Good book for changing your lifestyle for better but not good with the terminology used in it. This book caters to people who know English, Hindi and to some extent Marathi languages only. I loved the book for its content but there are many times that the tone was judgmental and condescending. Keeping these two things aside I felt the book was well written and one can learn a lot from it. I'm glad that I will be able to make some good lifestyle changes for my better health.
Another good book by Rujuta after her first book 'Don't lose your mind lose your weight'. The author has explained in detail on how understanding the various energy systems can help us distinguish between which energy system to employ to gain the changes in our body we desire. I thought understanding terms like epoc/afterburn is useful towards understanding the type of exercise one should do to have a fit body for life and does not need to stop after just losing a few pounds. The author emphasizes on fitness being a long term activity and not just end with getting a flat stomach which one anyway cannot sustain without treating exercise as a part of life. I recommend every one desirous of getting a good, fit body to read this book.Having said the above, and being a marathoner myself, I have to say I disagree on the author's criticism of the new breed of aspiring Indian runners running a marathon in what she thinks to be a longish 5 hours. Running a marathon by working professionals like us itself Is a big win for us. We do not aspire to run a marathon in 2.5 hours like elite runners as we do not go through the kind of training they do. However the book on the whole is engaging and a very good read. Go ahead and read it!
This is a good technical book on exercise science. I prefer to read a language not as we speak informally but the contents are good.Very informative, so I use it as a reference book. I would not recommend reading this book in one go to get the best of this book.I have tried to implemented some of the recommendations, it definitely showed improvement on my performance, specially endurance. I am taking it a step ahead by starting Yoga the Iyengar style.
This is a must read, full of very important facts about exercise, food and fitness.
I have read her earlier book titled- "Don't lose your mind, lose your weight" and the concepts taught have stayed in the mind till now.With this book she has gone leaps ahead with the same trademark training style which ended up simplifying the complex science behind body and still sounding interesting.

The most striking thing about this novel was how applicable the narrative is to living in the late 2010s. Especially sociopolitically! The story itself is so-so. If I hadn't sporadically read Alex Cross novels before, this wouldn't have been a novel that pulled me in to the genius that is James Patterson. I believe he only gets better from here.It wasn't boring, but it wasn't the rich, thrilling and suspenseful story plotting that is behind 'The Murder House', 'The Black Book' and his more recent novels. What will keep you going is the relevance to today's world and living in the shoes of people of color. Good read. Read it for wokeness!
I found that James Patterson's #1 book "Along Came a Spider" is a very interesting read. It it not too often that I can find a psychological mystery to be this exceptional. The Gary Soneji/Murphy out smarting the police with being a psychopath, potential Multiple personality disorder/ personality fatigue, and being the actor with having homicidal "1 year/5 year/lifetime plans" to be famous like he feels he should be is very interesting. From what I heard (without reading any other Alex cross books), this book will set up for some storylines in the next few books allowing for some interesting storylines for the book now.This book series is the Law and Order: Criminal Intent series of James Patterson. While the story revolves around the crime and solving the crime, there is a huge element to the psychological, motives and the "criminal intent". It involves the "ticking" of the criminal to why they would do the things they would do. It can range from money to famous to just being a pure psychological evil driven madman. All in all an A+.In this book by itself, there is one drawback. It can be really slow sometimes. After Soneji's trial and conviction (about half way through) starting with part 4, it starts dragging while Alex Cross continues the case. But it does lead up to a very interesting ending (the last few chapters), in which I will be willing to give it a pass.Like I said, an A+ and an A+ book!!!
Alex Cross's doctorate in psychology was essential in outsmarting the bad guy in this thriller. It was long--several times I was ready for it to end but then a new plot twist brought me back into the story. If you haven't seen the movie, don't bother; the book is immeasurably better. If you have seen the movie, read the book anyway, it is immeasurably better. I saw the movie while reading the book and I was still surprised often. Just in case you didn't get the point, read the book. My sole criticism is the gratuitous use of f-bombs.Entered by Lynne's husband, Chuck.
I really wanted to like this book, but it was so improbable that I struggled finishing it. A detective/psychologist high on pain killers in Washington DC in charge of negotiations? A perp who is organized enough to pull off a long-term stint as a teacher at a high security private school but then is so chaotic and disorganized that he cannot even break into a house? Hypnosis in the court room? The list goes on and on.I guess it was somewhat entertaining but the improbability of it all was bothersome. Especially to a 'fellow' psychologist like me. I am glad I had enough free shipping credits to get this book for free. For free it was good enough.
I have read all of the Alex Cross books except for two,well now one. The reason I waited so long was because the first two were movies.. I have seen both movies and enjoyed them! I figured the books would be the same as the movies... I thought WRONG "Along Came a Spider" was completely different than the movie with minimal similarities! The book was excellent, wish I never waited to read it!!! Can't wait to read "Kiss The Girls!"

I will be the first to admit Patterson's work can sometimes give me nightmares. I picked this one up because a friend had read it and suggested I read it as well so we could discuss it. Wow! Patterson never ceases to amaze me with his intricate plots. Weeks after I was done reading Along Came a Spider I found myself always looking in the rearview mirror. At the same time it was captivating. I simply couldn't quit turning the pages. I wanted to cheer on the budding relationship of Alex and Jezzie and at the same time wanted him to bust her lies like he never had before. I just bought this book to understand some of the psychological, developmental behaviors that I may witness as a teacher in the classroom.Its is great this far. I've only read about 15 pages. It has 175.5 pages and is is a deep book. Very interesting for any teacher or anyone else who is interested in social development and psychology. Just after reading what I have read, I can say that there are many references to Freud, id, ego & superego.
If you are a parent of young children, or indeed of any age, this book gives insights into the stages we all go through as we grow up and progress through our lives. So very thought provoking, and a must read for every new parent.
A fabulous book covering the age ranges and identifies applicable identity concerns and positives .

Picking up where he left off in the Egyptian adventure Cigars of the Pharaoh, Tintin travels to China in The Blue Lotus, a tale which is generally considered Herge's first masterpiece. It's also Tintin's only foray into actual history, specifically the Sino-Japanese conflicts of the early 1930s. The political tensions combined with the chilling threats of drugs give the story an especially high and realistic sense of danger. Herge's interest in China was spurred by a friendship with a young Chinese student named Chang Chong-chen, a relationship that Tintin mirrors with a Chinese boy also named Chang Chong-chen. Herge paints a vivid picture of China and takes the opportunity to denounce ethnic prejudices (though ironically his artistic depiction of the Japanese businessman Mitsuhirato is quite grotesque). This adventure continues where "The Cigars of the Pharaoh" left off. Tintin leaves India and travels to Shanghai. The story itself is entirely fictional, of course, but some of the events are historically accurate, such as the bombing of the Manchurian Railroad, Japan resigning from the League of Nations, the Japanese occupation and an American presence in the international settlement. Tintin and Snowy have many mysteries and near-misses, keeping this story fast-paced and entertaining. One of the best of the series.
Belgian artist Herge wrote "The Blue Lotus" as an adventure for his cartoon hero, the young journalist Tintin, in the early 1930's. Of the many Tintin adventures, this one cuts the closest to historical events, capturing a moment in time in which China struggled with civil war, with the intrusive presence of Europeans, and with a Japanese military invasion. The context supports an intense story in which Tintin battles a drug-smuggling conspiracy with the help of a secret Chinese society.As the story opens, we find Tintin in India, where we left him at the conclusion of "Cigars of the Pharoah." A Chinese visitor, who goes mysteriously insane before he can pass more than a few words of a message, prompts Tintin to travel to China with his faithful dog Snowy. Once in China, Tintin's willingness to stand up for the Chinese makes him both friends and enemies, and puts him on the trail of an opium smuggling ring.Tintin will be hunted by the Japanese Army, by a corrupt police chief in Shanghai, and by the drug smugglers themselves, whose leader will turn out to be an old enemy. He will be befriended by a young Chinese orphan and by a secret society of Chinese patriots; the story will circle back on itself to a thrilling conclusion."The Blue Lotus" features a first-rate storyline. The artwork isn't quite up to Herge's later standards, and Herge deals in some blatant stereotypes of the period, but those minor blemishes need not deter dedicated fans of the series. "The Blue Lotus" is highly recommended to Tintin fans of all ages.
In this early story Tintin ends up in the International Settlement in Shanghai which is quite fascinating historically speaking. I have read that Hergé was heavily criticized for his racial views but what I read in these comics as an old man nowadays is quite the opposite. His empathy for the Chinese is obvious and unalloyed. His early books about The Soviets and The Congo seem more like aberrations and his cracking story about gangs drugs and smuggling is a very enjoyable historical read. Implausible of course but enormous fun.
Three generations of my family are Tintin fans starting in the late 70's. We even bought the miniaturized hardbound, boxed collectors edition of all Tintin stories. And, we've seen the movie -- in 3D. But to really enjoy the adventures of this young journalist and his dog, you need the full-sized soft cover edition. This was it! The art is great. The characters and adventures are memorable and intriguing. If you're a parent, uncle, aunt or grandparent, get it for the kid in your life -- then sit down and enjoy it yourself.
Reading the Tintin adventures when I was a kid changed my life. It was my first exposure to the graphic novel experience. back then you got them a chapter at a time, later in complete book form like this. They were adventure stories with exciting action, mysterious puzzles, hilarious characters, and real world concepts I could understand. I buy them now for my nieces and nephews to read when they come over, but I have to read each one again as well. I very much like this extra-large softcover edition. The art work is much better presented and you can really put you whole focus into the story. I can't afford the hardcover editions so this is the next best thing. Not a one of these is bad. I'm working on collecting them all.
With its detailed and realistic artwork this book creates a real feeling of foreign adventure in the Far East.Herge succeeds at producing a visually and historically accurate picture of 1930's Shanghai as well as binding it all together with a certain morality of burgeoning international cultural understanding."Different peoples don't know enough about eachother" Tintin confides to his friend Chang.However the author quickly reverts to his usual lack of polital correctness by depicting the Japanese as imperious villains with protruding teeth.
As you might or might not know, most early Tintin was originally published in B/W format, with old style drawing. Yes boys and girls, it wasn't the colour edition we have now in hands. The first 9 titles are sceheduled to be released in English. This Blue Lotus is one of them.Most early Tintin might look very old to us. The drawing weren't that smooth, compared to the later coloured edition. If you're a die-hard Tintin fan, I'm sure you really wanted to know what the book originally looked like. You will notice that the panels also changed. Not just the size, but also the sequence. Some panels were even edited or deleted. Some panels are added. In short, you can compare both editions.The book was carefully printed and packaged. From the looks, people would already guess that this book (and also the others) is a lux book. The paper was good. The hard cover was good. The binding was good. The printing inside was also good. What more can you expect? Here the book also provided several pin-ups or covers in colour. It's a very nice gift!If you feel you're a die-hard fan of Tintin (and Herge) then no doubt you must have all these 9 B/W original editions.

I would have liked a little more detail on the temptation of Ananda as his human failings is what makes him so endearing, but it think this is currently the best book available on the disciples. This is a cornerstone book--if you study the Buddhist teachings, you will encounter these names and it is very helpful to have an idea about the people. The intro. has surprisingly good summary on the division of the teachings and gives an oversight for the organization of the Buddhist teachings. It can help you sort out what direction you want to take in your studies when you have a name of the Sutra to look up. I found the description of what killed Buddha and his funeral arrangement to be really interesting as were a brief mention of Possible teachers of the Buddha. There are so many hidden gems along the way, a description of the ideal husband and ideal wife, How a good man could be duped into becoming a serial killer. There are many Karmic examples of how our intentional actions can affect us in the long run. It's deepened my outlook on the suffering that exists. This is a good book I will refer to many times in my studies. Good luck in your learning adventures.
An exemplary book! Any who has wondered about the monks of old closest to the Buddha, whether from reading the suttas and wondering about the names mentioned in many of them or if you just wish to know more about the disciples. The authors did an amazing skillful deed by compiling all known information, from the PÄli text that is, about these Venerable Masters. You will find disciples ranging from MahÄmogallana and SÄriputta, the chief disciples, to Ä€nanda and MahÄkassapa, the ones who looked after the first Buddhist council and some of the closest people to the Buddha. Anybody who has an interest in the teachings must read this book.
As one can expect from this author and publisher, this book deserves a place on your bookshelf. Most of the books in this series are quite expensive whereas this one can occasionally be found in the under $20 category if you have patience and a little time. A great reference that gives life to many of those hard to pronounce names encountered when studying The Pali Canon or other books in general about Buddhism and its teachings.
I'm enjoying it. It's wonderful to hear about these dedicated people.

The book collects information both from the Canon and from commentaries to give a full account of the individuals that were closer to the Buddha in his lifetime. Quite naturally most of the accounts regard the period BEFORE enlightenment, for those that eventually got there as the list includes people in most parts of the path (Arahat, Anagamin, Ekagamin, Sotapatti) including Mallika, wife of King Pasanadi, which not even entered it.
Being myself practitioner of the tibetan Mahayana Buddhism I always felt a deep sense of devotion and fascination for our root guru, Lord Buddha Shakyamuni and the original holy Sangha. Now thanks to the combination of translations of Nyanaponika Thera, Hellmut Hecker, and the corrections and editing of Bhikkhu Bodhi, we have in our hands this great work.Although the texts of the Pali tradition are typically a dense reading, dry and dull, wich approaches teachings and practices from the external basic level, this compilation of deeds of the lives of the Discipules shows us the way of living of these Arhats, and the relationship with his Guru and with each other, about their own spiritual features , and the roles played by each one of them as humble servers of the Sangha and beings.We must be profoundly grateful an inspired by the Disciples which are examples for the buddhist of all over the world and also thankful to the authors for this spiritual and historical treasure which has been brought into the modern era.Before studying this book and the Sutta Pitaka, I especially recommend reading first The Life of the Buddha: According to the Pali Canon, by Bhikkhu Ñanamoli. The study will be more clear and reaeders will notice it.
