I am only a few chapters in, but this book delivers powerful insight into the way that media and social media and our own need for confirmation are feeding the division of the country. Everybody needs to read this book and consider whether they may be a part of the problem.

As someone who now eschews political labels, not feeling "at home" or having confidence in either of the two major political parties as they exist today, I have found Glenn's similar journey and insight very helpful. This book examines how social media has contributed to the breakdown of civility and the increase of tribalism in American culture. If you are concerned about these issues, whether you come from a right-leaning background or a left-leaning one, you owe it to yourself to give this book a read. Hopefully, it will encourage those who read it to evaluate their own behavior towards others (as we all have likely contributed to the breakdown without realizing it), and influence the way they interact with people who have differences of opinion in the future.

If you're satisfied with the way things are going in Washington then this book isn't for you. But if you want to understand what's happening to our country's politics--and most importantly, how to fix it--then I strongly recommend "Addicted to Outrage." Few people understand Washington and the media better than Glenn Beck. In this book, he'll walk you through tough questions that encourage introspection and growth. It's well worth your time.

Thought provoking, he understands something on a broader level then most people. Essential reading for the thoughtful mind.

I've been listening to Beck for 20 years, but that doesn't mean I agree with him 100% of the time. I have spent the last 5 years working in social media and writing content for internet outlets. I have seen firsthand how outrage sells, and gets clicks and, well, we have let it become our religion and sadly also our drug of choice. We're addicted to it. I bought this on audio because listening to him speak it brings it really to life. If you're a fan of his radio program, buy the audible. Coming to this outrage addiction that society is suffering from in the same way addicts come to recovery is brilliant. Read it. Listen to it. Then get off your computer, get over your rage, stop online shaming, and go get back into your life.

Thanks again for a sleepless night with a great book. Glenn has inspired us to look at our lives and friends differently, our more left leaning friends, listen to them and react with calm. Our right leaning friends that want to start fighting, explain calmly why they should not. The way to fix our nations problems are clearly stated and can be easily carried out. Thanks to reading most of Glenn's books we have a unique prospective on the America we find ourselves in today. God bless and may the light of truth make it's way through the darkness.

"It’s all your fault”, Glenn says. Glenn’s analysis of the problem we are facing in America is that we—you and I and all of us, or most all of us—are addicted to outrage. He misses the obvious: communism has failed abysmally, as has been dramatically and tragically demonstrated over and over again. But, the left is convinced that it will work this time if only the whole western paradigm is destroyed. In this, we see the very definition of addiction: continuing to do the same thing over and over expecting different results. He has failed to see the part that postmodernism is playing in fueling the left’s last desperate attempt to prove that they are right about communism; and in attempting to prove the soundness of their theory, they find it necessary to, in typical alcoholic or drug addict fashion, destroy everything around them. Glenn is a talented man who is knowledgeable about our culture. So, it is a marvel that he seems not to have stumbled onto, as I did, Stephen Hick’s, “Explaining Postmodernism,” (published in 2004). If he had read Hicks before setting out to write “Addicted to Outrage,” he could not have failed to realize that our traditional ways of “thinking” will not save us from the left-wing assault on the balance between unity and diversity (the universe) that has been gaining momentum for the past two hundred years and is now reaching its crescendo. Our cultural conversation (the logos) in which we stand in our westernized version of the cosmos, built on the foundation of Plato’s attempted harmonization of Heraclitus’s diversity, and Parmenides’ unity, is now in its final phase of being destroyed—deconstructed. Our foundation in Lockean rational empiricism was always shaky. It did not help that Fredrich Nietzsche decided to take a hammer to Plato’s embrace of Parmenides’ unity and in embracing Heraclitus set out to destroy unity, western humanism, God, and the universe as we know it: The true world—we have abolished. What world has remained? The apparent one perhaps? But no! With the true world we have also abolished the apparent one.1Being nice and reasonable is not going to stop the Nietzschean diversity juggernaut that has embraced chaos over cosmos. The movement is out to destroy reason. “Reason,” writes Michael Foucault–one of the architects of postmodern deconstructionism–“is the ultimate language of madness.” Any person who knows anything about addiction recovery knows immediately that Glenn Back does not know anything important about addiction recovery. The subtitle of this book says it all: Thinking Like a Recovering Addict Can Heal the Country. Addiction recovery is a process of teaching people how to act—not think. “Take twelve steps,” the world of recovery urges us. Glenn insanely entitles five chapters of his book, as well as having the last word of his book be, “think.” The last paragraph says it all, “Here is what I’m asking: think. That’s all; the next time you dive headfirst into a political discussion and your blood starts flowing and your voice begins rising and gets a little strident, think. (The advice that is usually given in this circumstance is to take a breath and count to ten. AA advises this as well as prayer, call your sponsor, go to a meeting.)2 Glenn’s “think” formula does not work for addicts. A couple of favorite sayings in the world of AA are, “Our best thinking got us here;” and, “Don’t think, don’t drink, go to meetings.” Glenn is clearly unaware that he is a loyal follower of Rene Descartes: I think, therefore I am. He refuses to acknowledge that the postmodern opposition is committed to irrationally and not thinking. Addicts who want recovery, I say again, are taught to act—to take twelve actions, steps—which lead to learning— not how to think—but how to actually “hear.” To practice the presence; to learn to listen to the voice of “a power greater than ourselves.” AA, the original twelve-step program was birthed out of Rev. Frank Buchman’s Oxford Groups. Buchman was using a set of principles, which later became the steps, to teach people to hear from God. The ‘logos’ in twelve step recovery is not something you think; “it” is something you hear. Glenn, as a recovering alcoholic should have shared with his readers what the problem is, “we are selfish and self-centered…extreme examples self-will run riot, though we usually don’t think so…and we must get rid of this selfishness, we must, or it kills us.”3 It’s his job (responsibility) as a recovering alcoholic to share his experience strength and hope with others. But Glenn, though expressing hope, does not seem to have gained any of the experience and strength which is common to all ‘recovered’ 12-steppers: Step Twelve – “Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps we tried to carry this message to others….”4 Glenn may have had some sort of spiritual experience which humbled him slightly and made his compulsion less severe as the result of belonging to a 12-step group, but he does not seem to have gained the promised spiritual awakening and he does not act or speak like a person who has internalized the twelve actions (steps) necessary to have a complete psychic change. I do not mean to be judgmental. But Glenn does not yet seem to have made much progress in stepping out of self-centeredness. How else does one explain why he would try to come up with another path? In his last chapter, which he entitles, “On Saving The World,” he proposes a 10-step program which he names: My Glenn Beck coming together to save America Program (so much for the idea of humble anonymity or being a member of the “we.”)5 Actually, Glenn does not claim to be a ‘recovering (or recovered) alcoholic,’ unless I missed it somewhere. He admits to his alcoholism and says that he got better by going to AA and then to a Mormon addition recovery support group. You know he does not have real recovery when he says, “it isn’t simple or easy.” AA, however, says that it’s, “simple, but not easy.” Glenn says that “it requires strength to do it.”(recover) ; Twelve Step recovery starts with an admission of powerlessness, “6 We admitted we were powerless over…(whatever)...and that our lives had become unmanageable.” We are insane (Step 2), and we come to believe that, “God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.”7 Glenn is simply confused and is spreading this confusion all around our world. I beg him to read Stephen Hicks and listen more closely to what he and Jordon Peterson are saying about the challenges of postmodernism. Read Heather McDonald’s book on the “Diversity Delusion.” Read Russell Brand’s sober and humble outreach to an addicted world: "So whilst this program will work for you regardless of creed or lack of creed, it will also disabuse you of the notion, however conscious of it you are, that you and your drives are the defining motivations for your life. The reason I worked the 12 Steps was because I was desperate. The reason I continue to is because they have awakened me to the impossibility of happiness based on my previous worldview: that I am the centre of the world and that what I want is important." Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path.9 P.S. I feel Glenn’s pain. There is still unhealed trauma.10 It is quite painful. There is help. I pray that Glenn comes and joins us “as we trudge the Road of Happy Destiny.” P.P.S. AA was founded when Bill Wilson met Dr. Bob and said to him, “I need to talk to you or I will not be able to stay sober.”11 Both Bill and Frank before him believed that their methodology would one day say the world. We don’t need another program. We need you, Glenn. We cannot grow in our sobriety without you.1 Nietzsche, Fredrick, Beyond Good and Evil2 Addicted to Outrage (ATF) Chapters: 25. How To Think, Not What to Think; 26. THINK; 35. God is Expansive—Think Bigger; 38. T.H.I.N.K.3 AA Big Book (AA), pg 624 AA pg 595 ATF pg 3616 ATF pg 3617 AA, pg 588 AA, pg 849 AA, pg 5810(ATF) pg 286 “My mother was an alcoholic. She committed suicide. I almost did. I guess I was more of a coward. That is the way I used to look at it. I was too afraid to kill myself.” The pain here is palpable. His Wiki bio says that she died in a small boat accident on Puget Sound. She and a male companion both drowned. There were, according to the report, no witnesses. The vagueness regarding these facts is symptomatic of what is coming to be known as an addiction to “underbeing.” Lack of healing is the source of the chaos in Glenn’s life. It pervades his work. It would be great if Glenn could be free of this addiction and become the world changer he is meant to be. Maybe ALANON could help or the Adult Children of Alcoholics Program. (ACOA). This is OK, BUT should be renamed as "Maple Syrup Recipes". Nearly every recipe calls for maple syrup.

Great idea. Using this diet now. I feel so much better than I did before following it. Not hard to follow.

I'm learning to have a more plant based diet, with some animal protein added in. This book is a big help. The recipes are easy and well organized. This is just what I needed to help me stay on track.

Easy to read but needs a better set up what to eat such as breakfast...2 oz protien, 1/2 c of veggies, 1 fruit versus to eat per day...(liked about BLE)

It was as expected

Still learning and reading. This was a basic read but some grammatical errors bothered me.... hope to try some recipes.

love Pegan. Vegan was harder due to husband's health issues and need for extra protein yet still eat healthily.

The recipes are amazing

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-7-Middle schooler Sophie and her best friend Stu love the multiplayer video game Camelot's Honor. Along with their online friend Melvin, they have reached almost all of the game's highest levels. Alternating with the modern-day narrative is a parallel storyline featuring a young Arthur, Merlin, and Princess Guinevere. When Guinevere accidentally sends an important artifact to the future, the two stories converge, with Sophie and Stu ending up in the past while Arthur and Guinevere explore the 21st century. Mancusi maintains the structure of the time lines, tying them together as skills learned in life and the game prove valuable to the characters. Although the initial premise is humorous, the novel moves into emotional depth as Stu navigates a new family structure following his father's remarriage, Sophie reconciles her feelings about her mother's disappearance, and Arthur realizes his life may not have a "fairy tale" ending. All of the characters discover unexpected capabilities within themselves as they attempt to defeat the sorceress Morgana and to keep history from imploding. Dashes of romance, bullying, social anxiety, family stresses, commentary on middle school social structure, and bits of history and Arthurian lore all combine to create a thought-provoking adventure story. VERDICT Blending elements of several genres, this story will be appealing to many different types of readers.-Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmondα(c) Copyright 2011. The Once and Future Geek (The Camelot Code) by Mari MancusiA virtual game becomes real life for best friends Sophie and Stu.It's a retelling of King Arthur and Camelot and what happens when magic causes traveling to the twenty-first century.A fun adventure for the grade school readers.Touches on blended family, altruism and friendships. And that magic can solve lots.

I love everything about the legend of King Arthur, so I am happy to report this book did not disappoint. Author, Mari Mancusi did a brilliant job of putting a contemporary spin on the tale of Camelot. The story is an action-packed adventure, filled with magic, friendship, humor, and a dash of romance. I finished the book in one day, and I cannot wait for the next in the series!

Daughter is dyslexic and loves this book hasnt put it down since getting it for Xmas

Sophie and Stu have been best friends since elementary school. These two have bonded over the Camelot's Honor video game. Now in junior high school things might be changing a little. Stu has signed up for soccer because he wants his father to pay as much attention to him as he pays to Stu's stepbrother Luke. Sophie is a little jealous and wondering if she's going to lose her best friend. She's already lost her mother who told her one night that she had to leave to save the world.Meanwhile in Camelot, Arthur who is being tutored by Merlin is on the verge of pulling the sword from the stone and having his future changed. He and Guinevere have formed an unlikely but strong friendship since princesses and dishwashers don't usually hang around together. When Guinevere accidentally drops a magical scabbard into the Well of Dreams, Arthur takes the blame and falls into it to try to get the scabbard back.Arthur, however, likes it in the modern day and, having read his life story on Google, isn't eager to return to his own time. As the world changes around Sophie - no pepperoni pizza, no Camelot's Honor, and no Stu, she has to do all she can to get Arthur back where he belongs. This is a great combination of middle school life with changing friendships and video games and time travel including a society of people who are determined to keep time on the correct track. There's magic and dangerous deeds aplenty. It is also the first book in a series.

What Fed My Addiction:King Arthur!I love all things Camelot, so the concept of this book had me hooked right from the start. Kids can get a little lesson on these epic characters in a fun format! (This makes me want to reread A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.) The story gives us a lot of the original Arthurian legends and then puts them in a spin cycle.Video games.Sophie and Stu love RPG-style video games, and I could see how this one would be lots of fun. They also sounded like realistic kids—I’ve had some of these same arguments with my teenagers over the value of video games vs. “real life” and their arguments mirror Sophie and Stu’s pretty nicely. (I was glad that there was a balance between the idea that video games can be a worthwhile hobby, but it might be nice to get out and do other things sometimes too.)Multiple POVs.Sometimes too many POVs can be overwhelming, but I thought it really worked in this book. We got to see both the past and the present through multiple characters’ eyes this way. We had POVs from Sophie, Stu, Arthur and Guenivere.High Stakes.Because of the time travel aspect of the book, the fate of the whole world is at stake. Sophie and Stu worry that any changes made to the past might wipe out the whole future! What Left Me Hungry for More:Some unrealistic points. And, no, I’m not talking about the time travel. Don’t worry, I’m not one of those crazy people who reads a fantasy and says it’s not realistic. But there were other little “real world” plot points that had me scratching my head a little. (For instance, a football scene that didn’t make a lot of logical sense.) These were little things, though, and I’m guessing middle graders might not even notice them. This book has a little bit of something for every middle grade reader: video game geekiness, sports enthusiasm, historical villains, magic, mayhem and a hint of romance. It’s a surefire hit!***Disclosure: I received this book from the publisher and Rockstar Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. No other compensation was given and all opinions are my own.***

From the Author

Exerpt from "The Experiment, pg. 57" The detonation was incredible--it truly scared us. I have never in my life seen Bart in such a panic either before or after. Not only was there an explosion at the location of the experiment--there was a second, small explosion in the air above the first one. It was not clear exactly what the second explosion was, so we just stood there staring, while all the lights in the Mountain View and Palo Alto area went out. It was complete blackness. The debris from the refrigerator had landed in the high-tension wires off to the side of the parking lot. The parking lot was at least the size of a football field, and we had not considered that this could have happened. But it did. A few more moments of shock passed. We heard alarms going off, and then sirens. It was time to go home. At the Kozy house, I remember talking for a minute about the blast, and then each of us going our own separate ways very quickly. We had to get home--we had school the next day. Exerpt from "Fairfield", pg. 123Mark's group had dissolved and there were several PhDs looking for jobs. At the same time, P division, and the advanced warhead group in particular, were growing in size and in budget. They had apparently landed a new project that was reported in the Fairfield newspapers as the W911. It was also known by its nickname, ATUM, the "Advanced Tunneling Underground Munition."  To me, it simply seemed beyond belief that a new warhead would be designed so many years after the Cold War had ended, but lo and behold, there was a new nuke. The local townsfolk were chattering and the Oakland TV station carried a story on it. It seemed that there was a postulated threat of biological weapons facilities buried deeply underground in "rogue" nations. This ATUM could penetrate the earth nearby and actually tunnel its way down 100, even 200 or 300 feet underground before detonation. The blast yield on this item was tiny by nuclear standards, only 10 tons, with a correspondingly low release of radiation. The claim was that the yield was so small and the penetration so deep it would not release any radiation from the underground cavity where it detonated. It would be a nuke we could actually use if we had to. I read the article over again and again and was bewildered and amazed by this thing. It seemed to me to be too good to be true. Why, we could knock out everything they had stored underground in North Korea without any fallout on South Korea or Japan. It also worried me somewhat in ways that I could not really put into words at that time. It was probably the idea of actually using nuclear weapons. From "Quarks," pg 140 My ears cannot believe what they are hearing. There are sixty-five people attending a quark conference in Switzerland while charging their time to the NW 227 budget. That was the budget code for the ATUM penetrator calculations.  The next topic comes up.  "What about your fucking buddy?" says Getz.  "We cannot fire someone for having their own scientific opinion," Bruce said in a firm voice.  "You hired that bastard," says Getz and there is a tense chuckle.  "We'll see what we can do," says Bruce.  It sounded like the conversation was ending and I had a strong impulse to run away quickly. My fat body bounced down the stairs to the first floor and to the nearest exit. As I trudged across the parking lot, the old irony of the ATUM building changed to a new irony. They knew that the warhead would not even function as advertised, and they did not care in the slightest.

A quick read full of action and science.I can see the producers of Breaking Bad picking up this book for a movie vehicle. It has science, action, an evil villain and someone who broke out of bad. .

I was in the same circle of friends in high school in the mid 70's as the author. I learned about his book yesterday while at a celebration of life for a mutual friend. I got a copy of the book and read it later that night. It was a delightful read. I couldn't stop reading it once I started. I am not a big reader of fiction, but this was a first for me, reading a fictional book where much of the early part of the book is loosely based upon wild and crazy coming of age experiences some of which I shared in. The latter part of the book related to experiences of ethical dilemmas often encountered in a professional career and were insightful with just the right amount of detail. I think I will read this book again because it gives a lot of things to ponder over, even including some religious and moral questions. I am not sure if the author has already done this, but if he is willing he should be interviewed on an internet radio show or podcast. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

If I care what happens to the characters (both good guys and baddies), I know I liked a book. I cared what happened to the characters in this book. I want to know more about how the bad guys went bad. What happened to the members of "the gang". What happened to his first love. What the crazy lady is up to. I WANT MORE! Definitely enjoyed this story.

I enjoyed Sailor's fast-paced, colorful writing style. He weaves an entertaining and intriguing story while inspiring the reader to examine our own conscience and motives. Congratulations Bill on a great book!

Brilliant first work from a brilliant mind. A narration of the struggles of youth into adulthood seeking meaning in life, and justice in the corporate world. Looking forward to the sequel!

This book has all the right makings for a great film. I went on a wild adventure of blowing things up and getting into trouble with a very precocious and young Stanley Hall. He took me through joy, naughty laughter and deep grief - to an acceptance of life on life's terms. It was a great read. A deep read. I highly recommend this novel and would love to see it made in to a film.

This is a fantastic story that, although fiction, exemplifies realities in our governmental defense laboratories. With Sailor's interesting and hilarious development of the main character, you will see how a person who holds the scientific method and human integrity as his core value makes a significant difference for humanity by confronting evil and motivating positive change in an institution that is funded by your tax dollars. Buy it now. Curl up by the fire and savor every page as you experience Stanley's development, laugh at his adventures, and gain insight to a professional dilemma that may resonate with you. And...the ending might just contribute to your own liberation.

This is a delightful book. The reader is invited into the inner world of its main character and sees him through his childhood into young adulthood. Stan's childhood experiences are ones that many of us will relate to. Throughout this process, we come to know and love him.
