From School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-Middle schooler Sophie and her best friend Stu love the multiplayer video game Camelot's Honor. Along with their online friend Melvin, they have reached almost all of the game's highest levels. Alternating with the modern-day narrative is a parallel storyline featuring a young Arthur, Merlin, and Princess Guinevere. When Guinevere accidentally sends an important artifact to the future, the two stories converge, with Sophie and Stu ending up in the past while Arthur and Guinevere explore the 21st century. Mancusi maintains the structure of the time lines, tying them together as skills learned in life and the game prove valuable to the characters. Although the initial premise is humorous, the novel moves into emotional depth as Stu navigates a new family structure following his father's remarriage, Sophie reconciles her feelings about her mother's disappearance, and Arthur realizes his life may not have a "fairy tale" ending. All of the characters discover unexpected capabilities within themselves as they attempt to defeat the sorceress Morgana and to keep history from imploding. Dashes of romance, bullying, social anxiety, family stresses, commentary on middle school social structure, and bits of history and Arthurian lore all combine to create a thought-provoking adventure story. VERDICT Blending elements of several genres, this story will be appealing to many different types of readers.-Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmondα(c) Copyright 2011. This book is a ton of fun and perfect for its target audience. It has a great blend of video games, time travel, legend, and fun, and captures both boy and girl readers. It's fast-paced and full of adventure and action. Definitely recommended for fans of fantasy and mythology, upper elementary and middle school, boys and girls alike.
The Once and Future Geek (The Camelot Code) by Mari MancusiA virtual game becomes real life for best friends Sophie and Stu.It's a retelling of King Arthur and Camelot and what happens when magic causes traveling to the twenty-first century.A fun adventure for the grade school readers.Touches on blended family, altruism and friendships. And that magic can solve lots.
I love everything about the legend of King Arthur, so I am happy to report this book did not disappoint. Author, Mari Mancusi did a brilliant job of putting a contemporary spin on the tale of Camelot. The story is an action-packed adventure, filled with magic, friendship, humor, and a dash of romance. I finished the book in one day, and I cannot wait for the next in the series!
Daughter is dyslexic and loves this book hasnt put it down since getting it for Xmas
Sophie and Stu have been best friends since elementary school. These two have bonded over the Camelot's Honor video game. Now in junior high school things might be changing a little. Stu has signed up for soccer because he wants his father to pay as much attention to him as he pays to Stu's stepbrother Luke. Sophie is a little jealous and wondering if she's going to lose her best friend. She's already lost her mother who told her one night that she had to leave to save the world.Meanwhile in Camelot, Arthur who is being tutored by Merlin is on the verge of pulling the sword from the stone and having his future changed. He and Guinevere have formed an unlikely but strong friendship since princesses and dishwashers don't usually hang around together. When Guinevere accidentally drops a magical scabbard into the Well of Dreams, Arthur takes the blame and falls into it to try to get the scabbard back.Arthur, however, likes it in the modern day and, having read his life story on Google, isn't eager to return to his own time. As the world changes around Sophie - no pepperoni pizza, no Camelot's Honor, and no Stu, she has to do all she can to get Arthur back where he belongs. This is a great combination of middle school life with changing friendships and video games and time travel including a society of people who are determined to keep time on the correct track. There's magic and dangerous deeds aplenty. It is also the first book in a series.
What Fed My Addiction:King Arthur!I love all things Camelot, so the concept of this book had me hooked right from the start. Kids can get a little lesson on these epic characters in a fun format! (This makes me want to reread A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.) The story gives us a lot of the original Arthurian legends and then puts them in a spin cycle.Video games.Sophie and Stu love RPG-style video games, and I could see how this one would be lots of fun. They also sounded like realistic kids—I’ve had some of these same arguments with my teenagers over the value of video games vs. “real life†and their arguments mirror Sophie and Stu’s pretty nicely. (I was glad that there was a balance between the idea that video games can be a worthwhile hobby, but it might be nice to get out and do other things sometimes too.)Multiple POVs.Sometimes too many POVs can be overwhelming, but I thought it really worked in this book. We got to see both the past and the present through multiple characters’ eyes this way. We had POVs from Sophie, Stu, Arthur and Guenivere.High Stakes.Because of the time travel aspect of the book, the fate of the whole world is at stake. Sophie and Stu worry that any changes made to the past might wipe out the whole future! What Left Me Hungry for More:Some unrealistic points. And, no, I’m not talking about the time travel. Don’t worry, I’m not one of those crazy people who reads a fantasy and says it’s not realistic. But there were other little “real world†plot points that had me scratching my head a little. (For instance, a football scene that didn’t make a lot of logical sense.) These were little things, though, and I’m guessing middle graders might not even notice them. This book has a little bit of something for every middle grade reader: video game geekiness, sports enthusiasm, historical villains, magic, mayhem and a hint of romance. It’s a surefire hit!***Disclosure: I received this book from the publisher and Rockstar Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. No other compensation was given and all opinions are my own.***
