I loved reading about her. What a fascinating woman! I wish there was more about her as a mother - I know that’s hard, when her children are alive and so visible - and there are hints of how difficult it was. And, somewhat conversely, would there have been as much about her impatience with subordinates had she been a man? But overall a fascinating look at a hugely important woman.

This woman is an unsung hero.

I was so impressed with the life of Eunice Kennedy! Such a picture of stamina, drive and resolve! I loved reading about her dedication to motherhood and the unborn. She was a visionary with revolutionary ideas for her time - using Kennedy monies to champion the disabled and mentally challenged. A great read that also keeps the reader abreast of the Kennedy clan and their lives.

I’ve been so busy reading about all the other Kennedys, I barely knew anything about Eunice Kennedy Shriver. I knew that she was married to Sargent, that she was Maria’s mother, and the founder of the Special Olympics, but there is so much more. Of course we all know how accomplished her big brothers were and even little Ted, but Eunice was quite something. Always seeking her father’s approval, she was one determined, tough cookie. And smart too. The new biography by Eileen McNamara, EUNICE: THE KENNEDY WHO CHANGED THE WORLD, is quite an eye-opener not only about her successes but about some areas that will surprise about her youth, her ambitions, and social responsibilities. Overall, she comes across as an extremely driven woman who was certainly ahead of her time. Having grown up in such a competitive environment and in a family where men were revered, and women were groomed to take care of themselves and education was secondary, I’d say she did mighty fine for herself. She didn’t give a lick about whether her dress was wrinkled, she was much more interested in getting a bill passed for those who were less fortunate.Young Eunice was in the middle of her family. She was closest in age to her sister Rosemary and when Rosemary was sent off to live a facility apart from the family and later had a lobotomy, unbeknownst to the rest of her siblings, her world was a bit shaken. At that time, she became closer to her brother Jack and the causes that she was fighting for became even more important to her and she urged him to help her fight for them once he was in office.Unlike her friends and other debutantes of her generation who were getting married at a young age, Eunice was not in a hurry even though her future husband and others were courting her like mad. She was caught up in her career. Prior to that, her education. She went from Manhattanville, where her mother had gone to school and then on to Stanford at Jack’s urging.Well-traveled, an avid athlete, despite her poor health, much like her brother Jack, nothing held her back. Eunice was so curious and interested in people with disabilities. However, she looked at it from a different perspective than was common at the time. She saw someone like her sister Rosemary and believed that you should see their talent rather than what they could not do. She was immensely interested in women and children who were caught up in the foster care system or who had committed crimes and wanted to break the cycle. She advocated for them.A lifelong pursuit of helping the intellectually disabled, a devoutly religious woman, a woman who was a feminist before the word even existed, Eunice Kennedy Shriver was a passionate believer who, when she set her mind to something, she made it happen. It’s interesting to think that had she been born later in time, she might have been another Kennedy in office and her brothers might have been campaigning for her, just as she did for them. This book is a fascinating look at how Eunice’s life evolved within the Kennedy family as well as a unique viewpoint of what was going on in the world around her, allowing her to make great contributions to it.

New insight into the Kennedy family. I learned the stamina it took to live as a member of such a powerful group. And I felt the closeness of the children with each other despite the distance or in spite of the parents.

Incredible story. Working DC lobbying like the best. And doing it for really underserved groups. Read it and then get to work on your ideas!

What an energetic woman in the Kennedy clan who never gave up on helping those with mental disabilities. She still wanted to do more even on her deathbed. What a beautiful, vibrant family!

Wow, this was a great book. I've read other books about the Kennedy's but this book took me behind the scene. Eunice had a lot going on in her own life to warrant recognition.
