This is a story that animal lovers of all ages will fall in love with. Katherine Applegate does a beautiful job at giving a voice to the true story of Ivan the Urban Gorilla, who spent 27 years living in a cage at mall in Washington State. In telling Ivan's story, Katherine not only allows readers to understand and fall in love with Ivan, but she gives his story an imaginative spin. The fact that does this through Ivan's point of view in first person really fascinated me, and made the story feel that much more genuine. I felt like if Ivan could speak, it would similar to the words Katherine used in telling his story. What an unforgettable character Ivan is.To help tell Ivan's story, readers are introduced to some lovable animals like Bob the dog, Stella the elephant and Ruby the baby elephant who joins Ivan and his family of misfits at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall. I loved the interactions between the characters, as well as some of the friendly humans, like young Julia. It was interesting reading the story from Ivan's point of view, as I got see how Ivan went from being a young wild gorilla to slowly become more human like, due to his surroundings and how he was treated. Not only that, I loved seeing how incredibly intelligent he is. The story that tugged on my heart strings the most was seeing how protective of Ruby Ivan becomes and watching how his plan to help save her gets put into action.I love it when a children's author can weave together both fiction and non-fiction elements into their story. Katherine does an amazing job with this. Ivan's narration felt heart felt, it pulled at my heart strings and made me want to take action. Luckily I didn't need to do, as Ivan now has a beautiful at the Atlanta Zoo. Katherine does a superb job at balancing the various emotions readers will feel while reading Ivan's story. She delicately inserts moments of the harsh reality of exotic animal killings and importing through Ivan's back story and his early memories, to showing how people rallied around Ivan and sweet little Ruby and demanded they receive a better home than the ones they lived in at the mall. She also includes moments of joy, humor and heartfelt moments that will leave readers cheering for joy as Ivan finally gets the home he's so desperately deserved and becomes the Silverback he was destined to be, and Ruby gets the family she desperately missed. In the end, I loved seeing how Ivan was able to slowly revert back to being wild, while balancing some of his human like tendencies.This story is so wonderfully written. Katherine's elegant approach to Ivan's story teaches this story's young readers about the conversation that needs to happen with wild animals in captivity, that more needs to be done to protect them and how sticking to our principles can make all the difference, all with out sounding preaching. In fact, if I was a child reading this I wouldn't have picked up on a lot of that. As an adult it was easy for me to pick up on these key elements, but the inner child in me wanted to read more about Ivan. I absolutely enjoyed reading Ivan's touching story. If you're a fan of animals, happy endings and well written children's books I recommend picking this one up.
When my 11-year-old finished reading this novel, his first statement was, “I LOVED that book!†With an endorsement like that and because it was the first instance where he ‘stopped time,’ I had to read the book too.A copy of the author’s Newbery Medal acceptance speech is at the back of my copy of The One and Only Ivan. In it, the author says,†We live in a world where children are bullied into despair and even suicide; where armed guards in a school hallway are considered desirable; where libraries are padlocked because of budget cuts; where breakfast and backpacks, for too many children are unaffordable luxuries.â€â€œWhat makes children better than the rest of us is that they are buoyant, unrepentant optimists.â€As a writer, reader, and lover of words, I make it a habit to ‘stop time’ whenever I come across sparkling phrases that deserve homage. A ‘stop time’ is where we stop whatever we are doing to read out loud and to listen; we listen to both the author’s words and to what made that phrase so meaningful to the reader.Although my son and I read the same book, our reactions to it were as different as a carefree stroll through the park and being caught in a traffic snarl in the city at rush hour. Where my son delighted in the animal conversations, I sobbed.Pixar uses humor with double meaning brilliantly in their storytelling. Katherine Applegate uses the same technique, but in a more realistic vein.I sobbed because the adult world my son will live in doesn’t have easy answers. It isn’t colorful, silly, and happy all the time. My 9 year old son could never "get into" a book. But he wanted to, desperately. I found this book and surprised him with it. He was so excited because it was "big" and had more than 100 pages lol. You see, it was a goal of his to read something "big". This book, I can not say enough about it. It sparked something in him and he read, and read, and read some more. He FINISHED this book in one week! He connected with the character (Ivan) and was emotionally pulled into the story. He then had to learn all he could about this gorilla. Because of how my son loved it, he said it was 5 stars.This book was written from the gorilla's (Ivan's) point of view. It is a bigger book, but don't be alarmed as there are not many words on a page as the formatting is not as tight as a traditional novel. But don't let that stop you either!It is now my son's favorite book. Because of that, and what that means, I give it 5 stars.

This is not a bad book for young readers trying to learn Chinese, given the poor selection of bilingual books available online. The content is not particularly exciting but the illustrations are clear and it does what it set out to do (teach colors). Please note the characters are traditional and there is pinyin in the back of the book but not on the pages themselves. This makes it more suitable for older children with a lot of Chinese under their belt and/or native Chinese speakers learning English.
I really enjoy reading this series of books to my daughter. I like the art work and simple themes of each story, like colors or numbers. It might be harder to read the Chinese if you don't know any, only because characters and pronunciation can be difficult to learn on your own. I learned Chinese as my second language though so having the pronunciation of all the characters in the back is helpful for me as a reference. I wish I could find more series like this!
This book only has chinese characters and english translation. It does not have the chinese phonetic pronunciation.
This is my grandson's favorite book. He always grabs it and give it to me and then climbs up on my lap. We read the book and count the bunnies! He is 21 months old.

Cute board book little book, but it was bent, a little disappointing.
I wish the colors were more vibrant so that it is clear what blue looks like.The last page has the phonetics to match the Chinese characters, which really helped with the reading.
Good book, and it will work for me. Some of the words are not particularly useful Chinese words for a learning speaker and reader (i.e. honeysuckle and peony). I got it as a book to teach my kids some color words and maybe a few object names. It is fine for the color words. There are just more useful object names to learn in my opinion than some of the ones used in the book.

I wanted to like this book but it's horribly written. It says it's for 4 to 8 year olds but it's written for an adult audience. The vocabulary used is unnecessarily challenging for a child and at an adult level. The writing style is overly verbose, confusing, and beyond the comprehension of children. For example topics, like Ada's parents divorce, are covered in a way that's intended to be witty but the topic is covered in such an indirect way that it's just confusing to a child. We only made it halfway through before giving up on it. The author seems completely unfamiliar with children. One of the worst books for children I've attempted to read in a long time. I regret purchasing.
I thought I knew about this lady, but I learned so much more from reading this fascinating book. And the illustrations are the best part - Jessie Hartland's sly humor shines through the heavy petticoats and mathematical concepts.
Fascinating book- and inspiring too. So many interesting details about this amazing female scientist. My daughter especially loves that she grew up without a dad too :)
I named my daughter after Ada Lovelace. I own several children's books about her. This is my favorite :)
Delightful book! Informative and inspiring. Perfect for my inquisitive six-year-old granddaughter -- who happens to be named Ada.

I like complicated things made simple. Although I have been podcasting since 2012 there are certain aspects that I still find confusing. Paul Colligan's "How to Podcast -Volume 4" cuts through a lot of nonsense I've accumulated over time about the podcast and condenses the process into a four-step process that even I can follow. This combined with providing links to the tools (Auphonic) you need to follow through on the four-step process made this a helpful book which will I will use as handy resource near my mic.
This book is awesome! I was lost on how to start my podcast, so many options with mics, software, places to post - OMG!With simple steps and a straight forward approach I was able to get out of my mental confusion and get a clear picture of how to do it without spending all my time and energy.Thank you so much Paul. This book was really a one stop for solving all my problems and for that I'm grateful.
Explain to me how the newer version of a book which I had the previous edition is 95 pages less? That doesn't make sense to me at all Very disappointed! Lot less information included in this version.
I have know Paul for 10 years and he is the go to guy to learn to podcast!As an experienced podcaster, this book provided me with immediate value :)At the same time it's written in a conversational way that would be a great quick start guide for a beginner.
