Review

A New York Times Best Seller!"There is good taste—and then, in a stratosphere all its own, there is Agnelli taste, as Marella Agnelli: The Last Swan proves so abundantly. This breathtaking tome, written by Agnelli and her niece Marella Caracciolo Chia, charts the life of the goddess of style...” –Vogue"Peel off the handsome paper dustjacket to reveal the gleaming crimson silk and gold embossed binding of this glorious book—and it is clear this is a lavish production and an intelligent and superbly produced and edited one. This is, however, a very personal book full of private houses, private apartments, gardens, family life, family snapshots, and some of the prettiest wedding photography. With interiors in over many decades…this is a heady delight. The key is that it was produced and edited by Marella Agnelli herself, along with her adoring niece. Beautiful.” –The Style Saloniste“The world has been waiting on this book forever, a definitive design guide on the world of Marella Agnelli and the homes she’s created for her family.” –Tabulous Design“Marella Agnelli: The Last Swan...Portraits by Irving Penn, Horst, and Richard Avedon detail the charmed life of one of the twentieth century’s true beauties.” –Elle   “…explores the life of a social grand dame and the life and homes she inhabits. But this is no ordinary book. This one is written by the subject herself…we get a first person account. In Marella Agnelli: The Last Swan, the Italian aristocrat and original member of the jet set, opens up her rarefied world to readers. It is a lavish tome that is part auto-biographical, part coffee table book coupled with historical details and a smattering of boldfaced names. Reading through the book or just flipping through the photographs is like going through someone’s family album and scrapbooks. There in its pages are vivid recollections of significant moments in life, snapshots of holidays at home and abroad, and wedding photographs. The book is nostalgia in its most glorious form.” –Forbes.com “Marella Agnelli The Last Swan is one of those rare books that chronicles a life within a family legacy. What you quickly find out is that this book is not so much about “the Last Swan” as it is about how she lived and what she loved and the seemingly endless resources it took to accomplish her various missions. This book is an endless source of amazement as Ms. Agnelli has created “worlds” that are unknown to most of us. Even those who are not botanically inclined will note that the incredible world of art she created outdoors is astounding. Mind boggling. Marella Agnelli: The Last Swan is a collection of rare beauty that allows us to live within her world if only while enjoying this book.” –New York Journal of Books   "...this book is perfect for any individual interested in fashion, high society and glorious homes, and it deserves a place in your library!" –PoliticalStyle.com   “…impressive new monograph…” –Tory Burch Blog“This is one book where the story is just as compelling as the photos and I loved learning more about Marella Agnelli’s incredible life. It’s definitely a must read for autumn." –Habitually Chic"Style icon Marella Agnelli shares her personal memoirs with this stunning publication..." –Bal Harbour Magazine“Gaze over the exclusive world of one of the twentieth century’s most glamorous and alluring women, as seen through her private homes and garden that are full of timeless elegance.” –Society Diaries

Marella Agnelli’s story is quite remarkable. Although her mother was born in Peoria, Illinois, she managed to marry into Italian nobility. Marella did even better, marrying Gianni Agnelli, probably the wealthiest man in Italy at the time. This beautiful volume is an autobiography/biography with some parts written by Marella and others by her niece. What is unique is that their stories are built around the magnificent properties that the Agnelli’s acquired and decorated in such splendid fashion. These histories are fascinating, evoking a life style that seems like a fairy tale today. And the photographs are stunning, beautifully composed in a manner that instantly transports the reader to the exotic locations. One can enjoy the cosy, elegant intimacy of one of Marella’s reading rooms, stroll through the palatial entrance hall in one of her estates or wander through brilliantly sculptured gardens. One will always return from these vicarious journeys with a soft smile and a desire to embark again.

Stunning book! Covers the life of Marella Agnelli, which is well lived in some of the most beautiful settings. Private photographs of Mrs. Agnelli's homes and gardens with details about the way she has lived her life. Long gone are the days when living, entertaining and beauty were an art. This book is full of incredible photographs that tell the story of a life that is rich and rewarding.

This is a beautiful book, much larger than what i had envisioned, with many photos of Marella & Gianni's homes & artwork. I didn't give it 5 stars because it was somewhat lacking in the personal life details. Not that i expect a "True Confession" type, but the family has been through many travails as well as spectacular success so i expected more. Nonetheless, it is worth every penny, i am enjoying it thoroughly.

I was really surprised with this book but in a pleasant way. I thought it would just be about Marella's style but it really is such a unique book about a very special woman. The interiors and gardens ( with the exception of the ghastly wicker furniture ) are so different, each so distinct and are really inspiring. I love all the old black and white pictures and it's too bad that Marella hasn't published more of her own photography. That would definitely be interesting to see !

Beautiful presentation and a fascinating story of a woman who did not lose her dignity in telling her story. I was prompted to look further into the family history and it is full of drama and tragedy proving, yet again, money makes no difference. I loved this book.

I am so glad to have waited for the right moment to go through this book. When I closed it, four hours have gone by, unnoticed. To read this book is like watching a swan glade through a crystal clear lake. Mme. Agnelli's biography is a testimonial of flawless good taste, and there is where the importance of this book resides, not in the wealth, nor in the amazing circunstances of her life, but in the sobriety and elegance of her own words used to describe her impressions, love for nature and refined interiors.

Loved loved this book. The author's descriptive ability made it just like I was there watching over the shoulder of the main character. Oppulence and great humor. Totally recommend. What a great trip!

Every Rizzoli book is a collectors item. this book is not an exception! this lady was so refined and talented.Nice to read about such a lady, see her talented decorating. The book was very enjoyable to read. I'm sure I will read and look at it mant times

Cure Unknown: Inside the Lyme Epidemic, by Pamela Weintraub

Review

“Pamela Weintraub’s book is compelling, clear and troubling.”–Patti Adcroft, editorial director of Discover magazine“In Cure, Unknown, Pamela Weintraub has produced both the definitive book about Lyme disease and associated disorders and a survivor’s account of a grueling medical odyssey. Weintraub is a masterful science writer and storyteller, and she tackles the quarrels and quagmires surrounding this baffling illness with intelligence and pathos. This is an important and unforgettable book, destined to make a lasting contribution to the field of investigative health journalism.”–Kaja Perina, editor in chief of Psychology Today“A thoroughly researched and well-written account of the disease’s controversial history.” --Jane Brody, New York Times ”Pam Weintraub, veteran science writer, weaves personal narrative with hard-hitting investigative journalism to bring the underground epidemic of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases up from under theradar.” -Rebecca Wells, author of Ya-Yas in Bloom and Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. ”I sometimes wonder if the only investigative writers who will possess the necessary temerity to remove the white gloves and tackle these putative experts to the ground will be those, like Weintraub and thelate Randy Shilts, whose personal experience demands that they follow the rocky trail that leads to the truth.” -Hillary Johnson, author of Osler’s Web: Inside the Labyrinth of the Chronic Fatigue SyndromeEpidemic ”Millions suffering from symptoms of a mysterious disease need suffer confusion and loss no longer. If you want to know the real story behind Lyme disease and how to find your way back to health, read this book.” -Mark Hyman, MD, author of the New York Times bestseller, UltraMetabolism. ”Science journalism at its best.” --Amiram Katz, MD, Clinical Faculty, Neurology Department, Yale School of Medicine ”Weintraub turns a tragic yet eye-opening experience into a shocking exposure of what can happen when egos, greed, and peer pressure supercede objective evidence, allowing patients to suffer chronic, disabling illness.” –Donna Chavez, Booklist ”Exhaustively researched and highly recommended.” –Tina Neville, Library Journal ”A tale of biological complexities, scientific turf battles, political intrigue, human egos and money – lots of it.” –Dorothy Kupcha Leland, Sacramento Bee ”Living with Lyme gave Weintraub both the insight and the dogged ambition to find out some truths... rather than remaining stuck at the pro-Lyme, anti-Lyme debate, Weintraub spent many hoursinterviewing researchers who are experts in the ticks that spread Lyme, and the bacterial spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, that causes it. What she found is that these researchers -- at places like theState University of New York at Stony Brook on Long Island, and the University of California at Davis -- are slowly figuring out how complex the bacteria and the disease are. And Weintraub said, theseresearchers, by and large, confirm what many Lyme patients have learned through bitter experience -- the bacteria can cause a persistent infection that may not be treated easily by a couple ofweeks of antibiotics.” --Robert Miller, Danbury News-Times ”The view from inside the tick tornado: Sober but scary...A science and health journalist, Weintraub writes clearly and passionately about a mysterious illness that has confounded physicians, patients andscientists for more than three decades, while she tries to balance personal narrative and objective journalism... a comprehensive and compassionate guide to a dreaded illness named after a bucolic,tick-infested town on Long Island Sound.” --Bill Williams, Hartford Courant ”In the war of information on Lyme disease, patient activist groups have started from a marked disadvantage to the medical establishment in terms of visibility and credibility. That may be changing, and science journalist Pamela Weintraub’s new book, “Cure Unknown: Inside the Lyme Epidemic” (St. Martin’s Press), could be one reason. Weintraub, a senior editor at Discover magazine, uses her family’s protracted Lyme odyssey as the jumping off point for an exploration into the history, politics and, predominantly, the patient experience of the tick-borne disease.” --- Susan Morse, Washington Post

I agree Cure Unknown is the most readable expose explaining why Lyme Disease is so difficult to obtain testing, diagnosis and treatment for, in the United States. This book discusses actual examples of health insurers, including Kaiser Permanente, pressuring state medical boards, to persecute Physicians, for pursuing more effective Lyme Disease treatments.Cure Unknown also thoroughly documents how the CDC and various state medical boards, especially in New York and Missouri state essentially conducted an unscientific witch hunt against Physicians who obtained superior Lyme Disease treatment outcomes, using longer, more expensive treatments.Financial conflicts of interest, including patents for antibodies, Lyme Borrelia bacteria strains, Lyme vaccines, Lyme tests and paid "professional witness" fees, corrupted almost all of the Infectious Disease Society of America, IDSA, members who determined that antibodies to a European strain of the Borrelia spirochete, would be used to determine whether Americans test positive for Lyme Disease. The corrupt, unscientific IDSA decision has caused millions of Americans to suffer horrendously and needlessly.Fortunately, newer more sensitive Lyme Disease tests, such as the Neuroscience Lyme ITT test, find Lyme Disease about 90 percent of the time, instead of approximately 50 percent of the time. Newer more sensitive Lyme Disease tests will likely also be resisted by the flat earth footdraggers, at the CDC and Infectious Disease Society of America and various state medical societies, including New York state. At least Labcorp and Quest Diagnostics, the nation's two largest clinical labs have abandoned the CDC criteria. If you have a positive Ig M 23 Lyme Western Blot band, there is about a 96 percent probability you have an active Lyme Borrelia infection. If you have a positive Ig M 41 Lyme Western Blot Band, your immune system is actively fighting a bacterial infection, which is most likely Borrelia.I agree with other readers that Cure Unknown fails to discuss herbal treatments or intravenous Vitamin C, which have produced good Lyme Treatment outcomes.I also agree that the individual case histories should be written in a continous narrative, instead of splitting them into discontinous stories, interupted by discussions about various researchers, Physicians, etc. While the public usually associates Lyme Disese with arthritis, Weintraub helps publicize investigations by Brian Fallon, MD, Virginia Sherr, MD and other Physicians who have found Lyme disease causes neurological and psychiatric symptoms, such as severe anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, chronic fatigue, headaches and multiple sclerosis symptoms more often than joint problems.Weintraub also mentions that Robert Bransfield, another Psychiatrist, found Lyme Disease in 22 percent of autistic patients and was able to resolve excess agression in some patients, after treating them for Lyme disease.Dr. Burrascano discusses a dramatic reversal of Alzheimer's Disease, when he treated a bedridden lady who had to be fed, dressed and cleaned, and could not speak. After antibiotic treatment for Lyme Disease, she could drive, balance a checkbook and take care of her family. It was exciting to learn that Babesia treatment reduced Pamela's headaches. It was sad to learn Weintraub moved from a wooded suburb to the concrete canyons of New York City, to avoid tick bites. This book is very well researched and documented, with an extensive bibliography.Steven Sponaugle

This book is an amazing undertaking--written about her own journey with Lyme, as well as her entire family's journey, as well as doing a masterful job of explaining a lot of the research around Lyme. And the politics. Oh, the politics. I truly appreciated such a comprehensive view of the disease, even as I felt like the book went on and on! The author explained that near the end, and it became apparent that she was having a hard time wrapping it up because she kept watching the unfolding of events and hoping for a happy ending. I appreciated the grit of this woman and her husband. They held their marriage and family together in the face of the disease and all its ramifications. The state of science and medicine in relation to Lyme disease is a tragedy. Read this book, especially if you or near and dear ones have Lyme. Then write your senators and your congressman. This disease needs to be depoliticized and the insurance companies need a big kick in the pants! Thanks for this book.

THis book is really hard to put down. It was a little hard to get into, but once you do, you'll be fascinated. This book covers the disease, the science, the politics, the medical/pharma establishment, and many other issues, including the toll this disease takes on people and families. My 8 yr old had lyme, which went undiagnosed by the "best" drs at Children's Hosp in Boston. Nobody looked at the whole picture till I got the a"Lyme-literate" doctor. Child is well after 3 mos on antibiotics. Weintraub's book helped me understand the situation, and I am indebted to her for that. Really, this book is an eye opener, especially if you live in an endemic area like New England. FIVE bright stars. THank you P. Weintraub, you are amazing, be well. (PS I'm getting a copy for my primary care's doctors office, they need to read this and understand the consequences of not being Lyme literate.)

This up-to-date book (published in 2008) tells it all. It not only is about Lyme Disease as a bad disease, but also details all the controversy between the Infectious Disease Society of America (the professional society of doctors specializing in infectious diseases and advocating what might be called a "traditional" approach)and many of the doctors who treat the sickest of the Lyme Disease patients. The author includes many personal stories of patients who did not get better under the "traditional" treatment. Her book ends with more than 40 pages of references and notes. Pamela Weintraub does a splendid job of supporting her statements.

This is a another brilliant book on Lyme by a mother and wife who has lived through the Lyme epidemic in USA ad come out as a survivor. her children suffered the disease as well and needed to move out of a heavily wooded environment so that they were not re infected. The author describes the enormous battles and cost tot he family, emotionally, financially, psychologically and socially. The battle against Lyme is described in a very realistic way so the reader shares the anguish of a family fighting Lyme disease. the final breakthrough came for Pamela when she had 3 very intensive rounds of IV antibiotics which took her to bed each time. These 3 month battles were devastating but in the end she conquered Lyme in her own body. She then took on the battle of winning her son' health back. The book is written in an autobiographical way- it is a very compelling read!

the usual entertaining story

I love books that draw you in and allow you to escape into the world of the main character. Mia King does that and her novels take just days (or hours in my case) to read. Marissa Price is so interesting and what happens to her life is amusing, and it's interesting how one can like her more and more as this story line progresses. I love a good story with interesting characters that's an entertaining read. My book club also loved this book for the interesting turns and twists in the story and the awesome recipes in the book. We all made a dish from the recipes and brought it to our book club meeting - it was paradise!! A fantastic book club read!

This was a fun read. There were some parts that seemed to drag longer than other subjects, but otherwise I really liked how the book ended. I'm looking forward to reading her other books!

Yes, a Sweet Life living in Hawaii! A wonderful story on how Hawaii can challenge everyone and if you stay true to yourself it welcomes you fully! Beautiful story...all of Mia's stories are great and I look forward to reading her next one...when is it coming out?

This is a great book. I was happy with the service. I would reomment this book to everyone. Once you start it you won't wnat to put it down.

I would recommend this book to anyone that has ever thought, desired, wondered, or moved to aremote and/or tropical island. An easy read with good character development. Also, the lead female character shows her strength and tenacity through the entire story.

I'm not sure that there is technically a genre called "mom lit," but I think I'd have to classify SWEET LIFE by Mia King as just that. SWEET LIFE is the story of Marissa, a wife and mother, who gives up her career and apartment in Manhattan to move to Hawaii for her husband's job. Oh and by the way, she hopes that by moving to Hawaii, she can save her marriage. This book definitely sounded like one that I'd enjoy with lots of family dynamics and conflict; and I'm happy to say that I did like it -- a lot. I am so glad that there are books out there for those of us who are "mature" (married with children) and that have interesting female characters.I really enjoyed SWEET LIFE. It is a great story with some terrific and memorable characters. It's a relatively light, easy read; however, it also touches on some very serious (and very real) issues that affect many women in today's society. I have a feeling that you will be reminded of yourself, or even some of the women you know, when you read about the female characters in this story. I loved how this book showed the strength and resilience of women, and how women will pull together to help others.I have to admit that I didn't always love Marissa. Maybe it's because I saw in her things that I don't like about myself, but she definitely got on my nerves in the beginning of the book. I found her to be very self-centered and at times almost arrogant; however, I like how the author developed her character. She was definitely flawed, and yet I found myself rooting for her. In so many ways, SWEET LIFE was really a coming-of-age story from Marissa (even though she was a woman in her early 40.) As a reader, I enjoyed seeing Marissa discover things about her relationships and her life in general that made her a better person. I was actually quite touched by this story, and it ended up warming my heart a great deal.As a child, my family moved a lot so I could totally identify to the parts of the story about acclimating to a new environment and a new culture. While I haven't experienced a move quite as drastic as moving to Hawaii, I could understand Marissa's frustrations and feelings of being an outsider. I thought Ms. King did a wonderful job of showing the huge differences between living in Manhattan and living in Hawaii. In fact, I thought her descriptions of Hawaii and its people were perfect.I think what I enjoyed most about SWEET LIFE were the overall messages in this story. After I finished this book, I just had to smile. This book showed the importance of family and friends as well as finding what makes you happy. I don't think I will ever tire of books that make me think about those themes. Of course, I also liked how Marissa discovered things about herself and realized what was truly important in her life.My book club is all 30- and 40-somethings, so I think SWEET LIFE would be a great discussion book for my group. I think many women will relate to at least some aspects of the females in this novel. There is a reading guide available which further delves into the themes of marriage, family, trust, self awareness, and friendships. I also think hosting a meeting for this book would be so much fun. Since the story takes place in Hawaii, you could do an entire island-themed party. And since food is such a huge part of this story (there are even recipes included in the back of the book), you would have no problem coming up with some awesome treats!SWEET LIFE is the first book that I've read by Ms. King, but it won't be my last. I already have TABLE MANNERS and can't wait to read it. Ms. King has a fantastic website that you really need to check out. She has a special recipe box section where you will find lots of delicious recipes and even recipe tips. She even has entertaining/hostess ideas, related food trivia, and guest author recipes. I think her website is a terrific resource for your next party or book club meeting.

"Sweet Life" by Mia King is pure beach reading...even if it's in mid-winter and the coast is miles away. The author, who has a flare for travel vignettes, re-creates such a vivid, off-the-beaten-path-where-the-locals-live slice of Hawaii that you can almost smell the salty ocean mingle with the fresh plumeria in the air...pass me a chunk of guava, please, ummm...now back to the book.An extra star goes to an interesting plot that involves the main character, Marissa and her husband Paul, along with their young daughter, undertaking a major relocation from Manhattan to Hawaii due to Paul's job promotion. Oops, one star down; some of the plot is a bit too incredulous. I mean, what are the odds of meeting an annoying fellow passenger on an airplane, only to end up roommates who transform from total opposites to total friends? Other unrealistic situations bring Marissa together with two other women who end up being Marissa's roommates after her husband skips out on her. Since the plot forces many of the puzzle pieces in the main character's life together, I could not get fully lost in the book.On the plus side, call me Pollyanna, but I love the fact that Paul, Marissa's husband who is on the brink of a breakdown, ends up being a squeaky-clean committed husband. It is a refreshing break from a divorce-thirsty society and the way Mia sets up these circumstances is quite ingenious, but definitely credible. The author's recipes (her hallmark) add another layer of sweetness to the book. Call it a day, grab a blanket and head to the beach of your mind, this book is meant for pure paradisiacal escape.Stacy Lytwyn Maxwell, Author/Book Reviewer/TeacherCONSUMMATE CONNECTICUT: DAY TRIPS WITH PANACHE
