This book covers fundamental statics concepts that are required for thermodynamics, strength of materials and many other engineering concepts. I personally have a hard time understanding statics when trying to learn from this book, there is a decent amount of examples in each section but some concepts are "skipped" when explaining examples simply because the author assumes you already understand certain Algebra/geometric concepts. If you do not understand a concept or method STOP and redo the section before moving forward! you cannot skip or fail and continue learning statics well, every concept builds on the last. My biggest problem with this text book is that the rental I received was beyond damaged, and with no time to return and get a different copy (class had already started) I was forced to use a book with torn binding, missing pages and heavy abuse. I've attached pictures of the book I received from amazon rentals. I've also attached a picture of the number of times this book was rented out, I could count at least 9 stock tags.
A lot of information that we hardly reviewed from the book in class; what a waste.
This book is just okay. The book has fairly good explanations of the ideas, but in the "step by step" examples, they don't always tell you what they're doing. I don't know if they're just assuming I'll catch it, but if you're trying to figure out how to do the problem, it's sometimes very hard to understand how they get what they do. My college professor doesn't like this book for that reason either, but I guess there's not much to choose from in this area...And there ARE answers to the odd numbered questions in the back of the book, which helps.
The book was ordered new but it arrived damaged. The front cover has a torn in it. I expect more from Amazon. I would return it if I didn't need it at the moment. Will not order books from Amazon again. Otherwise the book content was good and it was the correct book and arrived on time.
I had to purchase this book for a class and it is a great introductory book. The book is non calc based so not everything is covered but if you need to communicate with an engineer and learn engineering terminonlogy this is the book for you. Several topics are covered such as simple truss anaylsis and load distribution as well thermal effects on building materials. Material testing regulations and standards are also discussed. There are many more topics covered that can put you on track when communicating with an engineer. I am a carpenter and communicating with engineers is sometimes an everyday event. Knowing engineering basics helps tremedously.
Not really useful for me. My teacher does not use it in class, he just give as a homework from end of the chapter. Average book, does not explain everything like I would like to see in the book for $150.

I had read a few reviews that said the book was bad... But it was the course material book so what can you do? If at all possible find an alternative to this book. The concepts are not clear or precise and the examples are not fully explained. Unless you are very competent with math and logic leaps, this is not a great source for learning.

I really enjoyed reading about this time in history that we don’t hear a lot about. Interesting facts amidst the fiction that is brought to life in seven unique ways. Most of these authors were new to me and I enjoyed reading the different view points and writing styles. I enjoyed each novella but I must say Journey of the Heart by Johnnie Alexander was my favorite as I love reading about the Underground Railroad when it is well done. Charity Sinclair was an impressive heroine and her strength in her beliefs is an example for everyone. Well done and believable. Pressing On by Rose Allen McCauley is enlightening about the Separatists and their beliefs and lifestyle. The Bridge Between Us by Sherri Wilson Johnson has mystery woven into the romance . A great story of forgiveness. Return to Sweetwater Cove by Christina Miller is heartwarming and brought tears to my eyes. Digging for Love by Ramona K. Cecil shows how misconceptions about social classes and judging someone by their nationality causes harm when hearts are involved. Wedding of the Waters by Rita Gerlach shows that love knows no boundaries. Charlotte risks everything to attend to her first love. The Love Of a Child by Lauralee Bliss has you falling for the children. All in all this is an enjoyable collection that provides quick reads that you can read each in one setting. You can feel the surge of excitement around the building of the canal and the changes it brought to the area and the people.The Erie Canal was dug, by hand, across Upstate New York state and Ohio in the early 1800s. It brought a lot of people together, in many ways, because of the way it was made and the communities it went through. These 7 stories are an interesting and diverse look at the people whose lives were impacted by it. I live close to part of the canal, so it makes it a little more personal to me. Of course my favorite one is about the Irishman who worked digging the canal, my second favorite about the German village, since my heritage is both Irish and German. All the stories include interesting historical information about this vast area and the early days of the canal. It's easy to become thoroughly engrossed in each story. They're written with great depth. You can easily envision the characters and feel as keenly as they do what they are going through. Never a boring moment! I enjoyed reading about the building on the Erie Canal during the different stages of development. Also I enjoyed reading about the different towns the canal went through and how it brought goods to their town and how they were able to travel by water way. Reading this reminds me of the trip I took last Summer to Cumberland, Maryland to visit the Cumberland Visitor Center which houses the C&O Canal National Historical Park. Inside the museum are many pictures of digging the canal and water travel. I was absolutely fascinated and could fully enjoy this book more because of the visuals I had while reading it. Sweet, clean stories written by seven great authors. I love the area and the historical settings. I love all the various series of these collections. I enjoy the Christian themes. The stories are clean, sweet, and full of everything a good romance should: conflict and love. The phrase “quilt as you go†has occasionally – and unfortunately – encompassed quilting ON the go. Meaning, hand-pieced and/or hand-quilted projects are made mobile and portable: throw them in a bag and work on them in waiting rooms, on the bus, etc. That is not what is meant by QAYG.Jera Brandvig used 2 joining methods in her earlier book Quilt As-You-Go Made Modern (2014). Essentially, pieced blocks are quilted onto the batting without the backing piece. Later, the entire pieced and joined and quilted blocks plus batting are secured to the backing with secondary quilting lines. For those of us without a longarm, that means there will be bulk. And tucks, and curses, and possibly yet another UFO.Joining Method 3 of Quilt As-You-Go Made Vintage, however, is indubitably the traditional QAYG method. Each block gets quilted on its own as a 3-layered sandwich. Machine quilters without a longarm no longer have to pine and whine. Beginners will find it easier to acquire free-motion quilting skills since only 1 12-inch block is manipulated at a time.~ ~ ~ So What Are The 3 Joining Methods?Method 1 joins blocks to blocks with no sashing strips; the pieced blocks each get quilted to a batting. Then they are all joined together and quilted onto the backing. Method 2 joins blocks and rows using a ½†finished strip which looks like a narrow sashing. This can get a big messy since longer and longer strips have to be used (and sometimes assembled from shorter strips) as the piecing of blocks and rows progresses. Then, as with Method 1, it all gets quilted again onto the backing.Really, only Method 3 is the new one here. All 3 parts of the 12â€x12†quilt sandwich block get quilted. It’s easier in many ways, but still requires the joining strips used in Method 2 on BOTH front and back.~ ~ ~ Any special tools?Brandvig does suggest a 60 mm rotary cutter for slicing through stacks of batting. Clover wonder clips are ideal for keeping the layers together. Binder clips also will work. A 14â€x14†fully revolving cutting mat is also suggested, but not required. She also says a walking foot is optional, but I have never ever been able to quilt through all 3 layers without one. Some new machines do allow even-feeding without a walking foot, but not mine.And everyone, IMO, should have a 6â€x24†ruler, as it allows cutting strips without having to fold the fabric too many times. Brandvig also offers her opinion on her favorite thread, which is a pleasant surprise I won’t spoil unless asked. ;) Add some curved safety pins and needle-punched batting … And you are ready to choose your 1st project out of the 9 projects. Or design your own using the 51 blocks provided.~ ~ ~ 51 Blocks & 9 Projects?Quilt As-You-Go Made Vintage is the most value-laden creativity-producing book of the year by my vote.Not just 9, but 14 quilted projects are included. Some of those are pillow, miniature, or table runner versions of larger quilts. Some are mere gallery shots, but with sufficient information for you to work out on your own.Each of the 12â€x12†51 blocks are a wealth of designs and techniques with vintage appeal. Abundant tips and suggestions broaden the possibilities far beyond what the book’s title promises. These block patterns are just begging to be added to your block library.I found this book so much easier to understand than other QAYG books. If you have avoided free-motion quilting or are still a bit timid, Quilt As-You-Go Made Vintage is ideal for you. And if you are fully experienced, you will have pure fun coming up with your own designs.
I have Jera's first quilt as you go book. I got it before I even attempted quilting! I have followed her blog and own her fabrics, which are every bit as lovely as her work. I like this book even better than the first. Her style is geared more towards vintage and older pieces rather than modern, which is what her first book featured. I love that she showcases 3 ways to use backing for QAYG. I find it to be way more thorough than her first book, which is a help. I also love how she gives block examples so you can construct and personalize your own quilt, along with inspirational pictures of quilts that she has done. That photographs are lovely, not over the top, but you can see each one displayed in your own home. She also included a couple of wall hangings, which are beautiful. I have been waiting for this book to come out since March, and it did not disappoint! My hope is that she continues to publish these inspirational books for quilters, even if you are new to quilting, this book is NOT intimidating like many are. She walks you through it and I highly recommend. Well done, Jera!
This book is amazing! I learned to quilt from Jera's first book Quilt As You Go Made Modern. She takes all the fear out of quilting and frees your mind to create! She writes in a very clear and understandable way. This new book is not only beautiful (the photography is amazing) but the quilts are stunning! It's an encyclopedia of how to make 51 different quilt blocks! I love how she teaches you how to assemble the quilt traditionally or quilt as you go. It makes it a quilt book for everyone! I can bear to practice free motion quilting on just a stack of fabric sandwiches, so I plan to use this method as a way for me to practice free motion without dealing with the bulk of a large quilt. Now, I will have a beautiful quilt in the end not just a stack of sandwiches! Thanks Jera!!!
Well...here is my issue with this book...it is called Quilt as you go...but the only instructions on the methods of how to do this are 6 pages at the end of the book. Three methods with 2 pages instructions for each. I found the instructions for each method lacking. The book has nice quilt patterns...but I did not buy it for patterns. I think more of the contents should have been detailed instructions and diagrams to actually do Quilting as you go. I found better tutorials on you-tube going step by step and explaining the process. I have plenty of quilt books...I wanted an instruction book based on the title.
The directions were scattered throughout the book, so for one step I read in one section, then another step go to another section instead of having the directions for a quilt pattern all together. It was too confusing for me so I returned it.
I love this book! I loved her previous book, and this one expands on her easy quilt-as-you-go techniques. I love all the block patterns she includes as well. I do not enjoy quilting large quilts on my home machine, so Jera Brandvig's books have been instrumental in helping me have the skills and confidence to complete a large quilt completely at home without costly professional quilting. YAY!!! BTW, I love her fabric lines, too ;)
The main issue with this book is the quilt as you go information it contains can all be found online for free so only buy the book if you like the author. The quilt patterns are old blocks done in newer fabrics but unless you are an experienced quilter the information and figures on how to make them may be frustrating or require you to find tutorials online or buy another book. I apologize to the author but this book is pretty useless for a novice quilter, intermediate, or like myself somebody who has quilted for over 20 years. I was hoping it would help me to learn an easier and cleaner method of quilting as you go but no such luck. My advice is to save your money to buy quilt supplies instead of this book.

Another book I started a while ago and just finished, ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Income Figure isn't very long or very complicated; it makes for a good, quick read about blogging.If you don't know ProBlogger, you should, at least if you're interested in blogging: it's the go-to blog about blogs. Yes, I love meta and the word "blog" will come frequently in this post.In any case, as I left the academic world and decided to try something new, I thought about starting blogs for money. I love to write, I seem to be pretty good at managing and producing content, and I'm sure there are things I could share with the world... for a profit.The book goes through the three steps of making money from blogs: Setting up a blog Making it popular Earning money from itThe most important lesson I got from the book is the importance of choosing a niche; it helps build a loyal community, get expertise and great, contextualized advertising. However, except for the generic "start by identifying your own interests, passions, and energy levels for topics", there's not a lot of direction about how to choose a profitable niche. There also isn't much about search engine optimization (which I fortunately covered in another book) or about keyword research. However, a lot of the things that Rowse and Garrett hold important (niching, ads, etc) aren't necessarily the be-all and end-all of popular blogging.The one section I found really useful was the monetizing section where the authors explain all about choosing the right ads, affiliate programs and other revenue streams. While I'm sure there's more complete info on this (it could be worth an entire book), it was a good introduction and gave me guidelines if I ever have to do something like this myself.In general I found ProBlogger interesting and informative, even if it doesn't delve too deep into any of the topics the authors touch on. Even the case study in the last chapter lacked depth-I would have liked to know more about how he managed his content, built a community, etc. But as an introduction to professional blogging, it does the job.
If you are blogging to make money and haven't read this book, you are in for a treat! Co-authors Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett lay out all of the details that the aspiring blogger needs in order to begin earning money at blogging. The book also pulls no punches in telling the readers how much work they will have to put in and how remarkable their blogs really must be to draw advertising dollars. Professional blogging is indeed full-time work, make no mistake. Darren and Chris have created in this manual a detailed roadmap for new and experienced bloggers alike who might have unique idea for a blog and enough passion and material about the topic for the long haul. I've got a blog and now I have a million new ideas about how to make the blog more "can't live without it" for my current subscribers and how to reel in more new readers. The book is an easy and enjoyable read. I read the entire thing in one cross-country flight. The sections of their book that I found most useful were the chapters on income and earning strategies, how to write a blog, blogging for a niche, blog networks, blog promotion and marketing, and the secrets of successful blogging. If you're a blogger, this is a book you shouldn't be without. The authors make all of their income from blogging and this book brightly lights the way for the anyone who aspires to be a pro blogger.
After reading this, I found it to be a good resource for the beginning to intermediate blogger. There is a lot of content that is blindingly obvious for anyone who has been blogging for even a short period of time, but the author's have managed to include topics that even intermediate bloggers will find useful.I have been running a relatively successful blog for over a year now with great traffic, but I have failed to monetize it. I was hoping this book would help me figure out that part of the equation. It did help add some perspective to structuring content to pull in more readers, while also doing the whole SEO thing.To those reviewers who complained that this info could be found on a variety of websites about blogging, that claim could be made about most books sold on Amazon. The purpose of going out to buy the book is convenience and reliability of information. If you want to spend days or weeks looking for and collating the same information, by all means, have at it. If you want it in a convenient package, then get this book.My only complaint, would be the price. I'd barely pay $12 for the paperback, so I'd hoped the Kindle version would be around the $10 mark. Seems a bit pricey for a digital download.
If you're new to the blogosphere then this book is brilliant, but if you're already somewhat experienced then you need to start looking elsewhere. It's really just all the blogging basics in one tome, but as far as building strategies it lacks a little bit. I do recommend it to anyone who wants to start they're own blog or has done it already and has yet to learn a little.

Though I wish this would have been longer,you can't help but attempt to read this book cover to cover in one sitting.O'Neill manages to blend the stories and the landscape of middle earth almost effortlessly with the psychological understandings of Carl Jung.The result is a richly rewarding read that any one with an interest in furthering their Lord of the Rings knowledge should dive into.Even if your understanding of Jung isn't that in depth, O'Neill goes out of his way to give a brief summary of some of the fundamentals in an attempt to make a few terms and ideas smoother for the beginning reader.At the same token,though this book does make a very convincing case for Jung's ideas in the lord of the rings mythology,no where does O'Neill claim this was the intention of Tolkien when he began writing out the chronicles of middle earth.This book simply shows how easy they both blend together.If you are a fan of lord of the rings and want to further your knowledge and wish to place a meaning behind the works of Tolkien,this book will only add weight and depth to your enthusiasm for your love of middle earth.If you are a follower of Jung's psychology than this book will give an amazing example of how to place Jungian idea's within the context of myth in a simular fashion to the amazing works of Joseph Campbell.If you are familiar with both,well than a book like this is the best of both worlds.
Yes. A very interesting read. Well written and accessible even to those untrained in Jungian philosophy.
This was one of the first books to deal with Tolkien by way of Carl Jung, and it remains one of the best. The author makes no over-reaching claims, but merely demonstrates how Tolkien's deeply personal mythology of Middle-Earth parallels the concepts of archetypes & the Collective Unconscious posited by Jung. In fact, if you've seen images from Jung's fabled "Red Book" then you'll see how similar his tree imagery is to that of Tolkien's own illustrations of Middle-Earth -- almost as if both are drawn from a shared archetypal image of Tree.The major archetypes are invoked here: Anima, Shadow, Self. In every case, the author never tries to force Tolkien's work into a pre-determined, Procrustean pigeonhole -- but he does make clear how well the Jungian model works as a means of better understanding the power of Tolkien's creation. It's this genuine mythic power that separates Tolkien from all his imitators, as he possessed not only a rich intellectual knowledge of myth, but a visceral, even spiritual knowledge of it. Middle-Earth is the full & flowering expression of an individual human being, not a flimsy & formulaic construct that mimics the surface without ever touching the substance.Whether your interest is primarily in Tolkien or Jung, this is an excellent introduction to the wisdom of their lifelong work. If I have any complaint, it's only that I wish it were longer -- but perhaps it's better this way, in that it leaves you wanting more & encourages you to seek it out on your own. Highly recommended!
A wonderful book for anyone with a taste for any combination of Tolkien, Jung and a bit of military history, which is where the author comes from. I will remember forever, "Smaug is what we in Othellos's trade would call an area weapon." I bought a first edition on a remainder table in a bookstore in St. Petersburg (Florida) in 1981 and I treasure it to this day!Informed, intelligent and highly recommended!

Prior to it reading, I'd spent a hour or 2 reading about Jung by way of a undergraduate Psych Class. The summer after I read it, I worked my way independantly through the index to and about a third of the text of Jung's collected works, and all of the popular Jung ("Man & his Symbols", etc) I could find. It drew from love of Middle Earth, introducing me to a larger, equally numinous world.
Study of the correlation between Carl Jung's theory of the collective unconscious and J.R.R. Tolkien's mythology for Middle-earth. The author was Professor of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at the United States Military Academy
I am currently reading this, borrowed from the library, and looking to buy a copy for myself (that's why I'm at this site).This is a remarkably intelligent book, yet written in a light and friendly way. The book is super small, about 100 pages and smaller than my hand. Would not have paid $12 if seen in person, maybe $5. Haven't read it yet, will update when I do
While Iceland has become more known to the rest of the world in the past decade, there is still much to be desired in the realm of folktales, language resources, and culture related materials. Thankfully, Alda is helping to turn this around. These folktales were completely new to me, and as enjoyable a read as any Grimm tale. I look forward to reading them in their original Icelandic. Next on my list: "The Little Book Of The Icelanders"!
beautiful stories ~ lovely prep for a trip to iceland
Short, sweet and packed with good stories. If you've read about Iceland, traveled to Iceland, or know anyone from Iceland, the legends in this book are totally unique.Best of all, the author gives a brief analysis of the stories explains the historical and cultural context. Totally unlike Grimm's fairytales and those of the European continent, Iceland's literature is a gem.I'm looking forward to reading more of Alda's books.
As an Icelander I enjoyed the way this book was presented and written. Non Icelanders will find this book to be entertaining as well as an insight into the culture.

I've had a fascination with Iceland (as it seems a lot of non-Icelanders do) since taking a short trip there a number of years ago. I follow a few blogs by Icelanders, including Alda Sigmundsdóttir's The Iceland Weather Report, which is how I heard about her Icelandic Folk Legends translation. Anyone who has read Grimm's Fairy Tales knows these kinds of stories aren't just for children, and I really enjoyed the Icelandic twist on this classic form. In her wonderful introduction, Sigmundsdóttir sets up the innate mysteriousness of Iceland's environment and the historical context during which these stories were first repeated to help pass the harsh dark winters. And then there's the stories themselves, which are -- as I'd hoped -- pleasingly unusual. As Sigmundsdóttir explains in the introduction, the broad outlines of some of the stories are familiar. For instance, you might recognize Rumpelstiltskin, warped and refracted through Icelandic eyes though he is. But then there are uniquely Icelandic elements, like tales of the hidden people and a positive stepmother character. And you've probably never read anything quite like "Thorgeir's Bull."
