Only you can say if you want another Bible or a specialized one but this edition has several things to recommend it. There are books with bigger print- and hardcover- however those bibles weigh between ten and twenty (for fancy ones with thick leather and paper) pounds so they aren't really suitable for carrying to class or church every day and they don't open flat and most all the ones i found were in the King James translation. Which brings us to this book. The font is much larger than a 'standard' bible- not the biggest print available but probably around a 12 point font= two or three times a large in print as most other bibles. So for most they'll be able to make this out- though if you wear glasses already you'll probably want to keep them on as you read this; if you feel you have major vision impairment and want a large print bible you'll probably need a 20 font print (giant not extra large as this is) which are available but the book is going to be huge and heavy at that font size. With this present edition the print is much larger but because the design of the bible is square and the cover is fake leather (yes this one has a fake leather cover) it's much lighter while still being easier for most to read without a magnifier of some kind. Also the translation is according to most scholars much more accurate that the King James for example- and it's written in much plainer english so it's much easier for most people to folllow. To sum up the print is two or three times bigger than most bibles- it's light and sturdy enough to carry to class or services everyday and the translation is more modern in phrasing yet more accurate too than earlier versions- the paper itself seems like the same as i've noticed in every bible but unlike some reviewers I didn't find it to be see through- so if you need these specs in a bible- light but with bigger print you might want to give this one a try.
This Bible is one the best Bibles ever! The print size is large and bold so it makes reading with ease there is absolutely no eye strain that one might experience from bibles with small print. This Bible I highly recommend for anyone who wears prescription lenses. Also, this Bible is the perfect size for holding, while reading, studying or laying on a lecturn while lecturing because it fits wonderfully and comfortably in one's hands, the book seam is designed so that the Bible lays open flat. It also has a wonderful bonus in that it comes with the Apocrypha which is a rare find. The size of this bible is absolutely perfect and I love the quality and feel of the pages. This bible would make for a wonderful gift or study tool I highly recommend this bible.
I didn't notice until it was too late to return this Bible, but the Book of Luke has pages 81-96 missing. Imagine my surprise when my Bible study leader said to turn to Luke 6:47 and there was nothing there between Luke 1 and Luke 11. For all I know there are other pages missing in this Bible, but this makes it pretty unusable for me. This wasn't an inexpensive Bible and I am disappointed in the quality control.
Although pages are really thin (typical of Bible paper), the leather and construction is top quality. I really enjoy this uniquely shaped Bible. It include the Apocrypha, which is a plus for me. The introduction is great for understanding why this version was made and why the changes were made in this version.
I was trying to find a new revised standard version (NRSV) bible with text large enough to read. I like that the NRSV translation uses modern language (forgive us our sins vs. forgive us our trespasses) which is easier to understand. Most standard print bibles come with text that is maybe 8 point font, similar to the fine print on labels. That is way too small, even with reading glasses! The font in this version is about a 11 point font and much easier to read. The text is roughly the same size as a story in a newspaper. The cover is some type of vinyl, more brown than burgundy, floppy, but nonetheless appealing. The pages are thin but they have to be. If the publisher used any thicker paper, the bible would be huge. It was a good idea making the (good) book wider to accommodate the larger font. I am 50 and wear 1.75 strength reading glasses. This is great for me. I wouldn't recommend it for a senior citizen with poor eyesight. The font is not as big as large print edition books you get from the library.
High quality for the price, clear typeface/font, easy to read for older eyes. A bit heavy for weak hands or arms, but you can rest it on a table or on your lap and is just fine. I don't recommend highlighters except coloured pencils, because the ink/gel will bleed through the pages. If you have never used a square Bible it might take some getting use to. I love it. One of the top two most accurate English translations of the Bible. This is my go to Bible.
I love it. All the books in one place without costing an arm and a leg. Convenient size and easy to read with print that is not tiny. However, if this is large print I would hate to see what the regular print looks like. The thickness is about the size of a standard old and new testament bible so that gives a little reference there, since the Apocrypha is included.Overall, a good translation and well organized reference book.
I am glad I purchased this Bible! The print is easy to read, the lay out of the print and the set of the printing are great. The wording is so much easier for understanding and makes sense. I don't feel like I am reading prose from yester-year. My only complaint is that Jesus Christ's word are not in red ink. I am keeping the 5 star rating as this Bible does include the Aprocrypha. This Bible is so more enjoyable to read than my old King James Bible. What I am most impressed with is how easy it is to read.

**STARRED REVIEW** "Keeping the tone light and offering nods as he goes to historical figures . . . he focuses on technological advances that made space travel possible and on the awesome, sustained effort that brought President John F. Kennedy's "Big Idea" to fruition . . . A frank, often funny appreciation of our space program's high-water mark.” (Kirkus Reviews)**STARRED REVIEW** "Brown addresses information that’s sometimes omitted from children’s texts: only men were considered for the early astronaut programs, people and animals died in rocket tests and space flights, and Wernher von Braun forced concentration camp prisoners to build rockets for the Nazis before he surrendered to the Americans . . . A must for youth graphic collections." (School Library Journal)**STARRED REVIEW** "Brown uses his characteristic watercolors and mix of explanation and primary source quotes to balance art and science . . . The illustrations keep pace with the story and maintain the reader’s interest throughout." (School Library Connection)"A broad yet eye-opening tribute to the astronauts' achievements . . . The Big Ideas That Changed the World series is off to a promising start with this illuminating, cogent volume." (Booklist)"Engaging . . . [Brown] peppers the oft-told tale with details that don’t always make it to the textbooks." (The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)

This is my first Brown Book, but it will not be my last! Rocket to the moon! takes us back in time to when we, of course, landed on the moon, but in such a fresh and fun way! I was literally sharing interest facts with my husband as I read through this comic-like children’s book! Such as the shuttle held 950,000 gallons of fuel and used up 500,000 gallons of it within the first two and a half minutes! Wow! That is awesome!. The illustrations were wonderful and I loved everything about the book! I am impressed!

Tynan Sylvester is a massively under-appreciated contributor to the art and science of game development and design. Within the first day of reading this book, my buddy and I had major breakthroughs with our game that had been trapped by bad design. We kept looking for what experience we were going for, what story we should tell, or what mechanic we needed to add, without fully appreciating how those are all connected. The first half of this book has completely and permanently changed how I approach game design--for the better. The second half taught me about how to actually manage and design the production of your game. All throughout, his clear and concise writing draws connections between the game-related topics and life in general, making for a remarkably interesting and meaningful read. Maybe I just found this book at the right time, but I can honestly say that this book has been life-changing for me. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in improving their ability to make great games. Hopefully future editions will elaborate on how his conclusions have guided the design and production of his game, Rimworld.
This book is amazing. I already want to re-read it. It doesn’t only talk about surface level “how†of game design or crafting, but also the “why†as the philosophy and psychology behind games. I feel like it’s going to be my game design bible for years to come. This book puts into words and solidifies a lot of concepts I’ve been sorta noticing but couldn’t quite put my finger on. For example, the discussion about how people play games not only because they’re “fun,†but because they trigger all sorts of emotions. I wouldn’t describe the all-too-realistic fear of sharks and drowning that Subnautica triggers in me as fun, yet I keep wanting to play it.There’s also a great discussion about elegance of design, which makes me feel like game reviews saying something like “easy to learn, hard to master†are the best praise a dev can get. Finally, the discussions of flow, skill floors/ceilings, and philosophy of balance are the epitome of things I’ve felt with my intuition but haven’t understood really cerebrally. So anyways, great book, if you’re considering buying it, I highly recommend going for it. Well worth full price.
I only have one complaint about this book...it ended. I wanted the author, Tynan Sylvester to go on for at least another 200 pages. Hopefully, one day, he'll write one just talking about all the true and weird stuff that goes on in the games industry. This book is heads and tails above any "classic" game design book or manual. It's the opposite of some of those ivory tower tomes written by those that don't "do" but "teach". It's not a step-by-step manual about how to do good game design. It begins assuming you already have read the many books on those subjects. This is a book about game design in the real world. Instead of a chapter on brainstorming techniques like some books on game design would have you slog through, "Designing Games" says this about brainstorming: (in a chapter called "Knowledge Creation") - After defining brainstorming as a semi-formal process designed to quickly produce a large number of ideas, he says - "Brainstorming is good for generating ideas in volume. It is very bad for refining ideas, and the ideas it produces vary widely in quality."Exactly 6 sentences are devoted to brainstorming. You may not agree and think that brainstorming requires much more discussion, but I loved that choice. The highest compliment that I can give to this book is that it coherently explains exactly why I don't want to work in an organization that creates games and prefer to create/design games on my own. It is exceptionally difficult to Create/Design games within any organization, but Tynan breaks it down every step of the way and gives many, many pointers of how to navigate the potential minefield of getting a "good" game done in a corporate environment. He makes the point more than once that the smaller teams are more likely to make great games. (and that's why I'm still a team of one, even though I wouldn't call my Clutter games "great" by any measure).Basically, it felt like I was talking to an old colleague, who has been in the trenches with me at the various game companies I've worked for. The only difference is that Tynan has way bigger and better experiences than I have.He even covers topics like Motivation, and how it can be affected by success. The last third of the book is the best as it delves more into the "process" of creating a game as opposed to the "craft" part. He talks about what a developer has to do day in and day out to get a game done. He starts by telling us what "busy idiocy" is (basically solving the wrong problems that aren't the real problems and the fake satisfaction of completing unimportant tasks (my words)) and then he sums it up nicely:"In the short term, busy idiocy feels like raging genius."And that's the best compliment I can leave Tynan with. He's a true genius in a sea of raging ones. He can spot "poop and scoop" (buy the book/look it up) a mile away."Designing Games" is wisdom you won't find anywhere else...and if you've been in the trenches of even a small game development team trying to get out "good" product, this book is for you. It's your story and it will make you think about how you make your many choices in both Game Design, and just Game Creation a bit differently. Thanks Tynan, I want that sequel.
Written in a clear concise manner and chock full of valuable information. Writer shows his knowledge in the industry as well as giving you many techniques still in use today. I've applied it to my own programming and designing skills and have improved my games in leaps and bounds.
Very good, especially the section on "elegant" game mechanics. For me, that section alone was worth the price of the book, because it provides several good rules of thumb on what makes a good game mechanic and what doesn't. Whenever I have to make a design choice, I feel I can fall back on these rules and make a better decision.
I have bought this book for my husband and he likes it a lot. I took a peek as well - it is wonderfully written and would be interesting wven for a newbie.
An insightful guide to designing the player's overall gameplay experience, which is a welcome change from books that discuss lower-level elements such as individual gameplay mechanics.
Great resource to learn the theory behind designing games.Elegant design is hard to describe but this book does a pretty good job of it.

My Stand Mixer Ice Cream Maker Attachment Cookbook by Lily CharlesThis book deceived me because I thought I could just use my stand mixer to make ice cream. You really need a lot of other ice cream attachments.Starts with a table of contents, an intro, how to use a freezing appliance, and a bit about ice cream. Each recipe starts with a title, summary of the dish and list of ingredients.Instructions are included and there are no servings, no pictures and NO nutritiona information.Love combination of flavors you can create.
This has a lot of interesting gourmet ice cream recipes. I am a pretty simple kind of girl. I really wasn't looking for gourmet ice cream recipes, so for me it was a little disappointing. But if you like those sorts of things this definitely your type of book! I gave it 3 stars because it didn't meet my needs, but that doesn't mean it won't meet the fancy cooks needs ha! You will probably love it!
This book is really great and my wife really loves it too! I guess that's what really matters lol. We really like the cookie dough ice cream recipe too.I recommend purchasing it because it's great to have all these delicious recipes on demand :)
Received this book today! Is excellent but mostly all the same recipes I have were identical in my Complete Cuisinart Ice Cream Book. Multiple identical recipes except this book is adapted to the Kitchenaid mixer. How did I get so fooled??? The authors of both books are different names, so expected different recipes; assuming each book was different. Was I wrong! They are written by same person. The inside sheets are identical in looks, typo, etc. So either buy one book OR other, not both. One of the books are worthwhile, but you don't need both.
I like Ice cream nice book easy recipes
Lots of lovely recipes for ice cream for stand up mixer
The Ice Cream Maker attachment to the Kitchen Aid Mixer and Cookbook was a Bridal Registry gift. I was pleased with the items. I thought the shipment price was ridiculous!!
Got a kitchen aid ice cream maker and had to have this. It's a good start

This is a famous book, but “Bowling Alone†was not what I expected. What I expected was social commentary. What I got was social science, proving with reams of statistics what is now a commonplace, that social capital in America has eroded massively over the past several decades. Of course, that it’s a commonplace is due largely to this book, published in 2000 as a follow-up to a 1995 article, so that’s hardly a criticism of the book. But, paradoxically, it’s not clear that most readers nowadays will get much value, by itself, out of reading this very valuable book. That’s not to say readers can’t get much value out of this book. But to do so today, you have to evaluate the data it provides with frameworks it doesn’t provide. I found that reading this book while keeping in mind some of the insights provided by Yuval Levin’s recent “A Fractured Republic†helped me better understand the causes of the decline in social capital. In particular, Levin notes that after World War II, Americans have become increasingly individualistic, in a rebound effect from prior consolidation, which helps explain the trends Putnam documents.Putnam begins by convincingly demonstrating that the same pattern of erosion of social capital has occurred in nearly every area of American life. That pattern is, basically, an increase in participation (and resultant social capital) at the beginning of the 20th Century; an even greater increase in participation after World War II; and a precipitous fall-off from roughly 1970 through the 1990s. He demonstrates that this is true of all forms of political participation, civic participation, religious participation, workplace interactions, informal social connections, volunteering and philanthropy, and mutual trust. After proving this erosion to his, and the reader’s, satisfaction, Putnam tries to figure out why this has happened. He carefully parses various possibilities, from increased pressures for time and money, women entering the work force, suburbanization, TV and the Internet, generational change and others. He concludes there is no single culprit and each of these has some responsibility, although TV is the largest driver. Putnam considers only materialist drivers and does not consider philosophical shifts in American thought, probably because those would be difficult to capture in social science surveys (although it seems to me it could be done, by asking about opinions, rather than activities, while keeping in mind that such self-reporting is subject to all sorts of biases and inaccuracies).Putnam does an excellent job of sub-analyzing the data he presents. For example, he is careful to distinguish trends across generations from those occurring within generations (generally, intra-generational trends are swamped by inter-generational trends—in other words, it’s the younger generations in which social capital is actually eroding). He is also careful to note where the data is uncertain, and to avoid sweeping conclusions. And he makes interesting distinctions that are relevant to his arguments, such as between bridging social capital, that creates new connections among disparate people, and bonding social capital, that creates tighter social connections among people with something in common. Finally, Putnam optimistically lays out a program for restoring social capital, analogizing the current age to the late 19th Century Gilded Age and, among other things, citing Booth Tarkington’s laments about the decline of social capital in the early 20th Century as evidence, given the increase in social capital later in the 20th Century, that the pattern can be reversed. Putnam’s specific suggestions are not very detailed—they are couched as, for example, “Let us find ways to ensure that by 2010 significantly more Americans will participate in (not merely consume or ‘appreciate’) cultural activities from group dancing to songfests to community theater to rap festivals.†How this is to be done Putnam does not really say, other than to claim that “top-down versus bottom-up†is a false dichotomy—“the roles of national and local institutions in restoring American community need to be complementary.â€But the problem here is that top-down actions have been a major cause of the problem of eroding social capital, and one that Putnam mostly ignores, since he assigns causal value exclusively to bottom-up causes. Long before Putnam, commentators noted that the growth of the Leviathan state was crowding out intermediary institutions of the type whose decline Putnam decries. In 1953, Robert Nisbet pointed this out, though he did it qualitatively, not with Putnam’s quantitative approach. Nisbet noted that as Leviathan grows, as it did from Progressive times on but most of all starting in the 1960s, intermediary institutions decay, since people seek meaning, and when they cannot obtain meaning on the local level, they will turn to national meaning, thus strengthening the central state (while obtaining only counterfeit meaning).Similarly, this year (2016), Yuval Levin (who extensively cites Putnam) noted that “As the national government grows more centralized, and takes over the work otherwise performed by mediating institutions—from families and communities to local governments and charities—individuals become increasingly atomized; and as individuals grow apart from one another, the need for centralized government provision seems to grow.†Moreover, “In liberating many individuals from oppressive social constraints, we have also estranged many from their families and unmoored them from their communities, work and faith. In accepting a profusion of options in every part of our lives to meet our particular needs and wants, we have also unraveled the institutions of an earlier era, and with it the public’s broader faith in institutions of all kinds.†Levin points both to the expansion of government and to a widespread acceptance of “expressive individualism†as causes for the erosion in social capital. These are the type of framework insights Putnam does not provide, and they suggest that government may be the problem, or a large part of it. That’s not to say that the national government is unable to help with the decline in social capital, but it is to say that its nature is not best suited to that role, and recognizing its culpability in the erosion of social capital is necessary to properly analyze the problem. Similarly, it’s important to recognize philosophical shifts in Americans themselves. In fact, at no point does Putnam assign blame to government action as a possible base cause for the national decline in social capital (although government actions, such as splitting Indianapolis with an interstate, do occasionally figure in anecdotes). The huge increase in government scope and power that began in the 1960s is exactly coterminous with the drop in social capital that Putnam documents. That, by itself, proves nothing. But it’s at least a coincidence that is worth addressing, and Putnam doesn’t. Government, in fact, figures nearly not at all in Putnam’s book, other than indirectly, with respect to individuals’ reduced civic engagement in the political process. In my mind, this blind spot is the biggest defect of Putnam’s book. That said, I am less convinced by a related frequent criticism of Putnam’s argument—that he ignores modern reasons why Americans might choose to be less politically involved, such as the perception both on the Left and the Right that the system is “rigged.†The supporters of Bernie Sanders point to the political power of the rich and connected; conservatives point to the federal government’s, and particularly the Supreme Court’s, seizing of power that used to be devolved to the local level, where individuals could have an impact. But if you think about it for a little while, those things may be true, and they may affect civic engagement in politics, but they say little about areas of social capital other than political involvement, such as religious involvement and workplace interaction. Therefore, this seems like a weak criticism, although attractive to those who view the world solely or largely through a political lens.Putnam has written books since this one, including a recent one on income immobility which seems like it might be very interesting. I’m curious if there is data from the past fifteen years on the trends that Putnam addresses. While “Bowling Alone†does have a website, most of the links in it don’t work, which is too bad. If he hasn’t already, it’d be great if Putnam updated some of his data from this book, and let us know if his analysis and conclusions have changed. For example, Putnam notes that non-privatized (i.e., public) religious belief is the single largest driver of social capital. How has the modern tendency away from religious belief, accelerating since 2000, affected social capital? And, of course, this book was written before the rise of social media (although Putnam does discuss Internet social activity in some detail, as it existed when the book was written, including its impact on reducing constraints of simultaneous timing on communication, and the “poverty of social cues†in Internet communication). How has the utter dominance of Facebook and similar media affected social capital? These, and many similar questions, would be worth answering. So, while Putnam’s conclusions have, I think, been very valuable for society, I’m not sure that actually reading this book is necessary or valuable for most people. But if you are very interested in the topic, and read this in conjunction with other works, it may well be worth your time, even today.
Putnam’s study will tell you more than you may wish to know about how Americans spend their time in an effort to answer the question of where has the civic soul gone. As he notes: “Community has warred incessantly with individualism for preeminence in our political hagiology…. The dominant theme is simple: For the first two-thirds of the twentieth century a powerful tide bore Americans into ever deeper engagement in the life of their communities, but a few decades ago— silently, without warning— that tide reversed and we were overtaken by a treacherous rip current. Without at first noticing, we have been pulled apart from one another and from our communities over the last third of the century.†(p.27)Bowling Along describes this shift and makes efforts to offer the reasons why, one of the heaviest being the arrival and dispersion of Television. He states: “I need to make clear at the outset that I have not entirely solved the mystery, so I invite your help in sifting clues.â€Putnam does not delve into the politics of the era only that the citizen has become detached from the sense of participation. This review offers another explanation, following the wisdom and publications of Sheldon S. Wolin a political philosopher who describes the same process in a very different manner. Part of the change is in style of presentation. Putnam’s approach is under the sway of the behavioralist revolution, which emphasized the quantitative analysis of data rather than political ideas as a way to explain political behavior, in his case “SOCIAL CAPITALâ€.Wolin sees the same shifting from communal involvement to individualism and a following drop in the role of active government beginning in the 1970’s, but this was an engineered change with its roots in the formation of a small group, the Mont Pelerin Society (named after the Swiss spa where they first met) in 1947, with Friedrich von Hayek, Ludvig von Mises, and the economist Milton Friedman as recognized contributors. They felt the world was headed toward a centralized highly managed regulated existence threading Freedom and Individual Rights as they saw it.In America this was the Post-Depression, Post-War, FDR creation with Keynesian anti-cyclical intervention, anti-trust and social overhead dimensions, characterized today as our period of ‘Welfare Liberalism,’ all features they hoped to destroy. (Putnam handles this period as one of extensive interpersonal relationships.)Those believes had been sold by individuals like Lewis F. Powell Jr. who in 1971 issued a call to the US Chamber of Commerce, and other conservative organizations and think-tanks such asThe Business Roundtable, The Heritage Foundation, The Cato Institution, Accuracy in Academia and the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research to counter criticism of the free enterprise system. At the University of Chicago Milton Freedom was spreading the word. Powell was to be appointed to the Supreme Court by President Nixon. A formidable array of power and influence.David Harvey in A Brief History of Neoliberalism details their impacts and views it as ‘Class Action’ a dangerous tack for an academic but now in 2018 when “1%ters†has entered the common vocabulary likely raises few eyebrows. It is a long shot from Reagan’s ‘Government is not the solution but the problem’ to the neoliberal existence prevalent today, the point is just that Putnam’s Bowling Alone concerns may have very different causes and therefore very different solutions. The book is very complete but tedious and Wolin’s thesis of “Democracy Incorporated†definitely seems more relevant. Sheldon S. Wolin was professor Political Science Berkeley and Princeton, Robert D. Putnam was Dena of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.Perhaps the Millianians generation can put us back together someday, that would please both.3 star
Bowling Alone has risen to the status of "classic" in rather few years to attain that distinction. Putnam saw -- and understood -- things happening in American culture that, when he wrote it, no one else seemed to have focused on. Sure, people would write articles in the popular press about how lodges were going under for lack of members, and community activities seemed to have become a thing of the past, but no one had pulled it together into a comprehensive -- and very readable -- analysis and, as far as I can tell, absolutely nailed it.I see this book cited continually in articles and books in a wide variety of fields that attempt to understand contemporary America. As I watch the Trump phenomenon unfolding, I am wondering when someone will astutely draw the connection between the phenomena Putnam analyzes and the current political scene. It's a classic, and you need to read it if you have not.

I have not thought about Baba Yaga in years! Lucky Ms Novik grew up with family who told her these stories but poor little me, I had to search them out in "Highlights for Children" in the dentist offices of my childhood. Ms Novik's Agnieszka is not Baba Yaga but the witch Jaga lived in the forest near Agnieszka's house."Uprooted" is a great book and it is a self-contained book. Ms Novik has gone against the tide and put a whole fantasy novel in one book! Hooray. There is room for more stories about these characters, if she feels like writing, but with "Uprooted" you don't have to wade through (or pay for) 3 paper doorstops."Uprooted" is great, too, because all of the women - all of the peasant women, and the royal women, and the kids - are strong and equal. Not all of them are people you want to spend time with, but every woman acts on her own desires and acts unselfconsciously, not like the "look at me" girls in movies and most books.I am, as of this writing, the only person who has downgraded the cover on the NetGalley site. The reason I did that is because the cover is too generic, too much like other covers. And the cover is too innocent, too sweet, and it might trick someone into buying the book for a kid. There is only one sex scene in the book, but it is a well-written, sensuous, very adult sex scene (whew!) that blasts the book waaay out of the "appropriate for all ages" category. Yet the cover radiates teen appeal.I received a review copy of "Uprooted" by Naomi Novik (Random House - Del Rey Spectra) through NetGalley.com.
Magical tale based in large part on Polish fairy tales about Baba Yaga and her hut on chicken foot, about Poland and Russia and their never ending-conflicts about. Agnieszka (polish name) is a young girl with no skills other then being a total, grimy and clumsy mess. When it is discovered she has magic of her own it is as undisciplined and chaotic as the girl herself, however it is quite potent. When mixed with her masters magic it produces miraculous results. At the heart of the story is loyalty, friendships, love, greed, power and vengeance. Not everyone escapes unscathed but those who do have to find their own way to happiness. I loved it and found it breathtakingly beautiful.
Having been a fan of Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series for many years, I have often wondered what she would do if she ever decided to write something else. After all, this is a woman who studied English Literature at Brown University, holds a degree in Computer Science from Columbia, and wasn’t afraid to show her geeky side as a game designer on Neverwinter Nights. That’s a pretty awesome combination in my book and when she chose to write the Temeraire series, a fantasy/historical mashup combining the concept of intelligent dragons working as a sort of Air Force with wartime forces in the Napoleonic era, well…I was hooked. So now comes this new novel and my bottom line verdict is that it is fantastic. It’s straight fantasy but absolutely reminds one of that nostalgic feeling of fairy tales you read (or were read to you) from childhood. After reading the opening two chapters I thought I was on my way into just such a fairy tale, but it wasn’t long before any ideas I had about predicting where this was going were thrown out of the proverbial window. The plot begins as a twist in the age-old concept of a young maiden being picked every ten years by the village elders to sacrifice to the dragon in order to buy its protection. The twist is that this time it’s not an actual dragon but a renowned wizard who requires the sacrifice. And he doesn’t select the pretty young maiden that everybody was planning on but instead chooses Agneieszka, our protagonist, and it is though her eyes that we see the story unfold.OK…interesting twist but I still thought I knew where the plot was going. I was wrong. No spoilers from me but suffice it to say that this novel kept me turning the pages way past my bedtime. Ms. Novik is a masterful storyteller and knows how to pace a book to keep the reader hooked all the way through. Her use of language is perfect for this type of tale, combining the lighter fairy tale elements but also taking a deep dive into battle scenes with a hard grittiness that, frankly, surprised me. And the world building…this is how it should be done. It’s obviously fully developed but we aren’t bombarded with extraneous details that we don’t need. We can understand everything and how all the characters fit together but don’t spend much time with info dumps.I understand this book is being marketed as YA although I confess to not really understanding the distinction anymore. The only thing remotely YA about this is the fact that Agneieszka is seventeen years old at the beginning of the story. Rest assured there is no “dumbing down†of the plot, the rich characterization, or the language/word choice. True, there is no swearing to speak of but there is violence aplenty. Lots of fighting action and violent deaths, plenty of creative use of well-imagined magic, and a tasteful but on-stage sex scene all combine to make this one a keeper. And the plot about the woods…the intelligent life force of the dark woods and how it consumes people…oh yeah…no spoilers. You’ll have to read that yourself. This book is complete in and of itself. I could see how there may be a sequel or two (or seven) but there may never be more.Well done Ms. Novik. Highly recommended!
I really enjoyed getting lost in this book. It draws you in to The Wood. I reached the end and felt a bit confused, I had to blink and look around and realize I was no longer in The Wood, but sitting in my living room...I could really relate to the main character. I understood the way she felt, her frustration and the way she coped and succeeded. Doing things her way, the way that was comfortable, not the "correct, spelled out way". It took me back to my old Polish neighbors that I would visit as a child. The comfortable life, herbs hanging from the rafters, hot sweet tea..I wish there was another one to read...
I loved "Uprooted!" This really is a book that has everything. Agnieszka is such a charming, likeable main character. She loves her family, her friends, and her life - all before the Dragon chooses her to serve him. The interactions between these two are often hilarious. He's a total brat - grumpy, rough around the edges, argumentative. And Agnieszka is his stubborn, sassy counterpart. The descriptions of magic in this are one of the best parts. And the plot!! You'll be on the edge of your seat for most of the book. The most beautiful aspect, to me, is how deeply she and Kasia love each other. Realistic female friendships are hard to come across in literature, but it never felt as if their love was put on the back burner for anything else. A wonderful, imaginative read.

About the Author
Aristotle was born in 384 B.C. in the town of Stagira in Macedonia (now called Stavros). At the age of 17 he entered Plato's Academy in Athens, where he remained until Plato's death nineteen years later. During this time he first thoroughly absorbed the ideas of Plato and then began to move apart on his own philosophical path. On the death of Plato Aristotle spent some time away from Athens including a period when he acted as tutor to prince Alexander, later to be Alexander the Great, returning to Athens at about 50 years in age to begin his most fruitful period as a philosopher. Close to Athens, Aristotle founded his own school, the Lyceum, and began the first of the great libraries. Here Aristotle remained until the death of Alexander in 323 B.C. after which a rise in anti-Macedonian feeling obliged him to leave. He died in 322 B.C. The surviving works of Aristotle date from this last period at the Lyceum, and were the academic textbooks of the time. Substantial, original, and broadly scoped, they were to dominate the intellectual history of Western Europe for over a thousand years, and remain of the greatest importance to this day.

Aristotle's writing has never been called pretty by anyone (except Cicero), but these translations are, in my opinion, particularly atrocious. As another review commented, it feels as though it was directly translated from Greek to English with little regard for the conventions of the English language. "Besides these there is the judgement that that which is good is not good, parallel with the judgement that that that is not good is good." Why did the translator feel compelled to ludicrously pen the phrase "that that that is not good is good"? There are many viable alternatives that are far more clear without significantly altering the meaning, for example "...the judgement according to which the not-good is good." Instead, the translators (I'm looking at you, Miss Edghill) systematically choose the most twisted way of saying phrase after phrase. This confusing translation does not aid scholars--you can make a translation true to the original by simply adding linguistic notes in especially difficult areas that really need them to preserve the author's intent. The formatting of this edition, which the editor in the preface calls a "bare-bones English language edition... prepared for my own use..." does not do anything to temper the complaints about the translation, as it contains no notes of any kind. All of this in spite of the fact that Aristotle wrote in the form of teaching aids, not self-study manuals. To top it all off, as if the frustrating translations and total lack of notes were not sufficiently annoying, there are constant little grammatical errors littered all throughout the book. The editor says that he first got the text in 1996 from the MIT classics archive and printed it. In the subsequent 20+ years that have elapsed since that time, it doesn't seem that the editor ever got around to, you know, editing the edition. "...if it is not white, the man who states that it is making [sic] a false statement." It should read "the man who states that it is is making..." My favorite is on page 65. "Evidently then, whenever the premisses are similar in form, and one is universal, the other particular, a syllogism can, not [sic] be formed anyhow."I can, not, understand how it is that that that is so poorly translated and edited could be published and taken seriously. Go buy a copy translated, edited, and published by professionals. Both Aristotle and you deserve better.
This is a terrific collection that otherwise never seemed to come together in an affordable, single volume edition. Since it is Aristotle, the value of the contents is a given. As such, anyone interested in having these texts could do little better than to have this fine volume. If I were to make any suggestion, if Porphyry's traditional Introduction to the Categories was included herein, that would make for quite the complete package.
"Logic, therefore, as the science thought, or the science of the process of pure reason, should be capable of being constructed a priori."-Arthur Schopenhauer, The Art of Controversy("a priori" is defined as deduced from self-evident premises)Have you ever wondered why formal logic isn't taught in state controlled public schools? Ever wondered why the vast majority of the public seem to have no understanding of how to use formal logic to properly evaluate arguments in order to determine if they are sound or cogent? Why would the government of a supposedly free society suppress such a seemingly vital science? Isn't it important for the electorate to understand when they are being deceived with fallacious reasoning?Read The Organon by Aristotle, compare it to the ideas of other great logicians, learn the a priori laws of formal logic, and begin to see the truth that has been hidden from us for many generations.Like all important secrets, formal logic has its gatekeepers. These are the academics/authors that suppress and subvert vital concepts about formal logic. They would like to see the masses suspended in lies and ignorance forever. Here are a few ideas from Aristotle and some others that I hope you will find helpful:"All instruction given or received by way of argument proceeds from pre-existent knowledge."-Aristotle, Posterior Analytics"We ought in fairness to fight our case with no help beyond the bare facts: nothing, therefore, should matter except the proof of those facts."-Aristotle, Rhetoric"The truth or falsity of a statement depends on facts, not on any power on the part of the statement itself of admitting contrary qualities". - Aristotle, Categories"Similarly with any other art or science. Consequently, if the attributes of the thing are apprehended, our business will then be to exhibit readily the demonstration. For if none of the true attributes of things had been omitted in the historical survey, we should be able to discover the proof and demonstrate everything which admitted of proof, and to make that clear , whose nature does not admit of proof".- Aristotle, Prior Analytics"We suppose ourselves to posses unqualified scientific knowledge of a thing, as opposed to knowing it in the accidental way in which the sophist knows, when we think that we know the cause on which the fact depends, as the cause of that fact and of no other, and further, that the fact could not be other than it is". - Aristotle, Posterior Analytics"Ignorance is preferable to error; and he is less remote from truth who believes nothing, than he who believes what is wrong."-Thomas Jefferson"Fallacious reasoning is just the opposite of what can be called cogent reasoning. We reason cogently when we reason (1) validly; (2) from premises well supported by evidence; and (3) using all relevant evidence we know of. The purpose of avoiding fallacious reasoning is, of course, to increase our chances of reasoning cogently."-Howard Kahane, Logic and Contemporary Rhetoric, 1976, second edition"Aristotle devides all conclusions into logical and dialectical, in the manner described, and then into eristical. (3) Eristic is the method by which the form of the conclusion is correct, but the premises, the material from which it is drawn, are not true, but only appear to be true. Finally (4) sophistic is the method in which the form of the conclusion is false, although it seems correct. These three last properly belong to the art of Controversial Dialectic, as they have no objective truth in view, but only the appearance of it, and pay no regard to truth itself; that is to say, they aim at victory."-Arthur Schopenhauer, The Art of Controversy"The fallacy of suppressed evidence is committed when an arguer ignores evidence that would tend to undermine the premises of an otherwise good argument, causing it to be unsound or uncogent. Suppressed evidence is a fallacy of presumption and is closely related to begging the question. As such, it's occurrence does not affect the relationship between premises and conclusion but rather the alleged truth of premises. The fallacy consists in passing off what are at best half-truths as if they were whole truths, thus making what is actually a defective argument appear to be good. The fallacy is especially common among arguers who have a vested interest in the situation to which the argument pertains."-Patrick Hurley, A Concise Introduction to Logic (1985)"The province of Logic must be restricted to that portion of our knowledge which consists of inferences from truths previously known; whether those antecedent data be general propositions, or particular observations and perceptions. Logic is not the science of Belief, but the science of Proof, or Evidence. In so far as belief professes to be founded on proof, the office of Logic is to supply a test for ascertaining whether or not the belief is well grounded."- John Stuart Mill, A System of Logic"From the proletarians nothing is to be feared. Left to themselves, they will continue from generation to generation and from century to century, working, breeding, and dying, not only without any impulse to rebel, but without the power of grasping that the world could be other than it is. They could only be dangerous if the advance of industrial technique made it necessary to educate them more highly; but, since military and commercial rivalry are no longer important, the level of popular education is actually declining. What opinions the masses hold, or do not hold, is looked upon as a matter of indifference. They can be granted intellectual liberty because they have no intellect."-George Orwell, 1984
"Categores," "On Interpretation," "Prior Analytics," "Posterior Analytics," "Topics," and "Sophistical Refutations" make up Aristotle's "organon" (-a tool, and in this case, a tool for thinking well on any subject.) Roger Bishop Jones put this edition together when he couldn't find an available one to suit his purpose. Each section of each work has a handy heading but there is no commentary and no glossary but a fine index. It's a solid student edition.
Great book, but not an easy read (it is Aristotle after all). Would have been helpful if a glossary was included for some of the more obsolete terms, but well worth the money.
The book arrived in good condition

I got it right on!!! Good servisse and quality. I certanly recommend it.Very deep into Greek culture, great introduction on classical logic.
