric confronts him about the embellished/fabricated details in his narrative, he could have dropped hints about Adelaide's death being a story element, and not necessarily fact. Wulfric could have still had his vengeance, and then Adelaide could have been brought out as a surprise in the end somehow. Wulfric could have said something to the effect of:"I'm glad one part of your story isn't true though.""I'd figured you'd think as much," Jagovyr grunted in agreement.They both rode on for a while in silence, and then Wulfric pulled a chain from his pocket, the end of which had a golden ring attached."I don't think I could have accomplished any of this without her by my side all of these years," Wulfric finally said, and smiled.Jagovyr smiled along with him and nodded, adding ,"You have to admit though... the story pulls at your heart strings."Again, I think Hamilton missed a great ending, and instead came up with something rushed that was obviously supposed to catch the reader by surprise and did... but not in a good way. The fact that years passed until the final revenge didn't really compute either... what had he been doing all this time while his friends started families? Did the author get bored with the series and characters and decide to suddenly end it all in a surprising flaming pile of crap? That's the impression I get.I get that a lot of people will really appreciate the surprising ending for no other reason than that it defies expectation. It wasn't the obvious choice. But to me, defying convention just for defying convention's sake doesn't necessarily translate to something good, and I believe Hamilton failed here.
Great story ruined by a sudden and ultimately unsatisfying ending. The first two books and the majority of the third were great and really sucked you into the story and world. Then with 10% of book three remaining you suddenly zap forward in time to a quick mediocre ending. Honestly he should have gone for a fourth book and filled us in on all the time between. Too much happened and too many mysteries were hinted at to just end it the way it was.
While I have enjoyed this series and The Society of the Sword, I see a trend of missed opportunities in his storytelling. He relies heavily on telling his readers what has happened instead of showing them. I want to experience what happens to the character as it happens, not after the fact. His stories are still entertaining, but the skill reflects the cost. You can tell he is still learning.
I think like a lot of people have stated this book and series had the potential to be amazing but ended up being somewhat of a let down. But the writer clearly didn't care about going into things at a deeper level. Examples include topics such as the old gods, why Wulfric was chosen or how one of the blood blades was able to match him in strength after he went berserk remained unanswered. There are a few more examples but I don't want to go into spoilers.The final few scenes of the book very clearly rushed and seemed like the writer was basically ready to get it over it as soon as possible.As for the ending itself, it let a lot of open items unanswered. Overall it kind of felt like a TV show that was told it wouldn't be renewed so the writers rushed to try and conclude it mid season.
When you spend 3 books learning about someones life and to have an ending like Blood Debt gave was very disappointing. If I knew the ending was like this I would not of read any of the books. To have extraordinary things happen to your hero in the books and to have an ending that is ho hum, like what might happen in real life, not sure if I need to read that ending. It is almost like the author was pushed by his publisher to get the book done and he finished book 3 that afternoon. Again very disappointed, will not be reading any more books by this author.
I'll start by saying I enjoyed the series as a whole, but something definitely went wrong at the end. The first two books, and most of this final installment, set a pace for this story that was pretty brisk compared to the norm in this genre, though it was done relatively well. A time skip here or there to gloss over unneeded filler. All fine.But the lead up to the climax and resolution in this book.... Talk about whiplash!Picked up speed like a top fuel dragster going downhill with a tailwind, only to hit a brick wall at the bottomI find myself disappointed because of what I feel this story could have been. I don't know, maybe that's just this author's style, but I can't help feeling like this was wasted potential.If you do decide to give this series a chance, you MUST read along with the audiobook. The narration by Simon Vance is outstanding!
This is hands down the best trilogy I've read in a while. Heroes, villains, ladies and adventure. Well written, descriptive and good character development makes it enjoyable, while snippets of humour bring it to life. It's a story that isn't afraid to laugh at itself, and becomes stronger by doing so.
I really wanted to like this book having enjoyed the first two, but a lot of the built up story lines from the last two books go nowhere interesting and the ending was rather sudden and disappointing.

That's what I don't like about his major point: that it has to be made. Sprinkle takes on one of the most pressing issues in church life today, homosexuality. He argues that "If the church is ever going to solve this issue, it needs to stop seeing it as an 'issue.' Homosexuality is not an issue to be solved; it's about people who need to love and be loved."Christians have gotten worked up about legalizing gay marriage. Some talk about a homosexual agenda. I did not want to buy this book because I was not sure I wanted to read another book by a conservative Christian on the topic of homosexuality. As a Christian married male who has same sex attraction it is hard to read books by men who have no idea what it is like to have same sex attraction try to write about it. In my opinion most say they want to love gay people and not judge but in reality they come across as very judgmental. I certainly felt that about Kevin DeYoung's book and Landon Schott's book. In fact I read DeYoung twice just to see if I missed something, I didn't, I felt judged through the whole book. There always seems to be an attitude that comes across that says I am better than you because I don't deal with the egregious abomination of homosexuality. However, I am glad to have purchased this book. Sprinkle does a great job of bringing across truth and at the same time his word choice and 'tone' is never condemning. I like that does not put down affirming authors and even states that some of their arguments are good. I don't see that in most evangelical authors. It is like they cannot say that one has a good point because then they might come across as siding on the side of pro gay theology.This is an easy book to read and very Christ like in his approach to this topic. People to Be Loved changed my life. In my quest to love my dear LGBTQ friends and family while also honoring my Christian faith, I have found hope, encouragement and freedom to love like Jesus. The book is well written, and Dr. Sprinkle slugs through mounds of historical research and Biblical exegesis. At times the reading is tedious and mentally exhausting - not unlike our human relationships when we choose the hard work of seeking to understand and truly empathizing with one another. Perhaps what I love most is Preston's posture of humility, openness to discussion, and desire for true relationship even when beliefs differ in the most sacred areas of our lives. Please read this book with the same openness, thoughtfulness and desire for truth and grace.
I thought, going into this book, that it would be crap from a young, restless, reformed guy. Even if Sprinkle fits that bill, he must number among the most intelligent and faithful of that crew. I have read many of the books on homosexuality and this is the most Biblically incisive, accessible, and pastoral that I have encountered. The only gripe that I have is that Sprinkle is a bit flip in tone throughout the book, which I was okay with but some may find off-putting considering the serious nature of the topic he addresses.Nonetheless, this is a must read for every pastor and anyone interested in what God (and thus the Bible) says on a divisive issue of our day
I've read through this book several times, most recently with a small group of Christians who are same sex attracted. A compact, lay audience friendly book on one of the more controversial topics within the church today, People to be Loved has plenty to say to both affirming and traditional Christians. Ultimately the book supports a traditional definition of marriage based on scripture, history, and discussion of some of the major voices engaged in today's debate about gay marriage, but always in a respectful and humane manner. It invites its readers to honestly explore what scripture has to say about gay relationships rather than hitting them over the head with a thumping Bible. The last third or so of the book covers in broad strokes topics related to homosexuality in a manner that encourages Christians to understand and embrace those who are same sex attracted, particularly those who want to follow Christ. The Church has often driven gays away from it; this book offers insight into how the Church, while scripturally faithful can still be welcoming.One of the things I've most appreciated about this book is how it models a Christian debate on a contentious issue still filled with humility, compassion, and a genuine desire for God's truth.

My husband and I fell in love with DK (especially the Smithsonian line) during a trip to the Smithsonian museums. The books are filled with an immense amount of information which is presented in a fascinating, readable way. Of course the author couldn't include absolutely every single detail about the subject at hand, but they still did a wonderful job. The photos are gorgeous and a perfect complement to the information being presented. The books themselves have sturdy binding and stout construction.
First of all, DK Motorbooks are beautiful books which superbly treat their subjects! I wanted a decent tome which treated The American Revolution and I purchased this volume with confidence that it would meet my expectations. Well it didn't meet my expectations; it exceeded them! I thought I knew just about everything about the Revolutionary War but this superb book proved me wrong! I learned a great deal from this book and its images and graphics! I highly recommend this book to any American History enthusiast!
This is the best "stand-alone" one volume summary of the American Revolution I have ever seen. Expertly written and lavishly illustrated, this book has a strong appeal to readers of all ages and knowledge of the American Revolution. A material omission in my opinion is a lack of maps showing troop positions and movements for the various battles. It would add so much to the narrative.

I've been a self-taught guitar player for 50 years. As such, my approach has been to learn the chords of a song and then play them. But my knowledge pretty much ended there, and I needed something to get me to the next level. I tried numerous online courses and videos, and while some were interesting, they all seemed to jump into picking exercises, CAGED shapes, and jumped all around the topic of guitar playing.It seems there are two concepts that every guitar player needs to know if they want to progress with the instrument: The fretboard and the root, third and fifth of every scale. This book is focused on the first concept only, and as such, does an admirable job. Too many instructors seem to pass quickly over knowledge of the fingerboard and the exercises needed to learn it. That's a shame. Being able to immediately find a note, means it's easy to transpose chords to fit.I purchased many guitar books (a lot from Amazon!) that I read a bit and then put aside. This one I read from cover to cover, and am applying its exercises and mnemonics. This one has earned a place near my guitar!
I’ve been playing (picking on a) guitar for well over 40 years and never learned to read music or it’s theory. This has always been a stumbling block for me when trying to play with advanced performers. This book helped me quickly realize and understand patterns where so many others have left me scratching my head.
I've been playing guitar by ear for a long time. Whenever I get together with my buddies to jam they throw around keys changes and I cannot keep up. I have so many books on guitar it's ridiculous. When I bought this book I thought it would be a stupid gimmick. I bought it to add to my collection of difficult to follow guitar instruction books. SURPRISE!!! It was easy to follow, it made sense, and with a bit of practice, I am able to name every note on the fretboard!! Kudos to the author! It's as if guitarhead wrote this book for me. The games and tricks are what did it for me.
The memory aids were a big help to memorizing the Low E, high E, and the A string. Using the "L Rule" and the "Claw" to teach the G and the D strings, pure genius. My guitar teacher told me to pay attention to patterns but never explained what that meant. This book does exactly that!!! Chapter 8 is loaded with patterns if you know what to look for, and now I do thanks to this book. Simply the best guitar book I have purchased.
Memorization is a stretch. The book is based on relationships between strings and octaves. So after reading the book and doing the exercises, you’ll be able to derive any note on the fretboard, but not necessarily instantly know it.Still gave the book 4 stars as I learned some interval relationships / patterns that I didn’t previously know. And understanding intervals / patterns between strings is still important for playing chords, melodies, and solos, so even if it doesn’t deliver on memorization, the material is still useful and definitely worth the price.
The content of this little book delivers on the promise of its title. Easy to follow and well thought through. Yes, there are typos and the grammar could be better. I wasn't looking for a text on grammar. One note: the reverse L position is a 3-string jump, not 2.

And though this book is thorough in what it does explain no-one will ever 'know' the fretboard in 24 hours and be capable of playing at any tempo at any position on the neck. I could no doubt memorize the piano keyboard but that wouldn't make me a pianist. You would be better prepared for what lies ahead if encouraged to get used to a routine of daily practice for the guitar is a lifetimes endeavor, especially if you aspire to play professionally, Segovia for instance practiced 8 hours a day even at 75. I expected more from this book than just note memorization and a brief reference to interval relationships. But the information is well presented for what it is so no doubt other books will address what this one didn't as the development of your playing skills and the application of this knowledge will have to come from elsewhere.
