This is one of the best books produced in 2016. Matti Friedman writes about Israel, the Middle East, and the political and personal implications of war from a unique perspective. Born in Canada and an immigrant to Israel as a teenager, Friedman shares his skepticism towards Israel's military involvement in Lebanon. As a former combat soldier in the Israel/Lebanon conflict that occurred in the 90s and current reservist, Friedman honestly and poignantly paints a picture of a country whose attitude towards war and the military spans from the anti-war mothers of the kibbutzim, to the apolitical teenage soldiers who are performing their compulsory duties as members of a diverse set of troops, to right-wingers who justify war with keeping the country safe from terrorists. It is indeed a complicated country - and while all characters, including the author, share different views of militarism and war, all agree on one common goal: the survival of the world's only Jewish state.As Western consumers of news (whom Friedman is clearly addressing as his audience in this book), we are constantly inundated with images of the Middle East and Israel. Generally, progressive news outlets tend to view Israel's military operations unfavorably - that is, Israel's military tactics are generally criticized, and consumers of the news are not really getting the full picture of the Middle East in general, or Israel's relationship to it. Friedman also has a journalistic background and has covered Israel while working for the Associated Press. These experiences, while not mentioned explicitly in the book, I believe served as motivating factors for the subject matter of this text.The most powerful portion of this text (to me) was the last, when Friedman recounts a visit he took to Lebanon, where he was stationed whilst a soldier in the IDF. As an Israeli/Canadian dual citizen, he could only enter into Lebanon as a Canadian, and had to hide throughout his visit 1) his Jewish identity; 2) his Israeli citizenship; and 3) his service to the IDF. The most powerful part is when he was on his way to the Pumpkin (the outpost where he was stationed in the 90s) in southern Lebanon, and remarks that he "had traveled 12,000 miles (from Toronto) to arrive 20 miles from" where his family's home was located in northern Israel. This gives you a real sense of how serious (and sad) the divide of a border can truly be, especially in a place as volatile as the Middle East.
A good story about the coming of age / rite of passage experience that all young Israeli's go through when they serve in the military. In this instance it was against the backdrop of serving in the buffer zone of southern Lebanon in the mid-nineties. The buffer was supposed to prevent terrorists from infiltrating into northern Israel but the isolated strongpoints ended up being targets for Hezballah attacks. Many Israeli military casualties were incurred which led to protests in Israel and ultimately withdrawal from Lebanon. Years later the author visits Lebanon and hears the Hezballah account of the conflict. The Israeli withdrawal was considered a victory by Hezballah.This is a good account of citizen soldiers serving in direct defense of their country.
Pumpkinflowers. A book about Israel v. Lebanon. I don't know how I stumbled across this book but I'm grateful that I did. I almost didn't read it. I'm not enamored of soldier stories and when he explained his layout of topics, I thought, "Nope. This is not something that will interest me at all." But then despite that thought I began to read. Short chapters, many about 5 pages. Easy segments. By the end of the first chapter I knew I had found something special. Something to really delve into. A story of soldiers as people, people integrated into two societies -- the military and real life. If they survive. Moving. Humanizing. Contemplative. Brilliant. I highly recommend it. Pumpkin is where they were stationed. Flower was their slang for the dead. Read it. Moving.
A well written account of a forgotten war where young Israelis were wounded and died protecting the North of Israel in the buffer Zone between Lebanon and Israel in the nineties. At an out post called the Pumpkin Friedman describes the events over these years in simple but powerful language.Battling Hezbollah militants in a time when the 'suicide bomber' was yet to make a mark, the boys on the Pumpkin obeyed orders and wished for the normal life of a teenager. This story is a tribute to those boys, some of whom never returned to their families and a look at the political climate of Israel and the Middle East at the time.Israel is a country forever struggling to maintain their sovereign right to the land surrounded by hostile countries who would like to annihilate them.I can't imagine how it would be to live with the constant threat of rockets being fired over the border into the country and almost daily attacks on the population by suicide bombers and the like.I'm sure everyone would like to see peace in the area but that seems like a pipe dream with the ever growing threats and hostilities.
A soldiers story and one from a sensitive one.As Friedman writes, nothing may be as it seems, especially as it may have been reported by an ignorant , willfully so or not , press. It is not as much a story as a memoir but because it strips away any pretension , or false bravado ,from the author's ( and I suspect by extension others' ) combat experience while recognizing both his and their fears and bravery it is well worth reading. Interestingly, Friedman visits "undercover" and after his military service that area of Lebanon under Hezbollah control in which he had been in combat. That further provides Friedman and therefore the reader with a personal perspective of war that other books seldom do.
To understand where we are it is necessary to understand where we have been. In beautiful prose and a compelling narrative Pumpkinflowers leads you back in time to a forgotten past that gave birth to the present. A people. A nation. A war that has spread far and wide from a small forgotten hill in south Lebanon. We owe a debt of gratitude to the author who has gifted us with this memory. I feel it's weight. To remember. I wish I would have had this book 40 years ago as I began my journey in leading within the local church. I am not sure it would have changed many of my experiences, but I would have had a map to better understand where I was, what I need to do to keep moving and ultimately where I was headed. This book succinctly and (I believe) accurately describes God's heart and intent for leaders functioning in His Church. We must continue to encourage apostolic leaders of sodalic organizations to respond to their call and use their gifts through sodalic structures.The Church can no longer be seen as just a local body of believers (Modality); the Church must also be seen as comprised of catalytic movements lead by apostolic leaders (Sodalities). As Sam so well points out, these two type of organizations, like two legs of a pair of pants are necessary for the health and vibrancy of the Church. Don't just read it, but live it, for the Kingdom of God depends on these truths.
This book gave me a lot to think about regarding how to define the Church and how to view apostolic gifting and ministry. Some books take a lot of effort to read; others draw me in. This one drew me in.
I have enjoyed reading through this book. It brought new insights to Ralph Winter's concepts of "sodality" and "modality." The book shows how both dimensions of the Church are essential dimensions of the whole Church.

This is the second cover like this that I've bought. I liked the first one so much, but wanted a different color. This one is equally as good (perfect size, handy outside pockets, handy inside pocket for pen & highlighter, handy 'handles'). HOWEVER, on this one, the scripture quote on outside is PRINTED AT AN ANGLE. It's not a big problem, but a little jarring to this 'perfectionist'. :) (see photo)
As far as functionality is concerned, I have no complaint. My hardcover ESV Bible (several years old) fits and everything, and I like how there's a pocket on each side of the protector. I'm also quite pleased with the "purse" aspect; that was a major selling point for me, having the handles place where they are.I took a star off because the day it arrived, just some hours later, I noticed the lettering on the verse had started to rub off. It's been about a month now--and understand, I'm not "picking at it" or anything--but more of it has come off. It doesn't bother me /that/ much, because the color scheme and the pattern on the brown part are more striking anyway, but for those of you might care, be forewarned.
This is a nice size and will fit my even my large JPS Tanach and any book I choose to take. I wanted it because I like to read my own stuff when going for doctor visits. And since I study a lot, it also has enough room for my sticky notes, highlighters and notepads.I also like that the zipper is right side up with the handles rather than upside down like some. I find that kind to be awkward and most likely that's just me!
Quality cover, handles reinforced, detail stitching on the outside is pretty and understated. I’m not flashy so this is modest aYet very pretty and sturdy. I use it over a big bible. Plenty of pockets as described. Would recommend it to anyone.

Really like my new Bible case. I choose the medium size and it fits my medium Bible and medium size notebook. Plus several pens. Good quality for a good price. Teal and brown go great together.
I love the case but I am concerned that one handle is not affixed as neatly as it should be. I wish they had checked the sewing prior. Maybe mine is just one that wasn't checked thoroughly by Quality Control. Despite that, it's a great case.

For example," you may be treating others with poor respect... think about times you may have done this, and think about how you could do it differently next time". I just felt that the level of information for someone really wanting to grow was weak as was the advice for continuing to deal with parents. "Become a stronger person, then you wont be impacted". Certainly true, but the book was not helpful in providing tools and techniques in how to accomplish this important goal. Personal growth is a BIG topic and requires great depth of understanding to overcome shame, self-absorption, and seek healthy mature responses to life when you currently do not understand your reactions or how to go about change. Anyone truly on this path would really need to seek other sources to help them with the "how to..."
Wayyyyyyy to many "exercises". Not the right book if you already know your parents are self-absorbed and just want to learn how to handle them. This is more of a discovery exercise. Wish the book would just get straight to the point instead of making you walk down memory lane.Because of the questionnaires in almost every chapter, this is also not the book during your commute to work.
This utterly fascinating book makes so much clear about how self-absorbed and narcissistic parents shape our lives and cause us no end of feelings of rejection and of never being able to meet parental expectations. The self-absorbed are NEVER wrong and NEVER take responsibility for the consequences of their actions, blaming everything on someone else. They lie without even thinking about it and create highly feasible alternate realities that they can convince others are actually true.Bottom line: you can never "win" against a narcissist.
This book. This book is GREAT.And, I like leaving it on my dashboard of my car. :)It allows a person to heal without becoming too focused on identifying the maladies the self-absorbed ones suffer from. So much time spent on them already.
Wish I discovered this book years ago! I bought this book a month before my wedding, and I'm so glad that I did! My single biggest issue with the wedding was planning around my controlling mother. This book laid out special occasions perfectly, and the evening was a success! The months leading up to the event, and the event itself could have gone terribly wrong, had I not read this book. If you live your life under the thumb of a parent who just won't leave you alone, this book is for you! I found a sense of peace and relief in this. I was even able to learn about my sister, as according to Ms. Brown's descriptions, as children of a controlling parent we each took a different path in life. This helped me understand all the family dynamics a little bit better, and how to be a better parent myself. Only time will tell with the next generation, hope I didn't mess that one up too much!
I actually found another book on the same topic to be much more helpful: "Trapped in the Mirror: Adult Children of Narcissists in their Struggle for Self," by Elan Golom. "Children of the Self-Absorbed" was a bit too clinical for me and I found the endless questionnaires to be cumbersome and unhelpful, and since much of the book depends on you doing each one and then applying your answers and what you've learned from them to the next situation, I finally gave up and stopped reading. I'd strongly recommend Golom's book if you want a more helpful treatment of the subject.
I have read a lot of literature out there about parents who have mental disorders, however, this book has been the most helpful resource that I have ever come across. It doesn't waste time trying to diagnose your parent with a mental disorder, but rather, it just tackles all of the traits of a self-absorbed parent by grouping them into different categories. It quickly becomes clear if this is or isn't your parent. For example, two of the categories provided a spot-on description of my parent and from there, which was my starting point. It offers real solutions for dealing with your parent as well as identifying and resolving some unpleasant traits in yourself. Not only has it helped me on the road to a less stressful and heartbreaking relationship with my parent, but it has led on a journey to becoming my best self, which was more than I expected this book to do. I will not say that it replaces therapy, but if you find that you still need to seek professional help I think that this book will provide an incredibly valuable starting point saving some time and money in your recovery process. If I do choose to seek professional help, I think that as a result of this book it would be more productive and less overwhelming. If you think this book may describe your parent, read the free preview and if it seems to line up with what you experienced growing up, this will absolutely be worth every penny.
As long as you're not looking for a book on how to fix a narcissist, this is a great and helpful read. Short answer is, you cannot fix them, nor can a professional, so take steps to protect your life from them. It gives lots of useful tips for varying degrees of closeness with said self-absorbed person, and it applies to bosses, co-workers and neighbors too.Not too touchy-feely, but more of a realist's guide to surviving.
