Review

“Pamela Weintraub’s book is compelling, clear and troubling.”–Patti Adcroft, editorial director of Discover magazine“In Cure, Unknown, Pamela Weintraub has produced both the definitive book about Lyme disease and associated disorders and a survivor’s account of a grueling medical odyssey. Weintraub is a masterful science writer and storyteller, and she tackles the quarrels and quagmires surrounding this baffling illness with intelligence and pathos. This is an important and unforgettable book, destined to make a lasting contribution to the field of investigative health journalism.”–Kaja Perina, editor in chief of Psychology Today“A thoroughly researched and well-written account of the disease’s controversial history.” --Jane Brody, New York Times ”Pam Weintraub, veteran science writer, weaves personal narrative with hard-hitting investigative journalism to bring the underground epidemic of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases up from under theradar.” -Rebecca Wells, author of Ya-Yas in Bloom and Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. ”I sometimes wonder if the only investigative writers who will possess the necessary temerity to remove the white gloves and tackle these putative experts to the ground will be those, like Weintraub and thelate Randy Shilts, whose personal experience demands that they follow the rocky trail that leads to the truth.” -Hillary Johnson, author of Osler’s Web: Inside the Labyrinth of the Chronic Fatigue SyndromeEpidemic ”Millions suffering from symptoms of a mysterious disease need suffer confusion and loss no longer. If you want to know the real story behind Lyme disease and how to find your way back to health, read this book.” -Mark Hyman, MD, author of the New York Times bestseller, UltraMetabolism. ”Science journalism at its best.” --Amiram Katz, MD, Clinical Faculty, Neurology Department, Yale School of Medicine ”Weintraub turns a tragic yet eye-opening experience into a shocking exposure of what can happen when egos, greed, and peer pressure supercede objective evidence, allowing patients to suffer chronic, disabling illness.” –Donna Chavez, Booklist ”Exhaustively researched and highly recommended.” –Tina Neville, Library Journal ”A tale of biological complexities, scientific turf battles, political intrigue, human egos and money – lots of it.” –Dorothy Kupcha Leland, Sacramento Bee ”Living with Lyme gave Weintraub both the insight and the dogged ambition to find out some truths... rather than remaining stuck at the pro-Lyme, anti-Lyme debate, Weintraub spent many hoursinterviewing researchers who are experts in the ticks that spread Lyme, and the bacterial spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, that causes it. What she found is that these researchers -- at places like theState University of New York at Stony Brook on Long Island, and the University of California at Davis -- are slowly figuring out how complex the bacteria and the disease are. And Weintraub said, theseresearchers, by and large, confirm what many Lyme patients have learned through bitter experience -- the bacteria can cause a persistent infection that may not be treated easily by a couple ofweeks of antibiotics.” --Robert Miller, Danbury News-Times ”The view from inside the tick tornado: Sober but scary...A science and health journalist, Weintraub writes clearly and passionately about a mysterious illness that has confounded physicians, patients andscientists for more than three decades, while she tries to balance personal narrative and objective journalism... a comprehensive and compassionate guide to a dreaded illness named after a bucolic,tick-infested town on Long Island Sound.” --Bill Williams, Hartford Courant ”In the war of information on Lyme disease, patient activist groups have started from a marked disadvantage to the medical establishment in terms of visibility and credibility. That may be changing, and science journalist Pamela Weintraub’s new book, “Cure Unknown: Inside the Lyme Epidemic” (St. Martin’s Press), could be one reason. Weintraub, a senior editor at Discover magazine, uses her family’s protracted Lyme odyssey as the jumping off point for an exploration into the history, politics and, predominantly, the patient experience of the tick-borne disease.” --- Susan Morse, Washington Post

I agree Cure Unknown is the most readable expose explaining why Lyme Disease is so difficult to obtain testing, diagnosis and treatment for, in the United States. This book discusses actual examples of health insurers, including Kaiser Permanente, pressuring state medical boards, to persecute Physicians, for pursuing more effective Lyme Disease treatments.Cure Unknown also thoroughly documents how the CDC and various state medical boards, especially in New York and Missouri state essentially conducted an unscientific witch hunt against Physicians who obtained superior Lyme Disease treatment outcomes, using longer, more expensive treatments.Financial conflicts of interest, including patents for antibodies, Lyme Borrelia bacteria strains, Lyme vaccines, Lyme tests and paid "professional witness" fees, corrupted almost all of the Infectious Disease Society of America, IDSA, members who determined that antibodies to a European strain of the Borrelia spirochete, would be used to determine whether Americans test positive for Lyme Disease. The corrupt, unscientific IDSA decision has caused millions of Americans to suffer horrendously and needlessly.Fortunately, newer more sensitive Lyme Disease tests, such as the Neuroscience Lyme ITT test, find Lyme Disease about 90 percent of the time, instead of approximately 50 percent of the time. Newer more sensitive Lyme Disease tests will likely also be resisted by the flat earth footdraggers, at the CDC and Infectious Disease Society of America and various state medical societies, including New York state. At least Labcorp and Quest Diagnostics, the nation's two largest clinical labs have abandoned the CDC criteria. If you have a positive Ig M 23 Lyme Western Blot band, there is about a 96 percent probability you have an active Lyme Borrelia infection. If you have a positive Ig M 41 Lyme Western Blot Band, your immune system is actively fighting a bacterial infection, which is most likely Borrelia.I agree with other readers that Cure Unknown fails to discuss herbal treatments or intravenous Vitamin C, which have produced good Lyme Treatment outcomes.I also agree that the individual case histories should be written in a continous narrative, instead of splitting them into discontinous stories, interupted by discussions about various researchers, Physicians, etc. While the public usually associates Lyme Disese with arthritis, Weintraub helps publicize investigations by Brian Fallon, MD, Virginia Sherr, MD and other Physicians who have found Lyme disease causes neurological and psychiatric symptoms, such as severe anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, chronic fatigue, headaches and multiple sclerosis symptoms more often than joint problems.Weintraub also mentions that Robert Bransfield, another Psychiatrist, found Lyme Disease in 22 percent of autistic patients and was able to resolve excess agression in some patients, after treating them for Lyme disease.Dr. Burrascano discusses a dramatic reversal of Alzheimer's Disease, when he treated a bedridden lady who had to be fed, dressed and cleaned, and could not speak. After antibiotic treatment for Lyme Disease, she could drive, balance a checkbook and take care of her family. It was exciting to learn that Babesia treatment reduced Pamela's headaches. It was sad to learn Weintraub moved from a wooded suburb to the concrete canyons of New York City, to avoid tick bites. This book is very well researched and documented, with an extensive bibliography.Steven Sponaugle

This book is an amazing undertaking--written about her own journey with Lyme, as well as her entire family's journey, as well as doing a masterful job of explaining a lot of the research around Lyme. And the politics. Oh, the politics. I truly appreciated such a comprehensive view of the disease, even as I felt like the book went on and on! The author explained that near the end, and it became apparent that she was having a hard time wrapping it up because she kept watching the unfolding of events and hoping for a happy ending. I appreciated the grit of this woman and her husband. They held their marriage and family together in the face of the disease and all its ramifications. The state of science and medicine in relation to Lyme disease is a tragedy. Read this book, especially if you or near and dear ones have Lyme. Then write your senators and your congressman. This disease needs to be depoliticized and the insurance companies need a big kick in the pants! Thanks for this book.

THis book is really hard to put down. It was a little hard to get into, but once you do, you'll be fascinated. This book covers the disease, the science, the politics, the medical/pharma establishment, and many other issues, including the toll this disease takes on people and families. My 8 yr old had lyme, which went undiagnosed by the "best" drs at Children's Hosp in Boston. Nobody looked at the whole picture till I got the a"Lyme-literate" doctor. Child is well after 3 mos on antibiotics. Weintraub's book helped me understand the situation, and I am indebted to her for that. Really, this book is an eye opener, especially if you live in an endemic area like New England. FIVE bright stars. THank you P. Weintraub, you are amazing, be well. (PS I'm getting a copy for my primary care's doctors office, they need to read this and understand the consequences of not being Lyme literate.)

This up-to-date book (published in 2008) tells it all. It not only is about Lyme Disease as a bad disease, but also details all the controversy between the Infectious Disease Society of America (the professional society of doctors specializing in infectious diseases and advocating what might be called a "traditional" approach)and many of the doctors who treat the sickest of the Lyme Disease patients. The author includes many personal stories of patients who did not get better under the "traditional" treatment. Her book ends with more than 40 pages of references and notes. Pamela Weintraub does a splendid job of supporting her statements.

This is a another brilliant book on Lyme by a mother and wife who has lived through the Lyme epidemic in USA ad come out as a survivor. her children suffered the disease as well and needed to move out of a heavily wooded environment so that they were not re infected. The author describes the enormous battles and cost tot he family, emotionally, financially, psychologically and socially. The battle against Lyme is described in a very realistic way so the reader shares the anguish of a family fighting Lyme disease. the final breakthrough came for Pamela when she had 3 very intensive rounds of IV antibiotics which took her to bed each time. These 3 month battles were devastating but in the end she conquered Lyme in her own body. She then took on the battle of winning her son' health back. The book is written in an autobiographical way- it is a very compelling read!
