Great book!Fantastic black and white photography, no frilly stuff here.Straight forward photos of detail work, mostly from turn of the century.I had this book about 20 years ago,and loaned it out.It never came back, no wonder.I never thought I could get an almost new copy so easily.The one the bookstore, (Snowdens Books,) shipped is in better shape than the one I used to have.If you are looking to duplicate old New Mexico style wood work on a new adobe home, buy this book before you start building!

I have to start by saying that I loved the previous book and was so excited for this one because Felicity was such a fun part of the Gentleman's Guide and I couldn't wait to see more of her and follow her on her journey. But unfortunately, this one just didn't have the same amount of of excitement and charm as the first.The biggest problem, it seemed to me, was Felicity herself and her inner monologue. It was just so repetitive. She wants to be a doctor. And she's a woman living in a man's world. We get it. So much of it just seemed to be hitting us over the head with her situation. We know. We live in this world too and don't need to be reminded over and over again that men are in charge and determine what we're allowed to do. I was hoping for more of an empowering character rather than someone whining all the time. But I do understand how frustrating her world is so there is that, I guess. But overall, I wanted her to take charge and so much of this book just seemed to be her either running from something or following someone else. She didn't ever really seem to be the one leading. And I was a little sad about that.We also seemed to lose some of her sass from the first book with being in her head so much. It still came out quite a bit when Monty and Percy were around, so those turned out to be some of the best scenes. But I also really enjoyed the ones with Sim and Joanna. Sim added a nice touch of adventure and danger and recklessness while Joanna gave us both a sense of Felicity's past as well as a balance to her idea of the "modern woman". Felicity has a built in belief that women who want a traditional role in life of motherhood and care about society and how they dress, etc. are somehow less than those who don't. It was nice to see Joanna give Felicity some of her own medicine and show her that women can be both mothers and traditional and still interesting and important. Plus, I love a book with female friendships and this had both new and old.One last thing, there isn't any romance and this book and I thougth the way Felicity explained her views on love and romance were done really well. She never does come outright and call herself asexual but those terms certainly didn't exist back then so it would be a little out of place. But she is firm in her belief that she doesn't want and doesn't need a romance or sexual relationship and I think this representation is going to be important to a lot of people. It's almost impossible to find YA books where the MC isn't involved or actively looking for a relationship so I think getting this out there in a way that explains the MCs feelings quite well is important.Overall, I enjoyed this book for it's relationships and representation but I didn't love it nearly as much as the first. I had hoped for more from Felicity and a little less repetition from her inner monologue. I still hope to read more from Mackenzi Lee!!
I waited for this book for months. The Gentleman's Guide was my absolute favorite, and Felicity's quick wit and relatable awkwardness were central to my love for that book. I was worried that The Lady's Guide wouldn't be as good, but thus far, I am extremely pleased. In many classes today I was told by teachers to stop reading under my desk. I couldn't put it down! So happy to be seeing women in historical settings standing up for themselves rather than let themselves be pushed around because that's "all they know". Mackenzie Lee is a magnificent author.
I’m a huge fan of the first book in this series, and I was so excited to read this sequel that I chucked aside my current read, tore through the mail packaging of this one and started reading it immediately upon arriving home from work the day it released completely neglecting my poor husband for the rest of the day. Totally worth it.Like the first book, this one was a lot of fun. I appreciated Felicity as our main protagonist in this one. I didn’t always love her in the first book, at times thinking she was being a bit hard on Monty, and I have to say that sometimes I didn’t like her here either but…Felicity is kind of like a porcupine. She’s a bit prickly and she doesn’t always think before acting, but this does lead her into some interesting territory on occasion. Plus, seeing everything from her point of view really gave me new perspective on her. I’m much better able to understand the relationship between her and her brother, how much she cares for him even when she’s exasperated, disappointed, or resentful toward him.Felicity, unlike her brother Monty, is extremely hard working. She knows that she’s going to be passed up for the work she wants to do, becoming a doctor, so she has to work two or three times as hard just to try and get her foot into the door. It’s natural that she would feel some resentment toward her brother, who she feels has squandered so much opportunity in life, opportunity she would love to have but doesn’t just because of her sex. I love Felicity’s tenacity in going after her dream, although at times it does feel like she’s making some rash decisions in order to achieve her goal, not thinking about the cost of those decisions. Just like her brother, Felicity definitely has some flaws, and these aspects of her character hinder her at times. This provides a great opportunity for us to see some character growth, something this author excels at.Throughout the story we’re introduced to some new characters. First we meet Sim, a young woman pirate who has taken up with the crew of their former pirate friends from the first book. She’s a bit mysterious at first and it takes Felicity, and us as readers, a little while to find out more about her. Once I did get to know her better, I couldn’t help but love her. She’s also a woman in a man’s world, so there’s a lot of common ground between her and Felicity, despite all their differences. We also meet Johanna, Felicity’s best friend growing up. We learn how close they used to be and eventually we learn what drove them apart. Mackenzi Lee is great at writing characters and letting them drive her stories, and as much as I loved Gentleman’s Guide, I feel like this is a huge step up. I love how we explore these characters and what they want out of life. Each of them have very specific dreams and obstacles. Without giving a lot away, I love that these characters exist as who they are. And as much as I did love Felicity, I think Johanna might actually be my favorite character of the three main protagonists, because of some of the things she says to Felicity when explaining how their friendship fell apart.The pacing of the story was great and the prose was strong. I rarely find myself wanting to tag quotes in books but there are definitely passages where I was like ‘man, that’s deep, I should probably quote that in my review’.“I don’t want to spend the rest of my life smelling sugar. I don’t want pastry beneath my fingernails and a man content with the hand life has dealt him and my heart a hungry, wild creature savaging me from the inside out.â€Well dang, Felicity. Tell me how you really feel. â¤Honestly, I don’t really have much negative to say about this book. The fantasy element was more of a plot device, similar to the first book, but I feel like it was incorporated a little bit better into the story this time around. But really that’s negligible to the story as a whole.I really loved this one, it definitely lived up to my expectations. 5/5 stars.
I haven't read a series out of order in years, but I jumped at a book about a young woman scientist much faster than I did at book one, which at the time of its release seemed merely like yet another gay YA novel written by a woman. Now I'm even more excited to read The Gentlemen's Guide, as The Lady's Guide was phenomenal. Lee's prose is extremely well-crafted, and her wonderful mixture of humor, friendship, adventure, and queerness was just the best cocktail for a good tale. Despite falling into a different genre, this felt like a feminist Lord of the Rings to me; it gave me that same delicious two-pals-on-a-quest vibe that I'm always hungry for. I was disappointed when it ended, and I already want there to be a third Montague Siblings book. Surely there's always a third sibling no one knows about? <3

I'll go ahead and save you the time ... there ain't one.While some whiskey books approach the (rather broad) subject from a historical angle, and others from an appreciation/tasting angle, Goldfarb approaches things ... well ... from virtually anywhere and everywhere all at once. From simple blending and infinity bottles, to "cereal milk bourbon punch" and "leathered" whiskey, Hacking Whiskey will have you chasing new ideas, scratching your head, laughing out loud, and wondering why you spent so many hours reading about whether Jack Daniel's is a bourbon or not.Do you like whiskey? Do you like fun? Buy Hacking Whiskey and your life will be complete.
Great read on techniques to get some mileage out of your booze! Loved the section on cold fingering which makes me wonder what magic could be lurking with some of my cheap swill. There's also great ideas for infusions, introducing the concepts of an infinity bottle, and so much more. If you don't think you have the means to do fun things with whiskey because of "rare" bottles and boutique brands (which is called out on in this book) this read will definitely change your mind, I love the attitude of the author!Only issue is Amazon sucks with their packaging, someone thought it would be a good idea to ship this in a bubble envelope, which resulted in the corner getting smashed.
Aaron has been a prolific writer and researcher of all things adult beverage. His background into the topic and access to key players brings a level of knowledge second to none.Chapters are short and tonthe point. I knew I’d like this book as soon as I read the section on whisky cubes and other awful gifts. Stop calling it Pappy should be a national movement, thank you! But to be serious the book helps the casual drinker open up to a world of blending and exploration of the spirit by introducing recipes and ideas to allow one to take this journey of Whisk(e)y as far as they want to travel. Great book. Thank you.

This book was a lot of fun to read! There are great recipes for custom blends and cocktails, but the thing that I was instantly drawn to was the section on infusions.I made 2 of them right away - a Heath bar infused Redbreast 12, and a Werther’s infused Old Grandad. Both were awesome, and the infusions highlighted flavors that were already in the Whiskey!I’ve already got my next infusion experiment picked out, and have several people waiting to taste it once it’s done.
Of course I was drawn in by the idea of "poor man's Pappy" or really "poorer man's Pappy", but what I found was even better.This book opened me up to exploring my own creativity and finding my palate. It revealed that enjoying the contents of your favorite bottle is just a jumping off point to new flavor directions.I can't wait to start my infinity bottle!Highly recommended!
I bought this book after listening to Aaron's interview in The Speakeasy podcast. While I'm not an avowed whiskey enthusiast (I equally enjoy all kinds of distilled spirits), I was attracted to the concept of personalizing whiskey in ways that are usually reserved to high-end bars and real whiskey nerds. The book is easy to read, entertaining and informative. And, best of all, many projects can be done with the inventory that you can find in a reasonably well stocked home bar.
I bought this for my dad for Christmas and he loves it! He started drinking whiskey and bourbon about a year ago and already has a fine collection, but this book offered some ideas to him that he hadn't thought of / heard of and really enjoyed it as a Christmas Gift!

Doris Kearns Goodwin is a superb writer, no ifs or buts about it. She could write a washing machine manual and I’d probably still gobble it up. She has a gift of conjuring up the past so vividly, so real, so believable, that you feel as if you’re right there with her as it’s happening. You can feel the excitement as she’s waiting for her father to come home from work so she can read him the baseball stats she painstakingly put together from that day’s game on the radio, you can hear the cheers in the ballpark as she gets to go to her very first Brooklyn Dodgers game, you are holding your breath with her when it comes down to the final strike and the final out in the last game of the season, you simply become that little girl with all her dreams and hopes and sometimes disappointments of growing up in 1950s America.I don’t think you have to be a baseball fan to love this book. It’s simply a good memoir all around. But if you love baseball, especially in the glory days of Jackie Robinson (who is Goodwin’s hero) you’re in for a particular treat. I don’t know what it is about that era, but it always has an especially strong pull on me. There were parallels to John Grisham’s A Painted House – an atypical Grisham novel set in 1950s Arkansas that in my opinion is among Grisham’s best – in that it also has the fate of a beloved baseball team as its central thread, together with the outsize role played by radio broadcasts of the games. We might have many more modern conveniences today, we might be better off in so many ways, but being transported back into this golden era of baseball by the magic of Goodwin’s storytelling will leave you with an almost painful yearning for a simpler, more wholesome world.
Saw the author in the Ken Burns series on Baseball. Enjoyed her comments and thought her to be someone interesting to chat with. This book is a personal account of a period of her life related to her love of baseball. I can identify with so much of it. I, too, was a Brooklyn Dodger fan who was devastated by their move to Los Angeles. I, too, lost interest in baseball for a time. She eventually joined the Red Sox ranks while I eventually became a Mets fan. We both were raised Catholic. Ms. Goodwin was a big fan of Jackie Robinson. Her account of her early years as a Dodgers fan can easily be identified with by Dodger fans of the era. Her relationship with her father that developed from and was solidified by their mutual love of the game and the team provides poignant moments. Her descriptions of her Rockville Center neighborhood with its mix of ethnicities and team loyalties should bring back memories to those of us who lived through those times. There is pathos and there is joy in some of her personal accounts of family tragedy and family blessings. This is more than merely a baseball book, it is a peek inside her life and a prompting for our own memories. More than ever she is someone I'd love to have a chat with.
This was such a good story - the baseball part of the story was so interesting that I am now a baseball fan. I've NEVER watched baseball, but Goodwin is such a skilled writer that I felt the excitement of her beloved Brooklyn Dodgers' progress to win the championship. How her love for the Dodgers is woven into the story of her early family life was so moving that it made me wish that era of baseball was still part of our lives in the way in was for her, her family, and her neighborhood. This was a touching memoir - I prayed for her mother's health, wept during their sorrow, and find myself identifying with her love and respect for her father. My father was also a self-made man, coming from very disadvantaged beginnings but he was such a bright, loving, hardworking man who never let his difficult early life affect his optimism and belief in oneself. I listened to her story first in audio format and loved it so much I bought the book for my kindle to read again. Wonderful and beautifully written, with such love in her memories - it was one of the best memoirs I've ever read.
My wife and I grew up in the same time period and could relate to her stories. She writes in such a way that you can see her in your mind doing the things she was doing. If you love baseball read the book that takes you back to a simpler time. Even if you are not a baseball fan you will enjoy hearing about the time of safe neighborhoods, corner stores, the first TVs and listening to games on the radio.If you are a Cubs fan, a Red Sox fan or a Philadelphia fan or any of the other teams that waited so long for a World Series win you will relate..

This is a fun book. More so when placed in historical contexts. The basis is this, in Germany, at this time, there was a revival in occult interest. To legitimise this, there were many self-styled seers who arose. Among them, List. According to his story, he underwent a temporary blindness through which he was granted visions, revelations, of the Runes. What follows is a handbook that explains his Runic beliefs. Included are many interesting anecdotes and cultural analyses. The book encapsulates a basic worldview, and pertains to a specific, essentially henotheistic version of God, an Aryanised Christianity and a glorification of classically Teutonic virtues.In short, it seeks to mesh all that he considered to be good of Germany, into a singular text, a weltanschauung.
List's runes are surprisingly similar to Elder Futark despite his claims of uniqueness. After carefully explaining each run he goes into a linguistic explanation of roots of Germanic words and word meanings. Some of this then applies to runes as hieroglyphs. Throughout all he weaves Aryan thought and religion. For me this was challenging to understand. I appreciate his interest and expertise. There is a super race theme to much of this. Its easy to see its appeal to Hitler. If I was more fluent in German this would have added meaning. Still, a good book on history of runes.
Made available through the efforts of translator Stephen E. Flowers, _The Secret of the Runes_ is a unique work by the German Ariosophist and Volkish rune magician Guido (von) List. Guido von List was an important figure among occultists and Pan Germanic nationalists who borrowed from the Theosophy of Madame H. P. Blavatsky as well as ancient Aryan (Teutonic and Indian) legend to create a unique system of rune magic. From his childhood days, Guido List was prone to mystical fantasy, and at a young age visited the catacombs under the Saint Stephen's Cathedral in his native Vienna and declared that he would build a Temple to Wotan there. Taking his inspiration from early Germanic religion (Wotanism, or Wuotanism) including references from Tacitus and the Eddas, neoromanticism, and later incorporating elements from Theosophy, Guido List developed a system of Armanenism which was supposedly the earliest belief system of the Germanic (Aryan) tribes. In this book, Guido List explains the role of the runes in uncovering early Germanic belief. An important substructure underlying von List's conceptions is his baptism into Roman Catholicism, which he believes serves as a cover for more ancient pagan beliefs which have been subsumed by Christianity. List shows the importance of the runes and the unique meaning of each of the runic elements. Subsequently he shows how the runes were incorporated into such systems as heraldry, freemasonry, folk tradition and belief, and even into baked goods and pastries, as well as holidays. List notes that early Germanic (Aryan) society consisted of individuals who served as farmers with three principal classes (castes), that of the peasantry, the military, and the nobility/intellegentsia (Armanen). List defines an occult doctrine in which he outlines what Flowers translates as the "biune-bifidic-dyad", the "triune-trifidic-triad", and the "multifidic multiune-multiplicity". List shows how each of these relates to God and the need for man to conform his will (his ego) to that of God. List also presents a system of reincarnation in which Aryan individuals fallen in battle are taken up into Walhalla. In fact, List himself was to write another important novel named _Carnuntum_ dealing with the Germans under the Roman empire as well as encounter an individual named Tarnhari who was a supposed reincarnation of an Aryan chieftain. List incorporated racial notions of Aryan supremacy into his writings and of course was politically aligned with Pan German nationalists who wanted to see Austria united with the other Germanies. List's ideas were used to found a masonic society, which later was to embrace National Socialism. Subsequently, many indidividuals associated with National Socialism and the NSDAP were to examine List's ideas and writings and find them interesting in furthering their own agenda. Hopefully, further materials of List's will be made available in English one day; however, currently this remains one of the few available items for those interested in studying this individual, Volkish prophet and Ariosophist in the late Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries.

Tia is a struggling single mom working as a taxi driver. When her friend calls and offers her a trip for free to Switzerland she is hesitant at first but she agrees to go. She wants to do something to make her son happy. When they arrive they are stunned by how beautiful is it. When her son goes to the kids club she is on her own for dinner. Maxim is also on his own when his daughter goes to the kid club and when he hears the hostess saying that there weren't any tables available to Tia he invites her to eat with him. Tia knows he is a wealthy man so she lies about what she does so he doesn't feel sorry for her. They end up running into each other again when she is learning how to ski so he offers to teach her. They learn that their kids are becoming fast friends so they make plans to hang out more together. By the end of her trip she knows that she's falling for him but she has told him the truth about what she does. So she tries to make a clean break and returns to her own life. What she doesn't know is that Maxim can't forget her and is coming to West Virginia to find her. Will he forgive her lie? Can they be together with how different they are?This is a great story that will draw you in from the first page. The chemistry between them is off the charts hot. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend it to any book lover.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Another great read by Holly Rayner. I really loved the characters Tia and Maxim. They were interesting, well-developed and have chemistry. The story is interesting, well-written with a happily ever after. If you like single dad romances, you will enjoy this book. In addition to receiving an arc, I purchased the book for my collection.

Tia was struggling through life as a single parent trying to provide her 10 year old son with a memorable Christmas vacation. When the call from her best friend came in indicating a free all-inclusive trip for she and Ryan to Switzerland the following day, Tia couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Tia almost blew her cover, but was saved when a the clerk realized an important client of the hotel was also trying to check in. Tia grabbed Ryan and they bolted to check out their room. After unpacking, Ryan opted to go to the kids club, leaving Tia on her own for dinner.
